What happens when abandoned PMFs are removed?

Here's a parallel question about player minor factions.

If a pmf is exclusively xbox, does a parallel faction in the pc universe get created ...

Yes. The BGS is shared across platforms

even though no pc players "own it".

No players ever "own" a faction, other than the right to name it.

If a pmf is dead (no players are actively supporting it), and no squad exists for it, can you pirate the faction - create a squad with the name of the faction and essentially operate the pmf without official handover?

You can do that with any faction, PMF or NPC, supported or not, at any time. A squadron can only align with one faction, but multiple squadrons can choose the same faction.

FDev won't even change a PMF's government type for fear it will break BGS :p

Imagine if they removed a faction which has presence in multiple systems, BGS will get confuse calculating Influence percentages o_O

Thing is.. factions don't actually get removed anyway. .. they just get moved to non existent systems. Coz I'm allied with League of Reparation, i can create a squadron pledged to them. Their home system is "TEST2".

So I can squadron "pirate" a currently existing faction. I can name my squadron the same as the faction, claim alliance with that faction, without the knowledge or involvement of the actial faction creators. I don't think that's necessarily bad.

Afaik you can't name a squadron the same as a faction.

Note... you pledge allegience, not closing alliances . It's an important distinction... because pledging allegience is a one- way thing... it can be two way but in elite it isn't.

Your choice of the word "pirate" is interesting.... since you aren't taking anything from anyone? Having that squadron doesn't confer any "rights" over a faction or anything like that.

The original creators of the pmf I'm interested in have not created a squadron of the same name. If I create the squadron in the pmf's name, I feel like I am pirating the pmf or at least leveraging its existence to establish value and recognition for the squad.

Both mine are named the same ;)

I can possibly explain this one.

There seems to have been a round of PMF insertions a while back where FD updated system descriptions before checking if the PMF placement was valid.

On one occasion... we expanded to and took over a system just before an update... after the update the system description had changed but no PMF was present. I later found a (belated) post from FD which included a list of PMF request statuses. On that list was the faction bearing the descriptions name and the status of rejected due to a PMF (my PMF) already being in that system.

There is a PMF in Arque, so maybe that's what happened.
According to the GM, Hernkopa Interstellar Logistics is the installed PMF in the Hernkopa system. Hernkopa Interstellar Logistics appeared on a similar list flagged as rejected on the grounds that a PMF was already in the system. From what we can see, this pre-existing PMF can only have been Hernkopa Interstellar Logistics itself - there is no other.
