PSA: Conflict in Ratraii! Loren's Reapers Pledge to Drive the Dirty Rats Out!

Good day, Commanders!

As of now the brave pilots of Loren's Reapers are moving against a treacherous gang of criminals hiding in the shadows of Ratraii. Colonial Legionnaires, self proclaimed "protectors" of Colonia, are a dangerous threat to the security of the Nebula. Saying one thing but doing another, they work tirelessly to frustrate the efforts of Commanders seeking to make the Nebula a better place for all.

This situation cannot stand and the Reapers answer the call to fight!

We ask Commanders from across the region to join us against Colonia Legionnaires by attacking them wherever they may be found! Strike without mercy for these knaves will give you none. Furthermore, frustrate their plans in Colonia by refusing to support the Colonial Co-Operative in Ratraii! Work elsewhere in the Nebula and frustrate the efforts of these scoundrels to use your hard work for their own nefarious ends!

Thank you for your attention and good luck to us all.

-------------

OOC: Colonial Legionnaires (CL 76) claim the Colonia Co-Operative faction in Ratraii. Control in the system cannot be changed due to FDEV having a BGS lock on it. Ratraii is also a popular system due to its profitable bounty hunting locations. CL76 uses this to expand the faction essentially for free and interfere with other faction's efforts in other systems while being virtually immune to attack. Loren's Reapers will be attacking CL76 and Colonia Co-Operative ships wherever they may be found in order to punish this underhanded campaign.

Feel free to come out and have some fun no matter what side you're on!

I find this message cosmologically harmonious, and a good omen. As the Vermilion Bird passes into the Purple Forbidden Enclosure, luminiferous aether surrounding the Colonia nebula has become favourable towards engagement in deep space warfare, comfortable feelings, and starting a turtle pond.

Ah such good propaganda if I have ever read some. The words just jumped off the screen for a call of action towards some old gents being a nuisance to commanders that hunt and kill any unarmed ships for fun. But for all you other commanders that are rushing out the space lanes towards Colonia to do battle and hunt for these so called ‘Knaves’ and ‘Scoundrels’. I give you this warning, bulk up your armor on the rear of your ships, reinforce your shields for the one calling you out for assistance, will attack from behind and take you out.

You ask, ‘Why should I listen to you?’ Simple the answer is this; Colonial Legionnaires has been friendly to all those that come to Colonial seeking trade, bounty hunting, mining and exploration. They have assisted other factions during the Distant World’s expedition in defending that faction’s territory. They have been busy distracting those that would harm and destroy these unarmed exploration ships by putting themselves in front of the guns. As these members have their fleets out in Colonial and are able to support themselves and they don’t mind putting a fast nimble weak ship to be destroyed to keep these snakes, or reapers from harming the unarmed ships that they prey on.

By answering this call by Loren’s Legion and Loren’s Reapers, you have now put a target on yourself, as they will not have an issue in firing on you Commanders. You are their prey, so take heed. As for me, I am a Miner, Trader, and Explorer whose combat experience can be chalked up to skimmers on the planet. Although I do have combat ships, none of which could last one battle alone in a Haz Res Site. If you desire to hunt me, look for me in asteroid belts, for a ship that is slow, with mining gear and defenseless.
---------
OOC: If you are looking to say real things about what is going on, get your facts straight first. CL76 has been out in Ratraii calling it home since prior to Squadrons came to play, and have been friendly to all the other player factions that have claimed territory. Upon the introduction of player factions we have been attempting to get involved but the request has been denied. By the time we had enough members, all the area has been filled up and a truce was sent in place with Colonia and area. We did try to help Explorer’s Nation in Carcosa to prevent them from losing the territory to Gangers that flipped the Nameless, and currently trying to undermine other systems within Colonia. Yes we are a thorn in Ganger’s sides with ships that can be easily caught and destroyed, for that is the shield that the Legionnaires can provide to the other free commanders to take the heat off them.

