Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Expedition

I was living in Daytona Bch. Florida from 1963 to 1972 and saw one Murcury launch and all of the Gemini and Apollo launches in person, from Coco Beach. I was 13 years old when Apollo 11 went up. We got up at 4:30am in the morning to drive down to Coco Beach to make the launch of Apollo 11 at 6:30am.

So, I was one of a few thousand on hand to watch a bit of history being made. A few days later, we watched the landing on a color TV, and my disappointment when it was broadcasted in B&W from the moon.

Later in 1972, I would find myself in Vietnam walking through rice paddies.

I'll wait for FDev to make the moon landable so I can land near the Apollo 11 landing site and see the place as Niel and Buzz saw it.

o7....

And the kicker is, Michael Collins was only 60 miles away from them, and he couldn't watch it on TV at all :D

That's awesome, o7 :)

I finished up earlier today, I had a lot of mishaps for such a short expedition to the point it was more of an Apollo 13 tribute. Missed the launch date due to confusion, when I finally did go to launch my power got knocked out for several hours by a storm. My progress wasn't updating and I backtracked 20 jumps to the Witch Head Nebula just to get the starting waypoint to show I'd completed it. I almost killed myself landing on HIP 102082 1 because I didn't realize it was a high G planet. And a few other things.

I enjoyed it though, there were some really cool sites. I had been to a couple of the spots but the rest were all new to me and very cool to check out.

I wish there was a Haha option on the Like button, but I know people didn't want the forums to become too Facebookified. Probably a good call. In the meantime have a vanilla Like for making me snort.

Not totally on topic but I just saw that they're releasing From The Earth To The Moon on Blu Ray tomorrow to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the launch. My old DVDs have just about had it. I was in high school when that came out and it blew my mind, I'd already seen Apollo 13 and while I enjoyed the movie a lot it didn't capture my imagination as much as the series which actually showed a bunch of lunar landings. My only beef with it is that they basically dropped John Young as a character. He was NASA's longest serving astronaut, from the first Gemini mission to the early shuttle missions: 2 Gemini Missions, 2 Apollo Missions and 2 Shuttle Missions (including an insane test flight). For all that he gets like 90 seconds of screentime (and almost none in Apollo 13 even though he was on the backup crew and in the simulators as much as Mattingly) because Tom Hanks turned the Apollo 16 episode into the Astronaut Wives episode apparently so his wife could get more screentime. Personally I would have rather seen some hilarious recreations of Young/Duke on the moon as they were almost as hilarious as Conrad/Bean.

I've been hitting all the waypoints. Nothing showing in the expedition pages for me as making them tho. But my edsm flight log shows the stops. any ideas? is it a batch thing? updates slow?

They can take a while to catch up because the servers get slammed with data during popular expeditions. I'm still at Waypoint 8 and some of mine took a couple of hours to catch up. One I had to leave overnight so I'm not sure exactly how long it took, but it was there in the morning.

If none of yours are showing up that's a bit unusual, unless you sprinted the entire thing in one session and the website just hasn't got around to processing your chunk of data yet.

Impressed with the screenshots though. I had no idea the final destination was so pretty. I was planning to make the last two hops early Saturday morning but I've got this afternoon off and the weather's awful so it might be lunch followed by launch later on.

All of the waypoints are now showing up with the green check mark except the very first one. Weird. I'll run back there and log off/on to see if it sticks. thanks for the help!

Yeah, I've noticed that some of them would show up immediately, and on other days it might take overnight for the progress to get counted. I think their progress checker is running at a low priority, and gets delayed if the server is busy.

I had the same thing happen to me, I was at the 4th Waypoint and they all showed up except the first. I went back and it still didn't immediately pop up so I continued with the expedition thinking that maybe the starting system didn't get checked off or something. Then at some point a day or so later it showed up on the page and surprised me.

Well I'm on the final waypoint's moon (and what a view it gives!) but I've no idea where this evening's European meet is taking place. I was awake early enough to almost catch the Oceania meet at Geo 15, but either I didn't instance well or everyone had already left. One other CMDR arrived after me, but logged off just as I was about to send a message.

Is there anywhere on the Discord that I should be looking for up-to-date info, other than the Announcements channel? Chances of me getting some time to play this evening are slim but not zero, so I'd like to at least get some screenshots of a few explorers on the surface if possible. Is the Euro meet going to be at a Geo site or arbitrary coordinates? Or hasn't it been decided yet?

TIA.

Hello. We've been planning this for a good while now. There's nothing arbitrary about our coordinates hehe

The details are in the Discords Announcements, Crew Lounge, and Mission Control channels.

Someone beat you to it years ago...

In this LEM simulation, you have rocket launchers instead of machine guns.

o7....

That sounds awesome, I love Atari Lunar Lander and rocket launchers make everything better.
