Oculus Rift second window (useful for twitchers & youtubers)

One thing to bear in mind is that this is just taking the left eye image, so you'll want to set the resolution appropriately. E.g. if the OR is set to 1920x1080, then the left eye image will be 960x1080 (i.e. half the width). If you make it bigger or smaller than that, just be sure to keep that same aspect ratio for the best effect. If you have the window size set to 1920x1080 (thinking you'll get full HD) then it'll all be stretched horizontally, which is what I think you're seeing in this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOdMgNQuoKc.

Hm, wrong video. But anyway the correct video looks all wrong.

Think I'll stick with OBS cropping (unless it does work property in Beta 2 with proper 0.4.x SDK integration, which might be the current issue)

Here's the correct video (though it seems you found it anyway):

It seems that there is currently a lot of Field of View distortion. But this didn't seem to be present in the EGX build - so hopefully it will be fixed in Beta 2 later today.

You could try changing the FOV in the graphics options, but I think the most distortion you're seeing is from having the second window width twice its correct size.

Can't wait to try this tonight. In beta 2 do you still use the rift in extended mode or direct mode ?

can you stream the window to twitch with shadowplay ?

Just tried the resolution fix. I was running the game at 1920x1080 so set the 2nd screen at 960x1080.

There is also a lot of vertical distortion going on (as well as horizontal distortion).

I have a feeling things will be fine once Beta 2 arrives - it worked perfectly on the EGX build. Of course it could just be something up with my setup... :) Either way it's a nice extra if it works - but if not, then no worries. :)

Let's see what happens later today.

Struggling to find the config file.

I've looked in %appdata%\frontier_developments and also in <game install directory>\frontier

did the name of the file change for beta 2 ?

Only just got around to trying this, it works great. Best addition yet!
Does not seem to have a big effect on performance, very clear picture and very little distortion. Text easy to read and image good enough to play on. Have not tried docking but was able to dogfight and win just using the 2d view.

Will be great to be able to show people Elite in VR without having to teach them how to fly first. Also for taking the rift off and still being able to see what's going on in game from time to time.

What software are you guys using to record? I can't seem to get fraps or afterburner to pick anything up.

heys, as a complete noob at adding things to other things and making things work, can someone who has added the code into the file mind print screening so I know where to add it, all them brackets are hurting my eyes.

thanks!

Thanks for sharing Eddie!

I predominantly tried this because I often have people come over and use ED to show them the rift, and having the opportunity to see what they see just makes it so far easier to do just that. Works like a charm, although I randomly get a black skybox which never happens when I disable it.

Now having seen some of the videos in this thread, I thought it may be a neat idea to have recording software running in the background, map recording to a switch on my Hotas and just record interesting scenes to analyse my mistakes (I'm terribly bad at the game). Just having started trying to find a workable solution, the results are a bit disappointing and actually unplayable (imagine that judder from the rifts perspective).

Anyway - I only started using OBS today (Thanks for the suggestion Titus, Fraps and Shadowplay didn't capture anything here as well), but it's really taxing on the framerate compared to Fraps (normally run almost 75 FPS constantly in the scene above, was at approximately 40-50 whilst recording) and moreover, had irreversible losses of tracking whilst recording which I hardly ever had when not recording in recent weeks.

Anyone experiencing similar problems?

I'll find the necessary tutorials about setting up OBS and finding the proper codecs myself, but suggestions if the issues described are normal or not or where to start looking for these specific problems would be very welcome :).

Hmm actually suddenly with this OBS will grab the screen, but still records the two-eye version rather than the output of the Window.

Not sure what's up with that?

Did you set the screen number to primary (depending on your config) and select window capture as source?

Despite having terrible performance drops when recording with OBS - worse than I ever experienced with Fraps - and randomly getting a starless skybox, that's one of the few things I don't have issues with.

It's not FD's fault - upgrading my hardware is long overdue, but I want to wait until CV1 is released and then do a fresh build around it.

This is a really useful addition to the XML actually and helps in so many ways, but even my GTX 880M struggled as my ingame FPS took a nose dive.

Amazing but doesn't work with SLI

I have an i7 4770K 16gigs of ram and two GTX 780s in SLI and I have to disable SLI to get this to work properly. Also, it adds a little bit of judder when enabled (an annoying but bearable amount of judder).

SLI force alternate frame rendering 2 (FAFR 2) with mirroring disabled: buttery smooth head tracking with zero judder even in docks. I have experienced judder near asteroid fields though.
SLI FAFR 1 with mirroring enabled: it works but judder is unbearable
SLI FAFR 2 with mirroring enabled: judder is bad (not as bad as with FAFR1) and major artifacts (missing sky box

SLI disabled and mirroring on: experience judder in station have to look away from station when outside of station to get the buttery smooth head tracking experience. An awesome trick but I wish SLI was better supported. Nvidia needs to hurry up and release VR SLI already (and support older cards with it).
