Maintaining long term interest in exploring/ mining.

Ps4 pro
Mostly Solo

Ok, so I've done the big trip, 60k+ lys, Sag etc, and I've done the mining thing more or less to death. Yet I am still interested in exploring BUT, there really isn't anything really unknown to find.
Keeping the mystery.
So, suggestions,
  • Place unknown alien artifacts of various unknown technologies, structures, that can be discovered at great distances from Sol that do not respawn in any scanned system or same location, to prevent community charting. Allow those unknown artifacts to be sold to a specific trader at massive value or exchange for other tech/ guardian modules etc...
  • Create a number of unknown metals that can be discovered only in outer galactic regions, that are extremely rare and do not respawn in scanned systems. Metals or minerals that can be traded at a specific r&d station or engineer for massive value or benefit **. Planetary, ring or field. Again prevent community charting, create a mystery and a legend.
(**) Example: Benefit could be that the metal allows you to max out all your materials inventory when traded say 10 units of the unknown metal for one materials max out, as a reward for discovering new metals...
The idea of core mining a new commodity eg. Void Diamonds that are only able to be mined in virgin only systems or rings in the extreme outer galactic regions. One session only with out respawn. Not able to be charted by community to minimize predictability.

  • Have rare surprise visitation/flyby by unknown interstella alien starships, not able to be attacked and doesn't attack. Temporarilly disables the CMDRs ship during fly by. Create a legend, share photos, video. Does not respawn in scanned systems. Again ...only in Virgin systems.
Basically build mystery into the milky way, and make some of it unknown again.
Entice players to explore by generating unpredictability and diversity and the chance of bragging rights and big money/ tech.
Create a gold rush attitude....
Encourage exploration, scanning, mapping, mining and planetary landing in the outer regions.
I do not believe it would be too hard to program it all, and the long term benefits to ED would be significant for nominal dev time. IMO

Good idea. It also means exploration can have different variants - taking the gear to mine along or not. I presume such hotspots would be visible by FSSing the system?

too easy if only FSS needed for mining exotic hotspots. IMO. Treat exotic metals the same as you would Void opals, ring scan then list hotspots as "unknown".
ED would only need to create a commodity called "Unknown". ( subject to R and D) and include it in station trading markets, limit random spawning to rings in virgin systems etc...
FSS perhaps for detecting alien presence in system but not specific location or artifacts. Got to make it tough, with many clues but nothing definitive to use to predict with.

A full explorer rig would then include a mining ensemble, SRV, mapping and cargo space for exotics.

Have you seen ED codebase?... What I do believe is that your faith is barely related to real complexity of the software after years of the development.
Yes you are correct. My bad...
I may in my ignorance of ED code infrastructure be suggesting stuff that is way to difficult to manage. I am assuming a situation where the devs have a control panel with an operating system that allows some form of settings control. Perhaps they do, but it is fragmented into separately evolved divisions/departments that do not necessarily cross platform all too well.
Maybe I should have asked a few question first:
For example : How hard is it for ED to include a new commodity?

say, Void Diamonds located only in icy rings in the extreme outer systems.
I have no idea how difficult that would be.

Perhaps starting a thread topic on ED coding insights would have been a more wise approach?

I guess the most important message I am attempting to convey is that, to me, ED provides a vast unexplored Galactic platform that could very well be, still be made use of 50 years from now. In fact there is no reason for it to ever to become obsolete so long as the ED galaxy remains as reality based as possible.
For example updating the systems to include actual astronomical discoveries keeps it relevant to the star gazing enthusiast adds a greater feeling of immersion in a reality premised simulation. The psychological implications are significant even if very subtly rendered.. as such I do not believe ED is a Game, as it is more a reality based simulation.

The exploring adventure offered is ED's bread and butter layer and I believe with a little work adding perpetual mystery to the galaxy will give that base line layer of player activity a boost in long term interest.

Hmm, I like the idea of shy aliens. Perhaps a Guardian AI remnant if completely new species is out of the question. They could live in these massive ship/stations that only appear in USSes in unexplored systems. Once you jump in, they'll power up their drives in a couple of minutes and jump out, never to be seen in that system again.

All sorts of astronomical phenomena on existing celestial bodies would be great too, but not a simple thing to implement, I suspect.

and the Devs will have to create a section 52 ultra high classified area that leaks just enough to get people out there going for it.... lol
