Uh oh, It's wonky..

Bad news guys.. like a record left in the sun, It appears our Galaxy has gotten its wonk on.

Highlights :

“The stars 60,000 light years away from the Milky Way’s centre are as far as 4,500 [light years] above or below the galactic plane – this is a big percentage,” said Dr Dorota Skowron of the University of Warsaw, first author of the latest research.

The new research shows our galaxy, which Skowron notes has a radius of about 70,000 light years and four spiral arms, is “warped”, with the outer regions of one side bent “up” from the galactic plane towards the north galactic pole, and the other bent “down”. The thickness of the disc is not the same all the way across – it flares towards the edges, like a pair of 1970s jeans.

Looks like Elite's model may need a bit of a tweak.. or maybe a twist? :)

I get the impression that David Braben might be OCD. I wonder if this news keeps him awake at night.

In space, you're Issac Newtons bi**h. The galaxy and by extension the universe is not a static thing.

Fdev doesn't have the time to go in and remap 400+bn stars. For that matter, it's not even entirely 100% accurate star for star because we haven't even found them or looked at them all in 2019 let alone 1300 years in the future. Half the Milky Way in game is procedurally generated and unless you're an astronomer with access to space and ground based telescope, you'll never really know if GBA-111-A1 really has an ELW or if GBA-111-A1 really exists.

I really doubt anyone is going to be rushing to the edge of the galaxy just to see if it's accurately updated

You may be joking, but the idiots will be along after you....

i dont internet very much, this place sucks.

not the ED forums, but the internet at large. Too many people posting about useless things like the accuracy of Cepheids on the galactic plane

Yeah, I mean, It's not like people who play a game like Elite would ever be interested in articles on astronomy, right?

lol

Oh. My. God. The immersion. It is completely shattered. Literally unplayable.

I'm pretty sure there are people who have rage quit for reasons just as ridiculous as this. :)

Whether you think the ED galaxy needs a "tweak" or not, is irrelevant. The simple fact is, the ED galaxy is there now and it cannot be changed. The way the Stellar Forge is programmed to operate, "moving" a single star would create immense difficulties and probably result in the entire galaxy getting deleted and replaced. Moving all of the the stars in two entire galactic arms simply isn't going to happen.

Seriously you have 2 choices. Explore the incorrect version of Elite or say Dammit and explore the real Milky Way and tell FD how wrong they are about everything.

Let me know how that works out for you.

The OP was making a joke, friends. :)

He’s also sharing an astronomy article because Elite has a lot of astronomy fans who play. I thought it was interesting.

No one is criticizing FDev or asking to change anything.

and I was being serious by telling him to explore the actual Milky Way? I wasn't being serious when I said seriously.

My apologies, then. Sarcasm is difficult to interpret in text sometimes. My bad. :censored:

There are others in this thread who clearly think the OP has made some great sin. I am sorry that I wrongfully lumped you with them.
