Hello everyone,

In a similar fashion to our Lavecon 2019 reveals, we wanted to give all of you who couldn't join us at our Gamescom Frontier Community Meet a rundown of all the details that just dropped... or should we say hauled in here by the aid of... a Fleet Carrier!

December Update - The FLEET CARRIER Update

The news you've been waiting for... Fleet Carriers.

Take a peek below at the initial details about Fleet Carriers, coming as the December Update.

Ownership
  • Purchasable with a large amount of credits.
  • One Fleet Carrier per Commander. Available for base game and Horizons players.

Capacity
  • Fleet Carriers have a total of 16 Landing Pads, composed of:
    • 8 Large
    • 4 Medium
    • 4 Small
  • Set permissions to allow others to dock at your Fleet Carrier.

Operations
  • All Fleet Carriers feature rearm, refuel and repair services.
  • Commanders can choose a number of loadouts for their Fleet Carrier, governing services/module and ship availability to support a number of different activities, such as:
    • Bounty Hunter
    • Mercenary
    • Pirate
    • Trader
    • Smuggler
    • Miner
    • Explorer
    • Search and Rescue

Travel
  • 500 LY jump range (per jump)
  • Schedule jumps from the Galaxy Map when you want and from wherever you are in the galaxy.
  • Commanders require a unique resource to fuel the Fleet Carrier in order for it to jump.

We'll be delving deeper into Fleet Carriers and all they can do in upcoming livestreams and forum posts later this year!

September Update

For those of you who have been stranded out in the black and somehow missed it, here's also a super-duper QUICK recap of the September Update.
  • This year's updates are focused on improving the starter experience for new commanders. We're adding a fully-voiced, in-game, in-ship tutorial, covering the basics of space flight, combat, traveling and scanning. Also, this experience is available in all of our in-game supported languages! Speaking of you veterans, you'll be able to access this from your right-hand panel at any time so you won't even need to wipe your save!
  • In addition, we'll be reworking and rebranding what some of you might know as Frontier Points, introducing them as Arx. These Arx will be purchasable and used to buy Game Extras such as Paint Jobs, Ship Kits, Bobbleheads and more. What's great about Arx is that you will be able to earn them in-game by... simply playing the game!
The September Update will be launched 18 September for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One!

Fly safe, Commanders!
You guys should consider releasing the panther clipper as a stepping stone to this. Small or medium pads and have it be a multi role instead of a focused role ship but with less capability per role. Let people own both a carrier and a panther clipper.

Don’t forget to include the Ship Transfer function on these.
I don’t see them having Shipyards as such, but you’ll struggle to get your fleet on to one without that.
Not that it wouldn't be a useful thing to have but.

You could jump you Carrier to orbit alongside (or as close as possible) the station that you have called your fleet to.

As QA asks, loads of questions here regarding support vessels. Will the support ships actually do anything or are they there just to incidate to other players what the carrier's primary purpose is?

I mean, can the Mining Support vessel actually mine stuff? Does it have a cargo bay? Class 4 Mining Lasers? Limpets for sale?

maybe they can display livery items from the lovely ARX store :)

  1. What are the persistence rules for the Fleet Carriers / Support Ships?
  2. What are the connections, if any, between Fleet Carriers and Squadrons?
  3. Will it be possible for other players (designated by the FC owner) to schedule a jump and/or do other management tasks connected with FC ownership?
Basically, I'm very afraid it's another add–on which brings nothing in terms of multiplayer understood as a co–op backed by game mechanics. FCs as advertised don't look like having group ownership, nothing a group of players can work towards, then extend and care about in a group setting. Basically, FCs look like big ship with Ship Launched Other Ships, so nothing really new.

I'm sorry, but not everything can be just role–played… :/

Will we have a beta before December? Thing is, if they're really so expensive as expected, then the 'testing field' will be fairly thin in the beginning... with a beta we could all have a free one

You'll be okay. Void opal mining is too subject to rng to be fun for my tastes, but if you read up on the leading research and try painite mining its not that bad. Check the elite miners subreddit. 256 tonnes gets you ~200 million in a couple of hours (literally about 2) and the experience is productive and very pretty.

I'd like to know if I'll be able to store more than one of my own ships, which would imply a method of ship transfer.

Will there be module storage available and transfer facility's for them.

Will remote engineering be possible on a fleet carrier.

Will the custom role 'services' mentioned be choice of things like universal cartographics, interstellar factors, search and rescue agent, black market, commodity market etc ?

We still know little about the functionality of these Fleet Carriers but from what they've shown so far I find them a lot more interesting compared to my initial idea of what they would be like.
One Carrier per player, totaly unexpected, I realy thought that they would only be available to squadrons.
Different loadouts and support vessels, I thought they would be nothing more then a portable parking lot.

They look awesome but so do many other things in ED, it comes down to their functionality, costs and the grind that's gonna be involved in getting one and maintaining one.
The fuel needed doesn't involve shooting rocks though because the FC is also available in the non Horizon version of the game.

I sure hope Fdev will handle this new feature without reverting to the so much used materials grind aspect in the game. Let us have some nice things without placing it behind a repetitive and monotonous game mechanic for a change.

Btw, I think this FC should be realy expensive, it's a capital ship and you can only have one.

Wow! This looks very interesting. And I have to give kudos to Frontier for not walling them off as MP content only. Nice to see these are usable as SP assets and not just for squadrons.

As for the release date for the next update, while I was hoping for something sooner than Sept. 18, I concede that that is a better time frame as it is just a few days away from the best season of all: autumn! 🍂🍁 I just have trouble immersing myself in the frozen black of space while I bake in the summer heat. :D

Only if there's a hold for the rares.
Good question! If rare commodity purchase is capped by what's currently in your ship's hold, what's to stop us ferrying the capped amount back and forth to the carrier, assuming the "cargo" variant actually has any cargo space...

Might make unlocking Broo into a single trip! :)

[Note: "AX" variant will need a Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack option. ;) ]
