Let me buy the Cobra MK IV please.

Suddenly I remembered the thing in the FE2 book about the other versions of the Cobra. They had the Mk1 and Mk3 in the game, and made references to the Mk2 as having been cancelled after proving to be an utter disaster with horrible design flaws that lead to it being removed from the market.

So the pattern so far is "decent, terrible, amazing, mediocre", so maybe when they get around to a Mk5 it'll be really really good. You know, the odd-numbered ones are great and the even numbered ones are awful, like some weird inverse of the star trek movies.
When it comes to Trek movies, they were all pretty mediocre, and mostly derivative of previous stories.

Okay, if we want to go with the "alternating between passable and terrible with subsequent versions" then we could just compare them to Windows. The cobra mk2 was the Millennium Edition of the series while the mk4 is vista :p

Very few people would take issue in comparison to how many players would be pleased with access to a ship they weren’t able to acquire before.
This is a particularly facile argument.Obviously the number of players without access to an exclusive and time limited deal is going to increase and outweigh those who were fortunate(?) enough to have been in the right place at the right time with every day that passes. They already gave you the sun, moon and stars and enough ships to go anywhere and do anything. The Robin Reliant ceased production some years ago.
Furthermore, were FD to do as you suggest, they would breach the trust that they have established their most valued customers, the backers, without whom there would be no game.

Because you, a single person, represent everyone? Even if it's only one person who loses trust in them, then it's a net loss.
It's just a ship. No one needs to be banned for expressing an opinion. You speak about trust for FDev.. why? It's a company that owe you nothing and its sole purpose is to make money. I'm offering them another revenue stream via paint jobs for a ship. It's very clearly established in this thread that not a single person is flying this ship so why is it important?

Shouldn't then the pattern be "decent, terrible, amazing, decent"? That would result in the Cobra MK V being terrible and the Cobra VI being the real Cobra Mk III successor (amazing - maybe they see the light and move the pilots chair to the middle).
(Knowing FDev the Cobra MK VI will probably be a medium sized ship…)

mk1 was decent, 2 was terrible, 3 is amazing, 4 is very strictly meh

I actually flew the mk1 voluntarily when I played FE2 (even if it was only because I couldn't yet afford a mk3)

It's a ship. I dont understand why people seem to be getting so angry over this. Judging from this thread alone, no one flys this thing. What a waste.

Would you be annoyed by the c4 becoming buyable? Who does this effect and how does it affect them? Even with your (very fair) argument, it's been 5 years, and it's a video game?

I dont understand why it matters anymore?
I got access to mine, because I brought the LEP, before the Horizons launch. Now at the time, the dome sayers, were predicting that that the game would be dead within a year and I invested £120, so not to have to spend anymore, over the seasons, yet to come. At the time, I believed that it would free in the game (0 credits), like the Free Eagle and not an 'exclusive item' and there has been some dispute, over the original wording, of the offer. Then horizons was launched and no free Cobra, which I was very vocal about; I mean 450k credits, is still 450k credits. It was at this time, I realised it was an exclusive item and I was not happy about that, or being a part, of that exclusive club.

Then the crying really started. Threads were being made by February 2016, less than two months after the Horizons launch and it was the attitude and general venom displayed, by those who missed out, that has set the views I have today.

As you stated. It is a ship and none of us really understand, why some people, can get so angry about not having it.

To be honest tempers really do seem to flair up in the ED community of dumb reasons which is why I had waited so long to post on the forum.
Getting angry about not having the ship or wishing to keep the ship as an exclusive is silly. I'm just sat here, wondering what the c4 is like and if fdev will ever let me use it.

Multi crew with someone who has one.

I wonder if those financial analysts could come onto this thread and explain how potential litigation from a 'couple' of Horizon Pre-order commanders and the cost of unpicking the code constraint would out-weigh the store revenue of ship kits and paint jobs for the Cobra MkIV.

If you look at the actual wording that was used to promise the 'Exclusive Cobra MkIV forever' as a pre-order bonus it has more holes in it that swiss cheese.

Exclusive - i.e. in Elite not in any other Frontier (or other) game.
Forever - i.e. if you pre-order Horizons - you can buy the ship in shipyards for as long as the game is running.

No mention of platform, No mention of preventing other commanders from also getting it.
It is all down to the interpretation of the language used and as such subjective.
We are well beyond the release of Horizons on PC or Xbox and I believe that the constraint should now be removed. (i.e. a timed exclusive rather than a permanent exclusive.)
The idea was badly thought out, proposed and implemented.

It is connected to progression mechanics, and gameplay mechanics.

It is not some two-bit aesthetic/vanity thing. Microtransactions only exist in paid videogames because they're so juicy. Pretty much all microtransaction-type things are just things that should be considered part of that game to begin with but they're not because people tolerate it. However, these things are always blatantly insignificant to some level because they have to be, or people get a problem with it. Ships in this game cross this line pretty far.

This is then made worse by the type of game Elite: Dangerous is. This is not some 5 minute play game or multiplayer game where you just play it to play it. The game wants to be so immersive, it wants you to personally invest in it, which is 100% at odds with this kind of slicing and dicing of the "product".

And then there is that ships are the filter through which everything in this game goes. Without ships, this game is nothing. It's just a giant timesink where you basically increment or de-increment numbers over, and over.

Will it ever stop? I once was open to free this ship. I love flying it, it is travelling in style. It can do a lot if you know how. It can‘t do anything you can‘t do with other ships equally or better.

But I can‘t stand these threads no more. If FD releases the ship to everyone there probably would be new threads with long complaints from new owners who don‘t like it.

So, OP:

No. You can‘t have it. It‘s the present from FD for the backers who made the development of this game possible. Say o7 respectfully if you meet one and get over it.

...just like you don't get to win last week's lottery, as you didn't pick those numbers last week 🤷‍♀️

Actually it is more like this:
You want to book a holiday in a nice resort on a nice island.
The seller is giving you the virtual tour: we have those nice rooms and suites, spa, shopping center, cinema, park, pool.
You are happy with it and book your holiday.
You get there, check in and go to the spa. At entrance you are told that you cannot use the spa because it is reserved for the customers that booked their holidays in January
  • But.. but... the seller didn't mention that and the spa is presented in your flyer, no conditions are mentioned.
  • Sorry - most probably an oversight
  • Ok so is there any other spa on this island?
  • No, but we have pool, park, cinema, shopping center

😅

I think that generally a Marmite kind of ship. You love it or hate it. For the poorer player, (myself, I have been playing since general launch and still only have 300mil in assists) it is a nice little ship. A lesser Python or Krait, sort of thing. For its size, it is slow, really slow, if you are used to the Cobra III. For most players, who can grind out 100s of millions of credits, in a short time; it has no real use, but if you re just plodding along, casually enjoying the game, then it can have a niche. I used my first one for passenger running. 3 cabins, 20 berths and between 2 and 5 million, per trip, for runs of under 75Lys, it is great. Top boost speed of 306ms, means smuggling wanted passengers; can be interesting and that is my idea of fun. This paid for and fitted my FDL, in a very short amount of playing time. I brought another one and fitted it out for single assassination missions, just to prove to myself, it can be done.

little surprise

I still spend, most of my time in my Cobra III, simply because I only play the game to have fun and that is the ship, I have most fun in.

As I have said, you love it or hate it. If I could to afford to run a Python, I would and all my Cobras, would be gathering dust.

Is that an answer, or a business plan?

As I have said: The relentlessness of it, just wears you down.
