I exploded at Erikson's Star with data on 1274 undiscovered systems... Whoops.

So, I've been hitting all the Galactic limits. I went to the east, then headed to Explorer's, then went to Semotus Beacon and then directly on to Erikson's Star. I've been jumping through unvisited systems, 1274 of them to be exact. I FSS'd every planet in every system I jumped through and DSS'd every ELW, WW, and AW.

Then I crashed into a planet at Erikson's, and exploded. Now I'm back at Explorer's Anchorage.

So that's a lot of data lost then. What am i going to do now ? Jump back through all the systems and do it again. Something to do I suppose :p

You're deliberately going to scan 1274 system and then crash into a planet?
That sounds strange to me, but if it's fun to you - who am I to judge?
Hah, I might decided that smashing into a planet is probably a bad idea this time around :p

Can't hurt to file a ticket to FDev Support and ask if they can help. No guarantees, though.
Yeah, I'd rather not go that route, it's kinda the "I can't accept the consequences of my own actions" route. I'd rather just run the route again (though dealing with ED's routing when you're trying to force a route is proving problematic, everything has to be manually plotted for some reason !)

Well you don't have to visit exactly the same systems the second time though. If you know where the ELWs are, you could plot from one to the next, and you might even discover a few more along the way if some of the systems in between are different.

There was a moment when I found myself a mere 6kly from home with only 70MCr of star surveys in the bag and I found myself making an instrument landing on the dark side of a planet so I could take a nice photograph of a nebula, when I wondered if what I was doing was entirely sensible.

Your data may be lost, but the game still remembers which stars you visited along the way. So replotting your route ought to be simple: just click on the "visited stars" filter, and de-select "not-visited". Now, your route plotter has no choice but to re-visit all the blue dots.

Try setting the GalMap filter to Visited Systems only and plotting - assuming you were traveling in a straight line that should work.

Edit
Or I could read the whole thread before replying ;)

Yeah, so I deleted my visitedstarscache, created an ImportStars.txt file containing only the systems I jumped through, so it only shows my route. The game refuses to plot through it. Sometimes I can get it to plot maybe 4 juimps, sometimes it fails to plot a route to the next system along. So I'm just manually plotting, cos it saves the hassle of messing around with the galmap.

It's really weird :| Cos you'd think it'd work, but the game seems to not like being FORCED to use a route, it wants to work it out itself.

It's not the jumping that is the issue, it's all the FSS/DSS stuff I have to do. They really have to make a "black box" thing in game, where your data gets recorded into an item, which you can go and pick back up again.

Or, how about, in a galaxy where we have instant communication across the galaxy, maybe report the data back to your home system on a schedule ?

I'd recommend to head back and take care of any bookmarked Systems (i.e. untagged ELWs or very valuable Systems) if you set any.
Such a trip goes much faster and still gets you the very best parts of the Data, depending on your personal preferences.

PS.
On longer trips like that, "human error" becomes an increasingly important risk factor that needs to be kept in mind.
Any Planetary Landings then must not end up in any experiments but rather be carried out with great care and "checklist discipline".

I think "Don't Show Off On Stream" will become a rule for me going forward :p

That is quite the loss. Sorry to see it. Hasn't happened to me for some time which is surprising considering how I fly.
I find cursing the star gods, threatening to uninstall Elite and pointing uselessly at the screen helps quite a lot, then back to it after a day or so.
Good luck on the rerun.

Oh yeah, I went through those phases (as well as berating myself for several hours afterwards). I then just started again and did 60 jumps before I went to sleep, now I'm back on the route again. Coming up on 10% completion :)

Ouch! I feel your pain. It happened to me 3-4 months ago. I used my edsm logs to replicate my route. Good luck, cmdr.

O7 CMDR, You have my condolences as well. Happened to me as well in the joy of finding amphora plants. Approach to the site on the 3.1g planet was too steep and I smacked my AspX with data of many ELWs in the sector into the ground. Yeah, had to start over at Attenborough's Watch again and INARA helped me lot in route reconstruction. But this can't stop a true explorer. Trust me! ;)
