Turrets fire at will and friendly fire

I've read over 1,000,000 words and haven't gotten a definitive answer.

I have ALL hard points on my type 10 g5'd turrets (with xprmntls)

IMHO turrets in the t10 are much more effective than the higher damaging gimballs and fixeds. Even with fa off and sitting still.

If I turn on fire at will and have no bounty, will they hit ANYTHING?

Many NPCs have chaff and ECM and you will be lucky to hit half of them enough to do significant damage. What you will accomplish is friendly fire, which isn't nearly as friendly when it's being returned.

They only engage when you have a hostile bandit. That can be anything that shoots you except authorities. If you want to camp out in a CZ and rack up kills, you'll probably become PNG before you make any real progress.

They will hit anything you have targeted and press fire.
They will target anything showing as red on your radar screen ie. aggressive towards you.

It's perfectly possible for turrets to miss and for them to do enough damage to clean targets to trigger a bounty.

I suppose they will also attack any ship accidentally hitting you and while they turn red, they don't do enough damage to get a bounty but your turrets don't care and smoke a clean ship, leading to a murder charge on you. Did someone have that happen?

Seen this often but never happened to me. Limited experience tho. I run gimbal turrets on my Python. IIRC they operated on attacking my selected target. Or something.

This is a matter of faith. And I've lost it when I've seen how small ships evade turret fire.

Fire at will won't shoot when you press fire. They do shoot at any hostile vessels. So in some circumstances you will need make target hostile first.

I've noticed that npcs have some treshold on becoming hostile after occasional fire. They can take over more turret fire. After fixed weapons fire they become hostile faster. Probably this is because of damage amount, I'm not sure. But I do more care about not hitting friendly npcs when I use fixed weapons.

None of these response are clear cut and deffinative except in the fact, that some of you are saying turrets fire at will mode will only attack red indicated ships.

If this is the case then that's what I wanted to know.

In target only mode I hit friendlies all the time and never incur a bounty and I get a message from them saying "watch your fire CMDR"

so it's not the bounty I'm worried about, it's the turrets fire at will targeting.

If I'm in a high res, will the turrets fire at any ship within range, regardless of there color indicator, red, orange, green.

Because I know from experience you need not target anything for the turrets to attack, just press the fire button. But I've never used fire at will near friendlies

OR

Only red indicated ships.

I have, before, and it was funny, went into a hazrez in where there were never any frendlies in range, with turret beams of rainbow colors set to fire at will and sat in camera suite with the throttle a 0% for 45 minutes.

The weapon system doesn't care where you are. It will only fire at hostile (red) if set to "fire at will". In a combat zone about half the ships will automatically be hostile. In a res site, only ships that engage you (only if you have cargo) will turn red. There are often friendlies in haz res sites, I've seen a lot of sentinels and such who are basically NPC bounty hunters.

I'm Pirate Leader hunting. Which is slow an arduous, and I have my transactions at max, and was considering just putting my turret on fire at will and watching YouTube, because each transaction target is in the same system, and I've noticed if I sit in SC and throttle Zero I get interdicted by my target faster than I can interdict them .

I have my answer now. Switching to fire at will

Best way I have found to hunt pirate leaders is to drop into the nav beacon area, especially if it's compromised. You'll have a ton of pirates from various factions who will engage anything with cargo, and the pirate leaders almost always have some cargo. So you can get in a couple shots, and the piranhas will do the rest. It's funny. Sometimes two pirate leaders will drop in at the same time and engage each other. Just make you you get some damage done to them in order to get the credit.

What sort of weapon? Laser or kinetic?

Kinetic weapons spray bullets in the general direction of a target, which will have moved while they were in transit. Lasers should fire accurately when they get a clean shot.

9/10 I don't make it to the nav beacon before I'm interdicted which I always submit, and 10/10 interdictions are my target(s) and usually the rest of my targets that reside in the same system, tend to lend a hand to the interdictor who is by now running, bleeding, tail tucked, screaming for help.

In the cases I'm not interdicted, I do usually chill in the navb and kscan everyone.

1/20 even a supposedly clean target ends up having a bounty from somewhere.

I've a hilarious video saved on my xbone hard drive of a system security ship, indicated as green, after a kscan he became wanted. It was only a 5,000cr bounty, but watching all his buddies turn on him after I spit ACannon fire at him, was hilarious to watch.

If you turn on Fire at Will, and Will is not your current, locked target, no, they won’t do anything.

If Will is your current, locked target, they will shoot at him while he is alive and in range.

If he ducks behind something else, or something else crosses your field of fire, you may end up cited for a Friendly Fire incident,

Now who is this Will?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

This has been by far the absolutely most ridiculously accurate answer any one not in their right mind could possibly provide. Thanks for that.

Turreted FaW - no problem. Just make sure you’re not using turreted frags - one stray fragment and you’ll set the whole bubble against you.

Lol t10 is too slow for frags, even sitting still, I hit with a fragcan 1 time with 1 fragment (not even the entire shot) out of 5 minutes.

I love my ACans in my t10

All incendiary and 1 Corrosive on thermals

Anything under elite, is like a plasma heated knife through butter.
