My last haul was 223T Monazite and 1T Uraninite, I didn't feel like cracking an entire rock for a single ton, maybe next time. Still in the Top Ten with 744T delivered, over 200M earned. Had to dodge one interdictor but he was a creampuff, easy even in the Sojourner. Seems the CG is attracting more Commanders now, pushing the Tier up more and more. Brilliant!

Hi, this is my first community goal, and I'm having a real challenges with it.

Should I be laser mining or abrasion mining? And how would I know which was best?

I spent 2 hours at a Monazite hotpot in the Fray system (50 LY from LP339-7 and found only a single fragment of the stuff. Plenty of worthless rutile though).

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Monazite and Platinum you can find in Metal Rich Rings - deep core mining.
Genetrix (rather close of CG system) has a lot of pristine Rings, both Rocky and Metal Rich and you will find Monazite hotspots in both type of rings - tho i prefer Metal Rich rings.
I find one core about 10-15 minutes - ah, and make sure you have an A rated PWS.

Although you can do core mining, I've decided that ordinary laser mining is quicker and more productive for the purposes of the CG. If you use the tool at http://edtools.ddns.net/index.php?s= there are numerous systems with pristine metallic rings listed there - I've been going to HR 8514, which has a large station if you need any resupplies. The fifth planet has a metallic ring, and dropping into that you will find plentiful supplies of Platinum, Samarium and Osmium. I've been taking a python to the station there, topping up my fuel and buying the limpets there before heading to the rings to start mining, and am currently in Top 10 commanders. :)

BD-19 402 3 B-ring (about 38 lights from the CG system, common reserves) has 2 Monazite hotpots that have proven very well for me so far, rarely more than a few hours for a full load of 224T, a little longer if you want only Monazite and do only core cracking, but the rocks also feature Uraninite, Samarium, and other CG needs if you don't mind doing subsurface and laser mining as well as deep-core blasting. The two hotspots are odd in that one is large and features a large variety of minerals both for the CG and others as well, even cores, and the smaller is much smaller and located just within the edge of the larger Monazite hotspot. This smaller area is almost exclusively Monazite core rocks in terms of CG goals, but they are not densely packed, you may do some dry flying looking for them. The biggest problem I found early on is the "half-baked potatoes" that look as bright in the PWA as core rocks but have only rutile and a smattering of other junk. They are some of the smallest of the flagged rocks so it's easy to pass on them. Slightly larger are more potatoes (no CG goods at all) that shine almost, but not quite, as bright as the core rocks, so you need to learn the difference so you don't waste time and limpets looking at dross.

Later: Another decent though slow run at the BD-19 402 3 rings, 200T Monazite and miscellaneous other CG stuff. Looking at the status chart it seems the Top Ten cutoff point is now at about 1000T delivered, so get haulin' Commanders! I also noticed my Trade rank is getting rather uppity, about +11% per run. I started at 27% Tycoon and am now at 84%, so I'll likely be reaching Elite Trader with this CG.

Yeah there was very little there when I was there on Friday. Pretty sure the Monazite got mined out pretty quickly due to its handy location. You may have to travel quite a distance to find a decent spot. Good luck CMDR

What is generally considered a "decent spot"? Granted I spend a few hours each run getting there but the ring system I found at only 38 lights from the CG system has produced 1150T of CG material, the vast majority of it Monazite, and it's rated "Common Reserves." I know Pristine has a better rep but I've spent nearly as much time in those getting V.O. and LTD when learning core mining, but at lower quantities than I am getting now. My skill with the charges has improved and that helps, but I wonder if the near-insistence on Pristine reserves might be a hindrance at times.

Remember it is a CG tonnage is all that counts, the amount of credits earned is purely personal and after fuel, limpets and any ammo or repairs it is all pure profit so no need to get too greedy.

I found a (tiny) platinum hotspot in a nearby ring and saw almost everything BUT Platinum cores, lol.
Think I'll stick to laser mining for this one - even "Common" reserve rings seem to have enough of the 3 "junk" minerals to fill my hold pretty quickly.

Nah, Genetrix has 4 ringed planets with 1-2 rings each and multiple monazite hotspots.
Genetrix 2 alone has 2-3 Monazite hotspots in Ring A and some more in Ring B

A hotspot is huge enough. Just make sure you dont drop dead in the center. 1000-1500km in one random direction is enough to make sure you hit a fresh area

Now guys, get this CG to tier 8 :)

That's what I also experienced at the first system I hit for this CG, though I did find a number of rich cores of other minerals including a fair quantity of Monazite. I had pre-scouted a number of systems with rings before signing up, figured at least one would have paydirt. I guess I was lucky to find the pair of Monazite hotspots I've been digging in at the second system I checked out.

Thanks very much for this. It's taking time but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

I'm using my Python with a 4A refinery and 2 x 3A collector controllers. I've found that actually getting the fragments is the slowest part of the job.

With regards to pirates spawning in, is it one pirate wing per location per login? I'm trying to understand what's safe if my connection goes before I have a full hold.

Thanks again!

Yes 1 to 4 pirates each time you arrive or refresh the instance, occasionally none but that isn't the way to bet, this is for areas away from Resource Extraction Sites which can be much more violent.

I must have really pleased RNGoddess somehow -- in about 8 runs I've had only one instance of a single interested pirate, who high-waked out when I ignored him. All other visitors have been Federal Security ships, angels on my shoulder, I guess.

Yup, the last load did it. Still in Top Ten, have made over 500M in the CG alone, and earned top rank in Trade. Not bad, not bad...

You must have got to all the Monazite hotspots before me then! I've been through three and haven't found a single fragment.

Having to make do with platinum.. :(
