I guess that now raises the question, is a $300 Million space game a niche market?

One of often-mentioned examples is Zune. In May 2008: "Since its launch in November 2006, the Zune has sold 2 million units."

Considering the SC sales can be considered around 1 million copies (used to be "about half of registered accounts" but these days I suspect it's less than that, as whales might be duping accounts for various reasons, from referral contest over grey market to "creating poor PC workers") - yes, SC is a niche market. Heck, Elite with its ~2.5M sold copies across platforms is still a niche genre these days, or Dead Cells as an indie game (niche rogue-lite) sold a bit over 1M copies over its lifetime.

As i look at the tracker right now its been between 2 to 5 thousand an hour, still fairly good considering there isn't an active sale ongoing (unless they slipped out another sale recently, in which case not so good).

The problem though is that totally unaudited tracker cannot be trusted. It's apparent health is a part of the marketing campaign. It's like a company setting it's own stock price, of course we're gonna see it keep going up; anything else would damage the brand and the income.

Thing is, if it isn't broadly correct, then CIG should have already run out of money.

So who are the harbingers of failure?

To elaborate on what Tipps said, there is one guy who supports SC who has a habit of hyping new MMOs, proclaiming how they will be the next big thing, only for months or years later to never appear and development shut down, or when they do release, they are critically panned.

Its a bit on a meme on the SA forums to pray that he doesn't start hyping over a game you are interested in, because if he does, you know the game is doomed.

They probably have several times. That's why they needed the loan and the investor. It's a balancing act, the lie. Good enough to be believable, phony enough to keep the whales hooked. No one's going to believe they're still doing start of kickstarter money but it's got to look good enough to keep the confidence of the suckers.

or....ALL the other numbers (manpower mostly) are also grossly exaggerated meaning that CIG has had a much smaller burn rate for the last 5 years then assumed. The progress coming out of the studios would make that a realistic possibility. This would allow CIG to keep their funding tracker articially high at all times making it very much a marketing tool only. It might have a base of truth in it but in order to maintain steady growth despite all the stories pretty much tells of doctoring to secure backer confidence.

Woo hoo! $700 just so i can mine in a buggy alpha! PC gaming is saved!
Good luck mining anything with a picture of an ugly spaceship drawn on the back of a cigarette packet :D

Long before that refactored Hammerhead clone with a few dustbins glued onto it ever appears in Satire Citizen or Sqn 42...the game and it's progeny will have already ceased to exist after being slated for months by the gaming media, former backers will be seen toting guns around the many shell companies listed by the former Ci¬G looking to loot something, Chris Roberts et al will have fled to a country with no extradition treaties with anywhere...YouTube's resident Star Citizen crazy person, Montoya will be arrested after being discovered by police outside the home of Derek Smart begging for food...

Derek Smart himself will be hailed as the new saviour of PC gaming by redditors when he announces a crowd funding campaign to resurrect Battlecruiser 3000AD in partnership with a resurgent Crytek...the news of which prompts members of the SA forum to award him a doctorate in theology... In reply, Derek composes a 27 page blog thanking himself... and meanwhile, back at the ranch... we'll all be back flying our fleet carriers in ED whilst admiring our new space shoes ;)

To be fair most attempts to a new MMO in development probably fail to materialize anyways.

Less manpower than stated is indeed a possibility that would explain lack of meaningful progress in all these years. You could fudge numbers including some contractors etc. Thing is, iirc, the CIG financials state the 500+ figure is staff only so if that was the case they would also be lying there which seems a bit over the top.

People made the mistake to calculate estimates with a constant of 500 people working there when in reality Sandi mentioned it one time as if it was something special and it could indeed be the case that they at one point spiked to 500 people world-wide, including third-party contractors or maybe even people working there for free.

Is it possible that they spiked to 500 for a week or seomthing then dropped back to their usual real low number but list their workforce in the financials as that spike? I m not familar with the financial documents rules, are averages expected, total numbers for each month or can CIG basically list a briefly bloated number that was the case for a few short days out of the year?

Claiming publicly that you "earn" much more money instead of the real numbers is a really dull move and I doubt that CR is such an idiot.....As we can see so far they doing their BEST to properly "wash"all of those millions so that can be 100% legally clean.....

It sums the project so well: it must be true, but everything else around the project is so shady and deceitful I can't help thinking it's not as true as they want us to believe it is.

Exactly, its something that can really bite them in their behind if this whole thing ever gets before a court so its probably not outright lying but more legally accepted "adjusting" which allows them to represent a positive suggestion outwards without ever being accusable of outright deception. I dont believe the funding tracker is literally true but it has truth in it for sure....just how much and to what degree is anybodies guess.

I’m getting the feeling a lot is riding on Citizencon and a large portion of their funding is accrued around this time. CIG aren’t the most efficient company and any blips in cash flow could well bring this to a rather swift end.

Its a good one.

Comments are gold: From bad moderators allowing negativity and "trolls". Claims of people not understanding fidelity development. Declarations they can wait for perfection, that they have the patience to see the project through. Claims that most of the negativity comes from alt accounts set up specifically to talk bad about SC.

Its amazing. Its like they can't accept that people might have a reason to be critical.
