Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

NMS is a bit buggy right now on PS4, so once it's patched up, I plan on finding that perfect ELW, building a base, and thoroughly exploring the planet. This means I'll be using NMS more as a flight simulator rather than a space simulator.

The new NMS does some things incredibly well. Their version of "The Codex" is much, much, MUCH superior to ED's version IMO. I look forward to completely cataloging my new home planet.

BTW, I'm playing in creative mode these days. I did the whole survival grind a couple of years ago, and I enjoyed it for what it is, but these days I just want to explore and build and fly without any of the hassle of managing a quintilian different materials and blueprints and components. I can only do one grindy game at a time, and that's ED for me (and I'm actually not complaining about it).

Yeah i keep trying again at every major patch. There's something about this time around where they've made it so it all makes sense.. the survival crafting side seems to check out more logically rather than being an arbitary element for a function, the fact you loot relics for the faction you're in from green boxes rather than guaranteed to be not your faction, the complete tidying up of npc dialog options (though the majority are the same now.. maybe not), streamlining the location discovery thing to data and maps rather than random npc dialog.. its like the game went from a drunk hipster geeking out in every way possible because they could to something very coherent. I like it alot.

Im inspired to make it to the point of getting a capital ship to be expertly aware of features other games have that we're missing out on with fleet carriers so see how it goes. They managed to get me off the ground well enough but i seem to be bogged down in base building in the tutorial.

Yeah nms has its hipster system map now too. It makes me want to puke, but i can't deny its got one finally...

Also the flight model appears to be like holding runny jelly when you first come to it.. but as soon as you stop trying to fly your ship and instead hold runny jelly.. its quite slick.

Just wondering, if there would be an official NMS forum... Do you think people over there would point out how Elite is clearly the better game as well?

Apparently they don't have a forum, its just reddit. So technically no, they would get downvoted and moderated for low quality posts like the elite dangerous subreddit does.

Did you also tell them that they are crap at developing games?

They're not though. The owner is a liar who knows a similar well known developer whos been accused of being a pathological liar. And that tool was used for actual financial gain during preorders for nms. That's completely different to their development support of the game its a strong positive actually, which you shouldn't compare to elites unless you want to be deflated.

To answer your question OP, I believe the main reason is technical debt inherited from going from cool idea and a game engine to viable minimum product in just 20 months. To FDev's credit what they accomplished with their team with the funding they had is nothing short of phenomenal, but it came at the cost of hamstringing future content development.

If you watch the Discovery Scanner episode on the mission system, they insinuate that the tools for adding things as basic as more missions to the game are an immense pain in the ass to use, thus it can be assumed that any tools they have are quite primitive...when they have tools at all (my experiences in software development are when a project is frontloaded like ED likely was, the tools for further development either don't exist or are a pain in the ass to use). As such, I feel that the Horizons season was stuck in a state of perpetual catchup, and would explain why the likes of the Engineers and Multi-crew left a lot to be desired.

Beyond was the necessary breather year that IMO accomplished a lot of good, even if I feel it's what should've been 2017's season. They said last August that they're in full production of the next era of Elite, which I suspect is a full backend rebuild of the game to both get rid of the cruft, and to make it easier to add new content to the game. I have a sneaking suspicion that next-era content is still in the prototyping stage, as they haven't finished the rebuild yet; and is why I'm quite dismissive of the February leak because even if they were working on Thargoids: Colonial Marines and base building when the leak dropped, there's no guarantee that they would still be working on that in February of next year (they were also pretty damn confident at Frontier Expo of getting reworked ice planets and fleet carriers into Beyond chapter four, remember).

Interesting thing, Reddit is the "official" forum and ED is rarely every mentioned. I saw one mentioning the other day from someone who said they're playing NMS instead of ED. Other than that, not much comparison.

You forgot, they lied to make a truckload of money and run, so in reality, HG is run by clone-sean. The real Sean is sitting in Bahamas with all the money and drinking mojitos. Clone-sean is just fixing the game to trick us into that Sean really cares about the community. ;)

This is factually incorrect, Sean is drinking a piña colada, who likes Mojitos?

To some Star Wars is the best sci-fi has to offer. To me its not sci-fi but Futuristic Fantasy.
But it's set in the distant past... 🤔

Joking; I'm in broad agreement as to the definition of this one, but this is the sort of rabbit-hole you end up going down when you try to create universal categories into which to drop fictional creations, especially if you then attempt to make everyone use the same categories. It's an exercise in futility. Everything in art is subjective to some degree. It's a miracle any two people agree on anything, let alone hundreds.

I prefer the edited for realism version of their trailers.
Nearly five years on and that trailer still makes me laugh. Even though I think it's slightly harsher than the game deserves (but everything the trailer deserves) the timing of the edits and the sarcastic subtitles are spot on.

Actually, having not watched it in a while it occurred to me this afternoon that the lyrics of Out Of The Black seem more appropriate for forum PVP than anything in the game. Maybe they were on to something. 😉
