Celebrating 35 years of Elite!

Best memory for me was literally a jaw dropping one. Two years after playing the relaunched game (thank you Mr Braben for keeping your vision alive... yeah, I was an addict back in the 80's as well) I found myself strapping on my shiny new VR headset and watching utter amazement as the launch pad lifted me up into the hub of a Coriolis station. I must have just sat there for a good 20 minutes just watching virtual life going on around me. The game is amazing in 2D (despite the occasional development hiccups on the journey), but to see it fill the world around you is another thing entirely.

A massive thanks to whoever came up with the inspiration to support VR out of the box and for those who haven't yet experienced it.... try to, you won't be disappointed!

My favorite memory of Elite......

Showing the game to my 12 year younger brother who was completely freaked out when a missile got fired at me.

I just calmly turned to face it, adjusted my aim with a couple of taps on the keys and shot the missile out of the sky.

God, he was impressed :D

My first memory of Elite was... visiting a friend and looking at Elite for the first time on the very first BBC B computer I had ever seen and him saying” Take over for me, it’s been hours. Get to that place, I don’t know what but there’s a mission, I got it but died! For the love of God just get me there”. The start of a long path of Elite on different platforms and still playing. AdhesiveHusks.

A long time ago, when to earn money i sold slaves in the black market of station with my Cobra Mk3 😄
To give some credits to my friend, just release some slaves into space so they can grab them ...

It's my best memories 😅

My best ED menory when I first start ED and play it. "Whow! This IS the original elite but better graphics!"
I always scared to fly in dangerous space. In first month I flew only between nearest 3-4 system because I scared to fly further :D

Picking a favorite memory is a pretty daunting task for a game like this, but I'll give it a shot. I think my favorite one is from waaaay back when I made my first attempt at flying outside the Bubble by trying to reach Betelgeuse. I didn't do so hot the first time around as I didn't know how to pick out the scoopable stars and had to turn around and go back after hitting a wall of dead stars. I was nearly stranded out there! Later on, I gave it another shot, this time with a bit more care given to which stars I passed through, and I finally reached my goal. Oh, and what a sight it was; that star is huge!

I've always been into space an astronomy since I was young, and got into the hobby of amateur astronomy before I even owned my first video game console or computer. I have seen many galaxies, nebulae and solar system objects through the lens of a telescope. One of my favorite objects has always been M42, the Orion Nebula because of it's high surface brightness and incredible presentation.

When I first stated playing Elite Dangerous a few years ago, I knew from the start I wanted to be heavily involved in exploration, given my interests in real life. My favorite and most profound moment was my first trip out to the Orion Nebula. Seeing it up close and personal in game was just a sight to behold. At that moment I came to realization that I could visit so many of the very same objects I have seen numerous times through a telescope, and experience them in way that I never had before. That was back in 2016, and here three year later I am still enthralled by the universe of Elite.

Happy 35th, Frontier.

My favorite moment when my friends where playing, flying in wing and jumped in through a star, the combined yelp of fear was something to never forget

My best moment of Elite wasn't playing it on my Atari ST back in 1984 from literally sun up to sun down nor was it playing Elite:Frontier in 1993 and finding out we could land on planets for the first time. It was finding out that it was coming out on the PS4 on a new generation of machines. Just keep the fun coming and I'll keep hauling those hundreds of light years across the lonely galaxy. :coffee:

My earliest Elite memory.
I acquired a second-hand BBC Micro in early1985 when I was at college and rushed out to get a copy of Elite because that was the only thing I wanted to play. Came back home from the local computer store and the game wouldn't work! It transpired the BBC computer I had was running an older ROM chip that was incompatible - and there began my first attempt at fiddling with the insides of computers. Determined not to be denied my space game I bought a BBC Micro magazine, hunted the ads in the back, and found a company selling the ROM chip I needed. Just over a week later it arrived in the post and with my very limited knowledge I somehow managed to open the computer, remove the old chip, and install the new one without completely killing the machine.
Happily the upgrade worked, the game would now run and from then I spent countless hours staring at those old wireframe graphics.

