Greetings!
My name is Laurence, yes I know what my username says but that is my cmdr's name in the game. There's a very short dull story about that, I won't bore you with it.
I should start with an apology, this post may be long and rambling.
I would now like to thank you all. I've been dipping in and out of this forum for some time and you have both helped me a lot, with the odd thing (game wise) and entertained me. Initially I logged on to find out about something or other and immediately got the answer, a wonderful resource of information. So I mined this place for info occasionally then I found the 'new posts' tab. Scooting through the topics whist floating around or auto docking (yes, I auto dock), I soon realised that not only is this the greatest database of info on a game that literally throws you into space then punishes you when you don't have a clue what you're doing but it's also possibly the largest collection of curmudgeonly, antagonistic and disagreeable moaners on the internet.
I knew I had found my people.
I started on Elite in the 80's and purchased the game some time last year. Now, you should know I play on a PS4, this is because I have limitations on a PC and its far easier for me on the PS. I think I've racked up a little over 5 weeks of gameplay in that time. I've read some generalisations about console players on here, I'm not a pew-pew, instant gratification dullard as I keep reading I am.
So I'm Elite in Trade and Exploration but only half way there on combat. I hate combat, I'm crap at it. I'm a Python fanboy I'm afraid. Started, as we all did, in a Sidewinder, worked up to the Vulture and ground the wotsit out of that until I could afford my Python. I've called it Hawkwind because back in the day, we used to drink beer, smoke things, play Elite and listen to Hawkwind. I gave it the tag X4E because I like the trippy concept of an X-ray for an Echo. I've dragged that thing to Sag A and back. It was a lot of jumps but, you know, it was worth it.
Since theen I got myself DEXP, I painted it green and called it Flying Teapot, hopefully some of you know why. Anyway, I jazzed that up and it takes much bigger strides. At some point I will leave the bubble for months on end and go on adventures. I cant make up my mind if I'll go in the Teapot or take the Silver Machine.
I play in solo. I ventured into open once. It lasted 10mins. Some smashmouth chased me through 2 systems and blew me up. That was enough for me. The thing is, solo is just how I want it, you see, I like a bit of Red Dwarf and always liked Silent Running, principally, stories of one soul in space with electronic buddies. I have the Leo voice in all my craft, if I could have just one wish (I want more than that), it would be that Leo finish every phrase by calling me, Dave. I just love the solitude of truly playing solo.
Like everyone else I suppose, in game, cash is no problem. I have tons of it. Trade was really my thing, I just cant get into mining but I have always loved exploration. I have engineered a few bits, done a couple of Guardian things. Not going near this Thargoid thing. It's a very human thing that, even in a game, we find alien life and try to work out ways of slaughtering it. Enough about me.
So, Elite. I love it. To be honest, I wouldn't change much. I like the slowness of the way I play it. Some may want to jump 100ly in an SRV but I'm quite content with a bit less than that. As has been said a few times on here, you could jump 20ly or 150ly, the thing is, you land in a system and explore it, what difference does it make how far apart they are? From what I can see, a lot people want far longer jumps so that they can explore, I'd wager they mainly hang around the bubble because the thought of a 1000 jump journey is too much for them. The point is, if you hang around in the bubble a lot, 1000 jumps would seem a lot, shortening those journeys would also give you the ability to jump from one side of the bubble to the other in 2 jumps and that would ruin the bubble experience.
The trouble with Elite is that we can all, to a degree, play it the way we like it. Having found that way, we focus on tweaks we'd like to make. So in one game you have people that want to make it/keep it like the amazing game Journey whilst others in the same game would like to GTA it to the max. The 2 games cant exist in the same space. I don't have any answers to this problem, other than to split it into 2 actual games. Maybe Elite Bubble and Elite Explore. I clearly haven't thought this through but we appear to have teetotallers and alcoholics trying to design the perfect night out together.
I just want add a couple of things then I'll go. I've spent a lot of time in SRV's. I love scooting around planets. For a while I was playing the scavenge game. Land on a planet, grab some mats, find a crashed ship, fight the skimmers, grab the salvage. Had hours of fun. I know I'm not the first to ask for bigger cargo bays on SRV's, it's a bit tiresome is all.
What I don't understand is how I can have a ship that has no cargo bay, I can pick up 2 canisters of salvage in my SRV but cant board the ship with the cargo because I have no cargo rack. Why cant it stay in the SRV? Also, when I tell it to transfer cargo from SRV to the ship, that process has too many clicks. The amount of time I have driven away from the ship blissfully unaware that I have failed to transfer the 2 bits of salvage. I only find this out when I complete the 1/2 a mile trek back to the salvage site only to have to turn around again.
Finally, if I can fix an SRV hull through synthesis, why cant I do the ships hull?
Anyway, that's enough from me. If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read this. Another final thank you to all members on here for their knowledge and their endless moaning and complaining. I honestly mean it when I say I find it fantastically familiar and funny.
Over and out.
