Newcomer / Intro Dead Cartographics

Okay CMDRs,
I made a hash of it and got myself killed. Lost some valuable exploration data.

I’d like to rescan the systems I lost, but I can’t remember which systems I hadn’t sold yet.

Is retracing my steps for systems that have reverted back to “unexplored” the only way to accomplish this?

Indeed, retracing your trip i.e. via "Visited Systems" is the only way.

Systems sold will offer their System Maps, Systems that were lost AFAIK will be marked visited but no System Map to view.

PS.
If you encounter Systems that are of special value to you, it's always a good idea to Bookmark them. That way, you'll be able to find your "Exploration perls" if anything goes wrong.
(after Data is sold, such Bookmarks can be deleted before the next trip)

3rd Party Services like EDSM will be able to show you your travels if you uplink your Data into them; giving you visual and exact data-based (Flight Routes) of your travels.
Worth considering and they yield alot of useful additional Data during your Trips (i.e. Statistics, est. value of Data so far etc.).

Thanks for the suggestions, CMDR @FalconFly. Bookmarking is a great idea, unfortunately I did lose a couple of great systems. I'll just retrace my steps, then and get inara or EDSM running to help me. p.s. cute cat :D

@Dommarraa I can't let it go 😭

I'm actually not too far away from the systems, otherwise I would just scan-anew.

Assuming you scan all the systems again the only money and exploration points lost will be if any of the systems were first discoveries and someone else sells the data on them before you do.

I may be wrong, but EDDiscovery may help track your journey back.

ETA - yep, just checked. It does log your journey. A lot of info to wade through, but your system hops do show up. Handy tool.

Yeah, but just think of all the gems you could have found while you're trying to prevent that happening.:)

This is excellent, thank you. I tried Inara, but it's not showing my jumps correctly.

I'm new to ED, so now I'm wondering what other cool tools like this are out there.
I'm already using EDDI (as a plugin to VA).

Ashnak's post links to the thread - I posted a URL to the r2r (Road to Riches) that you may find useful.

@Ashnak Thank you. I'm signed up to Inara, which uses EDDN I think?
I'd like to use overlay tools, but I am playing in VR, so unfortunately I don't think they'll work.

@Tyres O'Flaherty Thanks, I will try it out. I've been using the spansh R2R but I've noticed it has actually missed some valuable nearby systems for some reason. I think there's something wrong with the algorithm.

It's a shame there's not a R2R on Inara or EDDN for example.

I looked at it in more depth just now - "I never knew there was so much in it!", as the saying went.

I filtered by "Sold Exploration Data" and "Jump" events, with an added "Died" tag so I could note which systems I visited before I bit the dust, and after I last sold exploration data.

Unfortunately, it is missing all of my "Sold Exploration Data" events, except my most recent one and my very first one. There must be an error in my travel logs or something.

Still, it has been useful to be able to note all the systems I scanned before dying. I had a good guess as to which ones I might be missing and when I double checked my galaxy map, it wasn't actually that many.

Thanks again CMDRs!

P.S. I just purchased my first "proper" ship - got myself a Dolphin :D
Goodbye Hauler, you did me proud.

Can confirm that now when you die outside your ship, you don't lose Cartographics data, Exobiology sample data, or Codex discoveries data.

I got killed in a ground CZ and still had all of those to hand in afterwards.

I don't know if you lose the Exobio if you somehow kill yourself before returning to your ship (running out of oxygen? A bad fall? Skimmer ambush?).

You don't need inara or EDSM, just set the star filter to "visited," this data isn't lost when you get destroyed, so you can just jump back along the chain of stars using the galaxy map.
