What to do about Griefers

I've just been killed by a Griefer and I was sent to jail for trying to run away and breaking the speed limit outside Jameson, whilst he was ramming me?!

I've see them daily now, why do the space police not do anything about it? Are there no consequences for a griefer other than pay a fine? Is there no permanent outlaw status, where all police hunt you down after so many kills outside a space station?

I can't believe this is the way the game is intended, to have effectively immortal psychopaths running around.

Is my only option to go on a private server?

to have effectively immortal psychopaths running around.

Hey, that sounds like a good plot for a movie. It could be set with the protagonist being scottish being hunted down by a psycopathic russian immortal. It could be called Highlander or something.

Anyway, your three options are to learn to how deal with it, just accept it, or go to PG/solo when around those sorts of locations (Jameson, Engineer bases, etc).

If i understand right though, you were not sent to jail for running away, and he is not immortal. My guess is he is running a weak small ship and as soon as he saw you break the speed limit he rammed you, resulting in his explosion and you being penalized for causing a death.

To be honest, if this is the case, then it is over the line where i would consider it griefing. Its intentionally abusing game mechanics to cause another player problems.

The way to deal with this is to simply keep your speed below 100. Not just below, i mean quite a bit below. If you are just below they could give you a speed boost as they hit you. If they blow up while you are below 100, it shouldn't penalize you (in theory, i don't know about the reality... if it does though, raise an incident every time it happens to push FD into fixing it).

I'm not sure about the status of docking (and undocking) computers. I seem to recall someone saying it wasn't possible to be penalized if the docking computer is in charge, but i have no idea if this is true or not.

Anyway, drop your speed to around 70 when around these areas and keep it steady until you clear the no fire zone unless you are sure there is nobody around who wants to cause you problems. Be aware, some use silent running to stay off the radar, so before going faster, just use the external camera to take a gander around your ship and look for thruster trails.

Hope that helps.

Also, report the CMDR that is doing this to FD if you think its griefing. FD can then decide whether it is or not.

The best way to deal with station-rammers (if you want to stay in Open) is to use the Block function.

It works. When I used to play in open I'd take a cheap "disposable" ship out to all the usual haunts (CGs, Shinrata, Deciat and the other engineers) and fly around and let the griefers kill me, adding each one to my block list. This would "clear the road" for me in my bigger, more expensive ships. My block list was huge and my flights relatively safe... though it is not perfect, new griefers will pop up all the time.

Or fly in solo, you really aren't missing much in open, is the occasional "o7" from a passing commander really worth it?

The problem is, I was testing out a new build with a poor jump range and now I can't get back to Jameson at all.

I'm blocking them all now, even the ones I see attack others.

Don't break speed limit. 🤷‍♂️
But I was trying to run away!

Over twenty thousand populated systems in the Bubble, and all but maybe ten of those systems are griefer-free. Why go where the griefers are? Go to Jameson in Solo, buy your modules, and then move your fleet somewhere else and switch back to Open. Problem solved!
This sounds like the best plan, I'll be in solo more until I find a better home for my fleet.

There’s no major rigmarole to join what you term a “private server”. It’s just another game mode activated by a form to the moderator and an in-game menu joining request.

It’s called Mobius. Here’s a link:

No need to play with the station-ramming immersion-breaking idiots of Open any more.

What to do about griefers? Nothing.

Starting a discussion here has proven to be utterly futile. Many. Times. Over. You won't even get beyond a common agreement about what griefing is or isn't.

I usually play in Open, and barely ever see other Cmdrs, and 99.9% of the time either we don't interact or a friendly "o7" is exchanged. There is exactly one place were I drop to a private group before venturing, and that's Shinrarta Dezhra. If I'm going there, its for outfitting, and I don't need any hassle. Cmdrs in that system with other intentions are free to do what they want without judgement from me, so long as we all understand they'll never actually see me there.

Dont try to run away, if he hits you he would get a bounty and get blown up by the station in 2 seconds, you broke the rules so they didnt help. Dont just go around blocking everyone, just stick in solo or group until youre ready to fight back :)

Wing up with someone else, or do multi-crew

However unfair it might be, cruising outside Jameson in open will kill you sooner or later, and that even goes for the "best" gankers. If you want to avoid that, stay in solo. I've only recently started flying in open, and as the Duck said, almost all other parts of the galaxy is free of gankers. However, if you want to test your PvP "skills" Jameson is the place to go. You'll end up at a rebuy screen, but you learn something new each and every time. It seemed absurd to me when I started playing the game, but it kind of makes sense now. As much as anything absurd in this Universe can make sense.

...

Your griefer wouldn't necessarily have known this....but he does now!

In a system far, far away:

"Verity? Please remove 'Celebration' by Kool & the Gang from my playlist & replace with 'Perfect Day' by Lou Reed!'

"Oh it's such a perfect dayyy, I'm glad I spent it with yooouu... 🤣"