Favourite memory was when I docked the first time in Zaonce back in August 1985. Was great because at first I did not want the game and told my dad that I will never play Elite and once I tried it (only because I ran out of games) I got hooked and kept playing :) More recently in honour of my dad, I fully engineered a Cobra MkIII, aptly named Dad's Gift, and got the last 2% of combat elite in it. Couldn't be prouder than achieving that and hitting triple Elite in a Cobra MkIII. Kind of sent me back 34 years :) - CMDR Bron Mozma on PC

Best memeory is crashing my ship after thinking i knew how the game worked

The game. Elite Dangerous. Those flashing black screens until you get to the main menu. The confusion on what to do and more importantly HOW to do whatever it is that I was supposed to do.

The confusion coupled with the excitement of playing Elite is the most memorable moment. I still get Nostalgic every time I load the game. Thanks to FDev, I get to relive my most memorable moment every time I hit "Play" on Steam.

Thank you for a great game and high hopes for the future updates.

Cheers.

My best memory would be the first time I jumped into the game. For me it was a feeling of inmersion I've never felt in any other space game. Learning the first steps, taking off, jumping to another system... Being amazed by the beauty all around me, the detail in sound design and the depth in mechanics. From there the game just got better the more I learned and I have many good memories through the journey. But after +1000 hours in the game I'll always remember that first impression of becoming a commander.

My favourite memory is actually outside of the game itself - we were a bunch of guys in school playing Elite on C64 - One friend greeted me every day with a healthy - "and -are you dangerous already?"
Cheers to you, Carlos, if you should read this!! O7

Sometimes, the most frustrating moments in a game are the best moments( after all, from built a hugely successful franchise off them). My favorite moment has to be from a couple years ago, I had always been curious about elite dangerous after seeing it come up in my recommended section on Xbox, I had a tendency to jump blindly into games to figure things out at my own pace, I was immediately enthralled by the expanse of the galaxy before me, diving into a number of various activities in my sidey, eventually settling on bounty hunting. A couple weeks go by and I've bought myself a cobra III and outfitted it, still no idea how to properly set up my distro and about the secondary repair tab, I eventually end up trying my hand fighting the thargoids but have to make a quick escape from my first engagement, stopping at a nearby star on my way to a station to scoop fuel, not understanding just how narrow an escape I had made until first my distro goes, then my canopy, then finally my power plant as I carelessly got too close to the star and suffered the consequences of not paying attention to my ship's integrity levels. That experience was frustrating enough to put me off the game for about 2 weeks before ironically it dragged me back in, along with a few friends, after all I had noone to blame but myself for the rebuy, and that level of detail more than made up for the experience, so here's to 35 years of elite, to learning from mistakes, and seeing you all in the black, o7 --- CMDR kickedurchin6 on Xbox

Elite was a massive part of my journey to adulthood and was partly responsible for my terrible GCSE results (the other part being my general lack of interest and intelligence) in that I spent all my time trying to save enough credits for military lasers on my Atari ST version than I did revising. I got 17% in my maths exam but hell I knew how to take down a Thargoid! After many dark years of an Elite vacuum, I learned of a game called Elite Dangerous being released on console and PC...wait what? Elite what??? Is that like the elite I played as a teenager in the 80s??? With graphics like that? Daaamn this is insane!!! The excitement to get my hands on this iteration was literally insane and the days dragged until it’s release. Installing took decades, loading took forever but oh my god, when that first screen of me sat in a sidewinder pixelated its way onto my screen I nearly had a coronary and the memories of flunking GCSEs to get military lasers flooded back....such good gaming memories. Now, age 46, Elite Dangerous has me flunking wives, family, friends and jobs trying to save for a fleet carrier! Good times are back!
Thanks Frontier, thanks ED, thanks to all the team and staff for controlling pretty much my entire life with space farring adventures. Love it!
Happy Birthday! Get drunk, fall over.

First ever time docking on a flipping rotating Space station in front of a whole class of kids, while we bunked off doing our GCSE’s and played Elite on the schools BBC’s instead.

Some of the lads in our class clubbed together to buy a copy as it was the 80s and nearly everyones Dads were unemployed.

our copy of Elite made a lot of poor kids very happy that summer.