They were pretty good to us too, helping in wars and such, until they started working against us.

As you wish, CMDR!

We did not seek conflict with the Colonial Legionnaires. They sought conflict with us. What business did they have, for instance, opposing us or our allies in the war for Pennsylvania? Their actions led to not one, but two bloody wars in less than month in which untold numbers of Pennsylvanians died in the conflict. Once defeated there the first time, they could have returned to their space, beaten and bloody, but otherwise we would have left them alone. But no. They had to continue to antagonize the good people of Pennsylvania and those who supported them. So they were soundly beaten a second time, and incurred numerous rebuys. And yet they still persisted! Do people not recognize when they are beaten?

CL76 opposes freedom of association and self-determination. They seek to impose their subjective vision of the Nebula's future on others, through the use of covert action and outright violence.

But come see for yourselves, CMDRs. Loren's Reapers welcomes the help of all freedom loving CMDRs, and opposes those who believe in forcing their authoritarian values upon the rest of the galaxy. Colonia does not "belong" to them or any other group. It exists for all, and until this simple fact is recognized, the war against CL76 will continue unabated.

And as they say, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. We are most definitely the latter, despite the propaganda of those who say otherwise. o7

Hi there, Commander! I'm not sure who you are or what your interest in this fight is, but I'll address a couple of your points from our own experience (on top of the already excellent posts from my colleagues).

First off, we've no interest in destroying "unarmed exploration ships" for the sake of it and reject this frankly pathetic (and sadly common) attempt at slander.

As far as your claims to CL76's good and helpful nature, I'll simply ask you to look at what they do not what they say.

When we arrived in Carcosa in March they opposed us on behalf of their then masters, Explorer's Nation, thinking we were nothing more than rabble. We came to an agreement where they would leave The Nameless alone. They betrayed that and attacked the Nameless anyway. After The Nameless' resounding victory in Carcosa LRCV and CL76 maintained cordial relations, something perhaps approaching friendship, until CL76 decided that the actions of our friends in Pennsylvania were again caused by nothing more than troublemakers (when in fact, some of the people behind the Pennsylvania operation are some of Colonia's oldest and most devoted benefactors). CL76 cut all diplomatic ties with our group without a word and brutally attacked our people without warning.

To put it another way, I simply don't understand the mindset that dismisses the achievements of others not like them in Colonia as the acts of mere "griefers."

That is fear. Not courage.

Choose courage. Stand with us and make Colonia a better place for all Commanders.

I don't know. I fly an unarmed cardboard box and I've never been fired upon by any of the Loren's Legion members I've come across. On the contrary, I've been greeted as a friend or at least treated as a friendly ever since I set my little exploration shop on Robardin Rock.

Oh good lord. The freedom fighters who tell you where and what your allowed to do and work for or against lest you be killed. Whatever. Gangs moving up to make more anarchy systems for consequence-free killing is not something I could support. I was initially interested in working with LRCV, but I quickly decided otherwise when they started telling me what I was allowed to support up here. You know, to bring me that sweet, sweet, freedom.

Sure you’re free to associate as you wish, but if you associate ‘wrong’ you’ll find a wing of three waiting for you at the station.

I’m not defeated till I’m out of credits. Keep the finger on that boost button.

You’ll be fine, with them, as long as you aren’t working to do anything they oppose. I was friendly with them too and I personally like many of the members and found them friendly.

Phisto, not so much

Here’s the chief “freedom fighter’s” own words. He likes the role play. That’s fine. Just understand the role and yes, freedom fighters and terrorists use propaganda with the best of them.

Perhaps it’s a little tacky to quote your own character at the beginning of an out of character piece. I can’t help it. Ever since concluding my story Endgame and my former faction’s in-game war for the Coma system no other phrase will do. Before I get to meat of the piece, let me provide a little bit of context by way of a proper introduction.

