Hardware & Technical If you love immersion then you really need to get a Buttkicker Gamer 2

I just got a Buttkicker Gamer 2 off eBay Australia for $230 delivered, and it works great for a few games I've tried so far, but it does nothing in Elite:Dangerous. Is there a setting I'm missing?

And yes, for the games it works in, it is well worth having.

I'm having the same issue! I just got my Buttkicker Gamer 2 today. After setting it up and getting a good response from the Windows sound test and a pretty awesome response in Planetside 2 I get absolutely nothing from Elite. Weird. Anyone who's got it working care to share what settings they use? :S

Got mine yesterday. Nice boost to immersion, not a must have but still really nice. I think it will really come into its own when paired with an Oculus.

I did need to turn it right down. Even at half power it is completely over the top. At low power it feels about right, and also good fun in a MOBA as well.

I would be tempted to get one if there was a way to only have it respond to audio directly from a specific app, or even better still, if games actually actively supported outputting FF to it, like they do to gamepads/FF wheels etc.

I don't like the idea that the thing basically responds to ALL low frequency audio coming from the computer, as like people say, I don't really want it responding to my mates talking to me, or my music playing in the background.

Well you could just take it as the rumble from the speakers in your cockpit. Like those kids who drive around in a Vauxhall Nova with a boom tube in the back.

And if your configure it right it won't rumble from your mates speech. Unless you happen to be mates with Barry White or something.

Would anyone be willing to share their ButtKicker Amp settings for Elite Dangerous?

Mind arrived last night (fantastic bit of kit btw), I had a bit of a fiddle but couldn't get things just as I want them. For example boosting causes a massive "BOOOOOM!" effect on my chair (which is great but tooo loud..) yet I am not getting any vibration from my Chain guns unless I turn up the ButtKicker which results in the boost vibrations being even stronger :S (My neighbors will kill me at this rate!).

It's a shame that Simvibe doesn't support Elite. I have 4 Buttkicker mini LFEs on my racing rig and it really adds to the immersion. Racing seems flat without it.

The software takes telemetry data out of the software and converts it into various effects (road texture, road bumps, impacts etc) so it's not just providing feedback from low frequency sound.

my system is slightly different, it is a massage chair cover with 2 sets of audio inputs one is a woofer input which can be set to run the massage function and the other is a pair of small rear speakers at headrest level, the massage has 2 units on the seat base and 6 on the back. this is awesome and the level of the bass effects the amount/area of vibration and the intensity.

I don't have the Buttkicker yet and will probably get it simultaneously with Rift CV1 for maximum effect, however I have advice for those worried about music sending signal to the Buttkicker.

In your music player of choice (I will use VLC as I can control it in the background with voice attack), simply lower or cut off the required bass frequencies with the built in equalizer. I was afraid it would sound bad but I tried on my headphones and I hardly felt any difference, especially whith all the game's sound effects.

Been meaning to get one of these for a while. This thread just reminded me, purchased and hopefully arriving tomorrow :)

Well I spent a little more time last night trying to get my Butt Kicker setup just so. One major problem I have is that the device bottoms out when I boost, enter or exit a station or enter super cruise. The damn thing vibrates like mad! If I lower the intensity of the device I stop feeling the subtle bumps when I deploy / retract my hard points, cargo scoop or the vibrations from my engines kicking in.

Has anyone found a happy medium with this device, so I can feel a wide spectrum of sounds but not have the device go crazy when I boost or dock?

Right then. I have created a work around for the Boost noises being tooo loud when using a Butt Kicker or similar.

I've created a small application which controls the volume of your Subwoofer in the 5.1 surround sound audio mode in Windows and configured the application with a number of presents you can map to joystick buttons with the use of XPadder.

For example:

Map the H key to be boost in game, and then use XPadder to map the H Key to the joystick button you use to boost with. Now when you press boost in game my applications will:

1) Lower the Subwoofer volume to a user defined volume for the "Boost Charge" SFX

2) Raise the Subwoofer volume for the "After Boost" SFX

3) Raise the Subwoofer volume to 100% after both boost SFX have completed.

Basically eliminating the house shaking effects boost used to cause.

I have also programed 3 other keys which can be set as "toggle-able" key in XPadder, these can then be used for other situations which cause your Butt kicker to go crazy - such as when you enter a space port.

Again, all of the presets volumes are configurable. The only thing that isn't is the keys used to trigger the presets. You will have to use the ones I have defined and remap any conflicts in game.

If people are interested I'll upload the app over the next few days.

If anyone wants a way to manage the Buttkicker intensity during boosting, entering space ports etc give the following application a try. Installation / usage instructions are provided in the archive.

Keep in mind that I developed this for my personal use so it may have a few minor bugs.

Let me know if it helped or you can think of any improvements.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you will need Xpadder or an equivalent application to map joystick buttons to keys.
