Mining SLF?

All right, some random thought:

How game breaking would it be to have mining SLF and pilot?

You can hire combat pilot, "put" him or her into SLF and pretend you have a wing(wo)man who will defend you or attack your target. Or be expendable decoy. Choices are many. But not everyone want to paricipate in combat while still wishing to use SLF. I know I would. So I thought about mining SLF. Instead of lasers I would mount mining equipment for blasting things, or collector to gather things. I could then sit and manage my worker.

See that rock? Go mine surface while I gather flying chunks. Or collect all I blasted off. Ideally if we could use more than one mining SLF at a time. Something alike Homeworld mobile refinery ship:

And this got me thinking - idea awesome and all... but how much game breaking? We know FDEVs tend to overcomplicate things instead of streamlining. And sitting in your ship while watching SLF doing all the work is exactly opposite to "Dangerous".

Anyway, just random thought, wishful thinking about feature that could add to <in Yamiks' voice> "personal narrative".

Pretty sure this is called a “Limpet”.

Think about the size of an SLF. How much cargo space does it have? How many fragments could it collect before it would have to return to unload?

What you really want is Mining Lasers, Abrasion Blasters, Subsurface missiles and/or Seismic Charges FOR SLFs.

It’s within the realm of possible, but the practicality is another story entirely.

Yes, limpets just do the scanning and hauling. They aren't at all the same as what we're talking about when we're talking about Ship Launched Miners (mining SLFs). We're talking about mining ships which have small specialized mining tools to do the mining. There would probably be a version of the miner for surface mining and another version for core mining for instance.

+1

An SLF with one mining laser and one abrasion blaster would be super-useful, giving you an outfitting option that lets large ships avoid having to lumber through and around asteroid remnants, speeding the work up, giving multicrew miners more to do, but at the loss of some cargo space.

I'd also like to see a fighter with a delay-release flak cannon, while we're at it.

Right, Mining Lasers, Abrasion Blasters, Subsurface Missiles and Seismic Charges for SLF's.

And an AI at least moderately capable of using them, while collector and prospector limpets do the hauling and surveying.

Again, not outside the realm of possible, just the efficiency of it is called into question. No doubt for a multi-crew mining operation this would be far more feasible and potentially enjoyable, but at the same time, it's neither that difficult nor time consuming to actually do the mining yourself, and not split the profits with either NPC crew or other people.

My own mining ship features all the mining tools, collectors, prospectors, prismatic shielding, and still manages 704 tons of cargo capacity... when I set out to mine it's an all-day affair, because I want it to be. When mining is what I'm in the mood to do, I do it until I'm done. There's no race, no rush, no deadline to meet.. just me, the rocks, and 1,188,118,976 credits worth of void opals.

I fear no NPC's, do not submit to interdictions, and can land just fine.

Personally, I don't even want NPCs to do mining, so how hard it would be for frontier to implement that would be irrelevant to me. I just want to be able to use mining SLFs for mining while my NPC follows/protects.

A mining SLF equipped with the pulse wave would be able to detect the correct (Core)rocks to mine much better than we could(Telling it what to look for)- just a thought.

Small seismic charges AKA class 1 would be nice let alone a SLF capable of mining