With the Beyond series of updates Elite: Dangerous is at a crossroads. Many people will likely decide if this game is worth their time and energy by early next year. With all the discussions on Discords, forums, and elsewhere I’m therefore feeling reflective. This spring will mark a very big change for me inside the game and will set my course for many months to come. Might be a good to think about how I got here in the first place. Put things on record, you know?

Despite what anyone may tell you I don’t claim to be special in Elite or life in general. You’re reading the words of a regular guy who gets up in the morning, goes to work, and comes home. He’s got loved ones, pets, friends, enemies, and a list of personal failures and triumphs stretching back decades.

So where did this Phisto Sobanii guy come from anyway?

Playing the Villain

I first heard of Elite: Dangerous the week it became available on XBOX. My friend told me it looked pretty cool, was about spaceships, and that you could fly around the galaxy and do whatever you wanted. Having just come off the Mass Effect trilogy and being a fan of games like Wing Commander it seemed like a good time. We bought the game, met up in Eravate, and started our adventure. I imagine it was a lot like anyone else’s experience. We crashed our Sidewinders, got blown up in conflict zones, ran trade routes, and rarely saw any other Commanders before one fateful day in Gende.

Another player this far out! Oh wow! This is crazy!

By this time we’d worked our way up to Master combat rank and each owned A-rated Fer De Lances. That seemed to impress our new friend so he told us about his player group. We asked him what they liked to do.

‘We like killing Commanders.’

Killing Commanders? How do you do that if you can’t even find them? Naturally, he told us. He and his group spent most of their time in Sol and the starter systems looking for any kind of peer to peer combat they could find. Sometimes it was just blowing up harmless trade ships, explorers, or newbies, but often it’d turn into a proper brawl with all kinds of excitement.

Now, let’s back up a second. Remember what I said about just having finished the Mass Effect trilogy? In that game you’re basically a super powered version of ‘Space Jesus’ - the hero to end all heroes. Not unlike most games, to be honest. Half-Life, Halo, Mass Effect - all of these and others put you in the role of the god-hero out to save the day. Fast forward back to Elite. Once we got to Sol and got the low down from the other players this seemed to me like a great chance to experiment and do something different.

I could finally play the bad guy for once.

So we did and by gods did we fight and kill a lot of Commanders! There was a lot of ganking, but more often than not ‘good guy’ factions on XBOX would rally up and come for us. Before long this gimbal laser scrub was whipping around fleet engagements in a silent running all plasma accelerator Fer De Lance!

It was amazing.

Much of it was also really, really stupid. Looking back, it’s hilarious how bad some of roleplay was. Had some real Saturday morning cartoon villain level stuff going on - ‘We don’t want your cargo! We just want your soul!’

And we were in Sol? Get it? Cringe, I know.

But hey, gotta walk before you can run, right?

Joining Inara Roleplay

Of course our new found friends introduced us to the wonders of Inara.cz. We had to join the wing, you see, and take advantage of all the amazing information available thanks to the amazing and illustrious Artie. All that said, it was the role play forums and logbooks that caught my eye.

Wait, people write about Elite? Oh my gods, some of this is really good.

Like many others on Inara I quickly discovered the talents of Marra Morgan. Her logbooks chronicled the rise of a drug addled smuggler to the highest echelons of power of Black Omega, one of the Pegasi Sector’s most powerful and feared firms. What got me even further wasn’t just the quality of her dramatic storytelling but also the fact it reflected what was really happening in the game. The adventures of her and the Black Omega crew informed her writing, inspired others, and created a world within Elite with real texture, intrigue, and excitement.

So, how to jump in on all this? Well, guess I decided exactly that: jump in.

Phisto Sobanii was born of a very simple idea: ‘What would a serious attempt at roleplaying a ganker look like?’ I imagined a suave and wise cracking ole completely sure of his abilities in the cockpit and the bedroom. Dressed in the finest suit money could buy with even more expensive tastes to match, he quickly became an egotistical, brash, but ultimately fun loving and heartfelt character. A ‘ganker with a heart of gold,’ I’ve heard it said.

