The bugs.

If we were talking about a finished product you'd have a point. But ED is a massive work in progress, with core systems still being tweaked and messed with and even overhauled (as many are/used to be pretty barebones to allow FD to release early) to prepare for future expansions, it makes perfect sense that there would be bugs.

Funny thing is, I'm fairly sure that if Frontier announced "that's it, we're stopping all future developments and focusing only on fixing bugs", you'd be the first to scream DAED GAEM MAINTENANCE MODE!!! at the top of your lungs.

You're description of the game sounds a lot like Beta (or even Alpha). You're 'excuse' is that FDev have sold an unfinished game as a finished game. That's worse.

But that is ultimately the case, DBOBE was just so smart to re-lable it, so nobody notices it is yet another early access game.

Fair enough..they surely can't view it as an unfinished product, although that is how it feels.

They most certainly can and do. Of course it's not very good marketting so you don't hear it often, but Sandro did explicitely say there are aspects of the game that haven't received as much love as they'd like when he announced the exploration and mining updates. Before that Michael Brookes said he would like to overhaul the whole navy progression aspect as well. And of course when you go back far enough, David himself announced how things would be done, through "the ten-year plan", which obviously means the game would stay a work in progress all this time. But even with Frontier's excessive reliance on isolated gameplay "modules" there is only so much they can do to limit how much each addition or change to one module is going to mess with the rest of the game and create bugs or design problems.

I think there's a difference in the game development world between updates/expansions and still unfinished. It's possibly a philosophical one but the stuff that's there should more or less be working. It isn't.

How is a 5 year old game in such a mess? Thargoid stuff is a state now as well. Seriously, why are the devs finding it so hard just to fulfil basic maintenance on a game that's had YEARS to become stable.
The funny thing is that the Elder Scrolls games are also buggy as all hell, but the fans don't give a biowaste. Elder Scrolls fans just accept that bugs are inevitable in a game where you can be pretty much anyone you want to be, and do almost anything you want too. Some ED players however..... 😭

That's a whole load of baloney!!
I play ESO nightly and I can login for hours on end playing with hundreds of people in the same instance and not see one problem. I can play hundreds of class combination with thousands of gears items and not see a problem. I can group and playing hundreds of dungeons with varying level difficulties and not see a problem.

For sure, there are bugs, but, in the main, the game works and people flock to it.

Elite is and always has been a bug fest. Untested releases with no quality control. Bugs existing for seemingly forever.

You simply cannot compare a AAA title like ESO to a kickstarter-backed beta game like Elite.

Meanwhile they are working on the next big [male-chicken] up.

So there were no bugs in Skyrim? OMG, someone must have put LSD in my food/drink almost every time I played that game! 😉

Gods, I remember Skyrim on PS3 was awful...it took them ages to fix that frame-rate bug that was something to do with the size of the save file (as I recall). And at one point the dragons flew backwards...
