ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Fired up beta 2 for the 1st time.

on my GTX670 on low detail from what i can tell the experience is flawless framerate wise.

this is both in and out of a space station (aulin as well so a biggun)

this is a big step up from beta 1 which always stuttered for me in the station.

on high outside the station it was fine but in was horrible.

mid may be a good fit for me. slight stutter in station but otherwise fine.

Not been to an asteroid belt yet.

need to figure out the system map and galaxy map as could not see names other than the system i was at

and there seemed a few odd ggraphics issues.

some of the space eye candy felt like 2D images just ouside of my reach which was a bit odd,

also is it me or have they upped the space dust a heck of a lot?

other than that visuals generally improved accross the board

a few other non rift related issues but that is for another thread.
ohh and all online was really flaky, got kicked 3 times before just going to solo which seemed to work.

this was on extend. direct didnt work.

I only tried for 20 mins

All I can say is WOW. I was not expecting such a big improvement, at all. I was just flying circles around a station with my mouth hanging open. This makes what I was seeing before, which I felt was pretty damned mind blowing, seem like a blurry mess. Everything is crystal clear and the colors appear to be so much more vibrant. This is just amazing. I'm speechless.

OMG
My camera works after 2 months.
Spent ages looking at the mini station. I'm scanning some kind of after jump things.
Now just figured out how to bind head reset f12 to my controller.
OMG

Plans of building up some credits out the window I'm just going to fly around with my mouth open.

OK, I filed a ticket before I left for work about the Rift issues, and they replied more or less instantly.

Basically, you have to set your config as specified here.

Direct Mode does work, but it's not very good sadly, Crossfire / SLI will fail, and there are other issues with it too. You need to set it to Extended mode still for now... but you don't have to disable the service any more.

I tried it briefly, and got it working, but it crashed at the spinning Sidewinder. I'll try again tonight.

Hehe, 'grats dude - enjoy. :D

This is what we were promised when we were kids. And it's finally here.

I have just logged out after about 45 minutes of play (SOLO as the servers are on fire) and wanted to report in that for those you running SLI you can expect a real treat.

I've been holding off buying one of the new 900 series to see how ED handle SLI in this update and so far (admittedly onIy 45 minutes far) I have to say it works brilliantly.

I first tried with my single 680 in the tutorial missions and the asteroid field, despite being very purdy was chugging along at 45 FPS. I dropped out and forced alternate frame rendering 2 via nvidia control panel and logged back in and immediately hit 75fps in the same scenario. I then tried the SOLO play and various different stations all of which I never dropped below 75FPS even on HIGH settings. The SLI scales really well with 90% usage on both cards in the station.

I realize that SLI potentially adds a frame of latency however I really cannot detect the difference after logging back in several times with each method. The most important thing is that low persistence is working and you have no frame drops.

I'm off work today so plenty of time to play around but so far this looks like a great implementation for those of you with SLI. Hopefully Crossfire got the same treatment.

Looking forward to them getting the servers sorted out but SOLO for now is enough to explore the new game mechanics.

I did a quick test this morning.

Got a 3770k / 7950 combo and well, even on lowest settings sadly I still have judder in/close the start station. In open space its fine.

Nevertheless the things I saw were stunning. Outposts are an awesome addition!

Since i update to Beta 2, i have extreme stuttering in Stations.
Framerate is about ~60 to 65 (same as Beta 1), but when i am moving my head, the picture stutters extreme!

Anybody else has this issue?

Are you running it in Direct or Extended mode?
Try Extended if you are in Direct currently.

Alternatively you can try either turning your normal monitor off or lowering your main monitors resolution till you can run it at 75hz instead of 60hz.
Make sure that in your game settings that the refresh rate is 75hz rather than 60hz.

I have a 144hz monitor, should i set my monitor in nvidea control panel to 75hz to accomodate the DK2 ?

thanks in advance for any replies.

In theory no.
The issue with having a 60hz monitor and the DK2 at 75hz is that in some cases Vsync defaults to 60 rather than 75 so you end up running the game at 60fps rather than 75fps. This means you'll get juddery gameplay even though you could run the game at 75fps+
You resolve this by either only having the DK2 connected (1 display at 75hz) or lower the resolution of your other screen(s) (all displays at 75hz)

I am runing in Extended Mode.

The FPS cant be the problem, at BETA 1 everthing works fine with exact the same setup.

Im going to give a friend in work my DK1 to use in Elite D.

Before I do, does anyone know if the DK1 still works? And can he use the latest driver with it? All straight forward to set up?

Thanks!

Just to confirm, my DK1 works still even with the update, in fact... its x100 better!
I'm officially BLOWN away!!! :eek::eek::eek:
MUCH better performance!
The game looks MUCH better! in general, not just on the rift.
Frontier know there SH*T!
when they said there are big improvements coming they were not kidding around.
10/10 for the team! amazing, in my eyes your re-writing history of gaming!

Anyways, yes DK1 works better, all on max settings using my GTX670...
Slight micro stutters in stations, but more than acceptable.

All Hail Frontier !!!!

At the very least check it so you know for sure that it isn't an issue.

Simplest way to check is play the game, Press CTRL + F, remove the left lens and look at the top left of the screen to see the FPS.

There is no point doing anything else until you can be sure what the FPS is when you see judder. If it's less than 75fps then that is the issue.
If it never goes above 60 then the issue is either refresh rate or vsync related.

If you can come back with what your FPS I'll help you more.