Naturally, my earliest attempts had their own awkward moments and a few false starts but I was earnestly trying to learn. And thankfully, in spite of my greatest fears, the Inara community welcomed me with open arms. Yes, you’ll notice I said fear there. Folks can be really hard on you when they find out you like blowing up other people’s spaceships in a video game. I was worried I might not get the chance to join the fun. Once again to their endless credit, the fine folks of Inara proved me wrong. Probably saved a lot of Commanders rebuy that way!

Kidding aside, they ultimately inspired me to ‘git gud’ with my roleplaying and storytelling. My new group, Newton’s Fusiliers, wouldn’t just be about mindless ganking. We’d start to find meaning for the crazy we did and along the way figure out not just how to be the bad guy but look good doing it. As some fans (and detractors!) of the Fusiliers already know we’ve had quite the ride over the past year and a half. There was our secret role in the Premonition event, our terror attacks in Quince, the pillaging of Ghost Legion’s capital of Phiagre and subsequent liberation of Findja, and countless other stories lived across the Elite: Dangerous galaxy.

Needless to say, a little bit of creativity took us a long way from just shooting whomever came by Sol. Little did we know the best was yet to come.

The Coma War

In April of 2017 Newton’s Fusiliers were placed into the game as a player minor faction in the system of Coma. Unbeknownst to us at the time, it was a valuable control system for the Denton Patreus PowerPlay community. As an Anarchy government type, we were in direct conflict with one of the largest and most well organized groups in the game.

Without getting into too much detail, I’m going to stick to what’s relevant to this piece. Bottom line was a chance was given to a bunch of no good dirty griefers and gankers to fight for the most meaningful thing any of us can have in-game or out.

Home.

You see, over the weeks and months I’d spent playing I learned something very crucial about the role of morality in good story telling. Good and evil is for children and their Saturday morning cartoons. Adults want protagonists, antagonists, and the mature understanding that morality is just a matter of perspective.

And so, Newton’s Fusiliers provided exactly that during the Coma War. We were the good guys while the Empire were the bad guys. Of course, their side thought of it in exactly the opposite manner, but that’s the point. We believed in the righteousness of our cause and they believed in theirs. For about six months the conflict raged in earnest with both sides fighting on all fronts - PvP, BgS, PowerPlay, and even Forum PvP. You name it, we fought there! In the end, both sides negotiated a treaty that satisfied them both. We had Coma. The Empire had peace.

Now, who really were the bad guys? Who were the good guys? Hard to say really, but that’s the fun. Are Newton’s Fusiliers just ‘a bunch griefers?’ Ask any of our friends, and you’ll find that’s not true. The Coma War changed us for the better as a group, players, and even people. Several have said it was the most incredible thing they’d ever witnessed in Elite: Dangerous.

And you know what, all ego aside? It was pretty special. I’m humbled and honored to have played a role.

What about the Empire? I suppose they were just glad the whole affair was over. You’d have to ask them to be sure. What I can say for certain though is relations between Newton’s Fusiliers and Patreus’ planning group have never been better. Hell, we’ve even done small favors for each other these past couple of months. Imagine that.

I guess that brings me back to Phisto’s quote. What’s next? To be honest, hard to say. The restoration of Loren’s Legion has just begun. The future is out there.

Whatever it is though, if the journey is half as much fun as it’s been?

I can’t wait!

You're welcome to support Colonia Co-Operative. However, don't be surprised when there are consequences for interfering in the business of others.

Here’s the chief “freedom fighter’s” own words:

You mean... you mean the piece where I explain how I turned from ganking and decided there was a better way to play the game based on my experience in Premonition and elsewhere?

Thanks for posting that, I guess! I'm quite happy with my Elite journey and love sharing it with people.
