Proposal Discussion Cheating the system with commander names.

I use many apostrophes in mine CMDR 'Moritasgus' O'Neill with the first two designed to imply a nickname as someone else beat me to O'Neill however i guess had i got O'Neill i'd have been a little annoyed with all the variations you mentioned.

Has this come up due to your name? I was going to ask if you had reserved them but last time i searched 4 Mobius came up 3 of them with what you mentioned.
I also know a character specifically mentioned in that kickstarter link as not allowed because they don't own the rights but it has a stop after so has been accepted.

I think apostrophes should be allowed as well, within normal established usage.

Certainly the side steps to get the Jamieson surname should be prevented, even if the same level of stringency on naming rules isn't applied to other names.

I.e.

CMDR 'Moritasgus' O'Neill okay
CMDR Joe 'Jamieson' Not okay.

Just to preserve the integrity of the KS reward tier.

why should it be different the other kickstartee reward tier wa to reserve your commander name first come first served. except that not really the case if you can just add a full stop to the name .

It's an age old problem with the internet, i'm not really sure how to fix it other than taking it upon yourself to pick something nobody else will want to have!
The KS isn't really degraded as such as you are still the original and best Mobius and the other Mobius. 'Mobius' Mobiuz are just clones.
Short of a human visually checking every name against a database (fun especially on release day) you are reliant on software filters but humans tend to find a way to fox them all too easy.

What if someone comes up with the same naming idea as you (not especially unique - I personally know three people with that surname), but spells it properly?

(i.e. Möbius, or Moebius in case the game doesn't allow umlauts, which I think is the case due to the misspelling of the I Boötis system in the game.)

There are some similary misspelled variants in pop culture, but judging from your signature, I assume it's a reference to the Möbius Band.

Should they be disallowed from using the name, just because you registered a misspelled variant earlier?

Especially in your case, I don't see the issue - you have a dedicated PVE group. If you think it's an issue, just deny Mr. or Mrs. Moebius entry...

Thank goodness my name is not only Unique... but apparently not even wanted by other people as i never have a problem getting it in any game i play.

Should only allow alphanumeric with spaces but no punctuation and no other characters and only single spaces if spaces are used.

Good thread, a thread that actually means something.

True didn't think of that, more just the heafty price tag for the Jamieson name

Well there have been solutions in other games that work rather well. For example, both Guild Wars 2 and the entire Battle.Net ecosystem add a randomly generated 4 digit number behind your name, e.g. while you would register as Jameson, the game actually assigns you the name Jameson.3141. As long as no one else has registered the name Jameson, anyone can just reach you under that name without the number (but still sees it displayed in friend lists, forums etc.). If there are multiple Jamesons then, people will need to include your number in order to reach you, unless they have you on their friend list and none of the other Jamesons, in which case the system automatically assumes you mean to talk to the one on your friend list if you leave out the number.

:)

oh and case in point being the lastest GALNET newsfeed ..."follow the lead of leading bounty hunter Cmdr kiFF and collect the generous rewards offered on rogue agents".

kiFF being a perfectly good name for a CMDR plus having a clear meaning. in english his name would be CMDR ganJA

what is not to like?!

i see censorship & the thought police are strong in the year 3300

and as you know there are tools in game to make sure you never need to suffer from the plight of möbius1 to möbius9189731^2 et al again

so how about beta2 then?!

what side are you taking in the war!?

To the OP's point, well unfortunately if those names fall under the legal naming convention as set out by Frontier, then quite frankly that's just the way it is.
If they're close to 'special' names, then by all means make legit names stand out to show they're special.

To all those people who are complaining in this thread (even though it's off topic) about names with punctuation or numbers, and how it's breaking immersion for you, well I feel sad for you, really I do.
FD have made players have unique names, so obviously not everyone can have the same one.
Does this mean they will choose random seldom used names (out of a hat) or a variant of their original choice, hmnn probably the latter.
And why should they choose a random name.
If I ban your first 2 choices and make you pick another you'll cry foul and no mistake.
This discussion of leet names, if it was going to be discussed at all should of been done in the DDF, and long before alpha, and certainly before the KS Web applet allowed you to pick a name.
I was a KS backer and my first choice was disallowed as an earlier backer had taken it.
He may of backed an hour earlier or maybe only a fiver, makes no difference he was first.
It later turns out he may not even want that name, insult to injury.
If FD changes naming policy, well I'm fine with that, and will change it without question, so long as all current names are banned and everyone has to choose a new one, or its variant.
My name was legit when I chose it, moving the goalposts now would be grossly unfair.
While you're talking about immersion and leet names, I hope you people boycott
Films with characters names with numbers ie IG-88
Twitter handles with same ie KarenGillan2
And have a right go at people who spell their name (badly) on car number plates.

If you can't tell if Dave, D4VE or Dave- killed you before, well that's easy, if you died you should never meet him again (or vice versa) as your dead and can't be killed twice by the same person, it would break yours, and their immersion!

Having those name with numbers and punctuation in them can be somewhat immersion breaking. A good example where this happens is Star Trek Online. Names like Enterprise and Kirk are locked out, but do you know how many Enterpr1ze and K1rks there are? Especially since your character's name is tied with a unique @handle. So there could be 100 K1rks and 1000 Enterpr1zes running around. It does get quite annoying.

I understand hero worship and all, but I don't want to see 100 variations of Mal Reynolds flying around.
