Dinosaurs “Ambushing” behavior mechanic (Baryonyx)

The idea is to have the Baryonyx hunt prey items by using a new “Ambushing” mechanic that differs from the current in-game “Hunting” behavior mechanic.

Currently, the “Hunting” behavior mechanic for predators activate when the AI of a carnivore chooses an available prey item which makes the prey stand in position and wait for the carnivore to go into position as well for the behavior to go into “Hunting” mode to start the animation sequence.

My idea for an “Ambushing” behavior mechanic would be vice versa. The carnivore AI would still need to activate the mechanic, but it’s the carnivore (or in this idea’s case, the baryonyx) who will go into position first and then it’s the prey item to do so secondly.

For the baryonyx, the “Ambushing” behavior would start whenever there is water nearby (which of course you would need to keep your baryonyxes happy anyway, outside of sandbox mode). To go into position, the baryonyx would run into the water and submerge itself as much as it can to hide itself.

Through my observations when playing the game, the baryonyx is small enough and the water is deep enough for this conceptual idea to work properly. When I waited for my baryonyx to go to sleep in an experimental save on Nublar, I saw that the baryonyx can lower itself just enough if it were to do this in water. You can’t add water below dinosaurs when they’re sleeping because the game won’t allow you to do so, but I can already tell it would be almost completely submerged if it did.

So, because of this, I think this would be a cool addition to have the baryonyx do its “Ambushing” behavior mechanic when under the water!

When the baryonyx is hiding in the water, the top of its head would be poking out of the water like a crocodile. Because of its large size and shallowness of the water, some of its back would still most definitely be exposed, but I doubt any wondering dinosaur would notice otherwise.

Once in position, the prey item (goats and herbivores a baryonyx can instantly kill) would go into position secondarily just feet away from the water’s edge, and that is when a script animation sequence plays out.

The prey would go forward to the water’s edge, but as it gets closer and brings their head down to drink, the baryonyx will leap out of the water and strike out, killing the prey item in the process. To add a little more personality to the baryonyx’s love for water, I can see it swinging a doomed herbivore over to the side, into the water, where it then finishes it off.

The idea is partially inspired by the baryonyx enemies in the console The Lost World: Jurassic Park game where, in the first Hunan Hunter chapter level, some baryonyxes will actually submerge themselves in areas where deep enough water is present.

One could say the Suchomimus and Spinoraptor, both of which are spinosaurs like the baryonyx, could have this behavior as well. However, because the suchomimus is a bit larger and the head isn’t as crocodile-like as the baryonyx, I think it would be best if suchomimus didn’t have this behavior. Similarly, while the spinoraptor is of small size, it doesn’t overly all look very aquatic-ish. So, it would be that the baryonyx will have this behavior as an exclusive since it’s both a cool concept to make dinosaurs feel more unique in-game, and while there is no current actual evidence that baryonyx itself did indeed do this in life, it’s definitely something I would imagine a Jurassic Park/World baryonyx doing in the film series.

I'm all for an ambush mechanic. It could be really interesting and add some variety. But why Baryonyx? The water doesn't seem deep enough for any larger dinosaur to be able to properly hide under water. Surely there are better candidates for this. Like some of the theropods that favour sprinting. Those would make good ambush hunters on land.

I know the water is deep enough for the baryonyx because I carefully observed it in my gameplay. The way how I see it is not making swim like a crocodile, but rather position itself in a crouched stance. So it would be still standing in water, but with much of its body lowered in a “resting” position. Then when it leaps out to snatch something, it would have to spring out by its feet to jump.

As for the other carnivores with any potential ambushing technique ideas, I feel like I would just expand my threat post much longer with too many extra details. The ambushing baryonyx idea already has plenty of details in just this one thread alone.
