Fed Navy ranking up - Post Commander to Rear Admiral

I'm already 100% at Post Commander and had done a few more missions - what it takes to reach the next rank ?

I didn't pay much attention previously, I seems to get messages from time to time for each rank up.

You need to get and execute a Naval Progression Mission.

Once you're at 100%, check Mission Boards of Federal Factions.
Just be aware that local Reputation, Ship type and Ship size can cause Naval Progression Missions to be locked and buried in the batch of unobtainable Missions, so it's easy to overlook them.
Also, the Mission will only be offered by a single Federal Faction, so it can be required to browse the Missions from all Federal Factions.

Advanced hint :
If a Mission is found but unobtainable or undesired (Mission type), simply close and re-open Mission Board.
This will cause the Mission Server to generate another Progression Mission from the RNG template. Repeat as often as needed until you find a Mission suiting you and that can be executed, i.e. a simple Courier Mission.

Ok !

Missions done while at 100% Rank, before completing the 'Naval Progression Mission' are still counted towards the next Rank % progression but are only added when competing 'Rank Up' mission.

Strange though how you (I) can rank all the way up to the top ranks, in both armed forces, without even firing a shot!

Added...In fact this ranking system must be one of the most under-developed content used in ED. It's ONLY advantage is to attain the 'bigger' ships, half way through the progression, that's been the case since day 1.

Yay.. successfully ranked up, doing a (first time taking such a mission) mission to kill a pirate (his ship got no shield and just flew in front of me all the time).

I reckon this (killing pirates) may get more difficult soon.

Don't forget those really great permit unlocks...still trying to work out the point of permit locking (mainly) standard systems. One or two were worth it but the others...meh?
