When was Engineering introduced to the game?

I started playing on ps4 shortly after it was launched on playstation store so I didnt have much background on the game, please forgive such a simple question but when did engineering start and why was it put in place? I have played for a few years I am a solo player and have gotten many request from them but there are so many other things to do in the game I couldent be botherd.
Was ther a flaw in the game they tried to fix with this function that I am missing? I know this always brings salt and I am not trying to start any its just a question I have. o7

Engineering is/was probably great for people like me (Solo players). Improved jump ranges, power etc.. makes most ships easier to manage, with some degree of personalisation/customisation.

OTOH, the multiplayer reaction is probably more negative in general. If the 'other guy' is engineered up the wazoo, then you kinda have to be too (or else be much, much better). So it does add quite a lot of grindy bits each time you add a new ship.

Also engineering went through some eras:

Grindeneer Era: the full casino grind: you needed rare cargo in addition to materials and spin the wheel of fortune
Casion Era: the less painful casion grind: cargo requirments where mostly scrapped, but wheel of fortune was still in place
Easyneer Era: Full engineer revamp, no more casino, and also material traders set up shop and remote workshops came! Yay!

If you're playing solo, you can get by fine without it for the most part unless you're going into conflict zones from which engineering give significant benefits.

Well i look forward to the 'casual player era'

It was added to artificially increase the longevity of the game. It's a pretty simple marketing calculation, the more time people spend in game the more likely it gets they buy paintjobs in the cash store.
:)
I think that's a little too cynical. I have issues with the implementation, but in essence the idea of personalising and improving our ships is a good one I think. In fact, I really enjoy the process, material gathering aside.

This put me off engineering for ages. I tried it once, when it first came out. Struggled to get the goods together to try one G1 or 2 upgrade on a pulse laser, then when I got it, it had such horrendous jitter it was impossible to hit anything.

I just thought "I don't know what I'm doing with this, it's not for me" and never went back to it for over a year. I'm sure there are still people who play the game who've still never gone back to engineers after a similar experience.

It's a hundred times better now though.

Yep, never gone back. And I'm not gonna waste any more time on this stupid crap.

It was introduced in 2.1 after the addition of Horizons (2.0). I guess it was introduced to give planetary landing a purpose, to farm materials on planet surfaces and use them during the engineering process. Else there would be not much purpose to land on a planet.

except, when it came out at first it was like you rolled the dice, they gave you something terrible and you lived with it.
You'd ask for faster drives, they'd shove a potato in your exhaust pipe and you'd be like, "Uh, this is worse"
They'd retort, "But see, integrity and heat management is good no?"
"I ordered the faster top speed modification"
"No refunds. I remove potato."
