Ship Builds & Load Outs Imperial Clipper What do you use your Imp Clipper for?

Like Northpin suggested, I use mine for core mining. My loadout is pretty similar to the one he posted, main differences are I've downsized to a 5A plant, run a 6A fuel scoop, a 4A refinery, and the C2 slot has an FSD booster in it. Only 128t (+10 for the refinery hoppers) but I tend to find I'm running low on seismics by the time I fill that space up anyway, and that extra jump range and 18 second scoop time make the trip to a good sell system (or an out-of-bubble hotspot) a breeze.

Isn't a 6a fuel scoop a bit of a waste of space? I mean, it's not a scooping race and 4a should do just fine for the occasional scooping along the way.
At least for me, since i do all my mining in the bubble - never felt the need to mine 1000ly out of the bubble 🤷‍♂️

Sure it takes space, but I'd have a hard time filling it without synthing extra charges or bringing another launcher or something and having to fit it on one of the large hardpoints, which is firmly in the league of "sod that for a game of soldiers". I tried using other mining tools on the other hardpoints and wew.

Especially since missile-type weapons no longer adjust the position of their reticle to offset for hardpoint placement the way other fixed weapons do. I don't know whose decision that was but it's been the case since 3.3.

I'm using mine for PVE LTD piracy - and it's doing well enough.
Lazors for shields, missiles for disabling modules.
Can't shake the feeling a Python or Krait would be better though.

I flew my Clipper for a couple of years, only occasionally switching to my Asp X for extra-long jaunts. (Testing out a Krait Mk II at moment though)

I just love the handling, the sound, the looks and the speed. Whatever it taught me, I find docking my recently acquired Cutter at near-max speed a breeze, and there's nothing like Clipper-boosting through rings looking for core to mine.

As a PvE multirole which you switch around depending on the next job, it's just a fun ship to fly. If you beef it up PvP style, (MRPs, HRPs etc) it works as a PvE combat ship. And it always attracts comments in far-flung places where everyone else is in their Asp X or Annie. And did I mention the sound? 😍

PS I guess you've already seen the news that there's now shipkit & paintjobs for this ship. Finally. If you like them sorts of things
PPS Specifically, my core mining Clipper funded my A rated Cutter & my A rated Krait MkII. Before core mining was a thing, it was my "Unknown Mysteries" and Guardian sites runabout, and my materials-gathering engineering boat. But it was never a contender to fight the invading Thargoids. Unfortunately.

From my comparisons the Clipper's speed is king against a python pirate ship, but if all modules equal or equivalent the Python ends up with about 968mj of Shields with 128T Cargo, as the Clipper suffers with 744MJ Shielding and 84T Cargo. You could switch the Cargo around to have the Clipper Shielding 628MJ and Cargo 148T which may be better.
In the end a Clipper vs PVE LTD the speed of 481m/s would be quite handy for runners.
Originally i designed my Python pirate as a shield tanker style but changes to piracy have made that a bit obsolete. But the raider ship kit really sells the role.

Never needed any other ship, I made the triple Elite trading exploring and fighting with my Clipper and only my Clipper

I own two Imperial Clippers. One is dedicated for deep core mining / trade. 192 Cargo space, 606 m/s boost speed. Decent and safe ship.

The other one is my favorite ship - melee boss https://s.orbis.zone/4mhx I primarily use her to hunt other cmdr's in power play and assassinations. Very successful so far. Agile, very fast, hard hitting close combat attacks, devastating ramming attacks. In action - no pips to weapons section:)
Generally ppl complain about Clipper hardpoint convergence, but those mounts aren't for pulse lasers and multis, those are for frag cannons. And trust me - four frags in such configuration wreck everything that is close and whilst flying a Clipper you can get up close and personal. Thank you.

I'm not going to lie, that is pretty damn impressive accomplished all in one ship and not having the urge to use another. even for the simple change of scenery.
For practically living in one ship through three elite ranks you should get a special ship kit that gives you the modified look. Missing hull plates, replacement thruster casing, coffee stains on the dashboard. A kit that makes your Clipper really looked lived in.

Good gravy 5,013 Hull and 208.1 IOverall SDPS and 606m/s boost your clipper is the weapon. All that hull reinforcements give me a mental picture of walking through the interior of your ship. Open the back door from the cockpit and see nothing but reinforcements. "where is the restroom?" - removed it, needed more structural integrity.

I own every Imperial ship and many other brands and have this desire to find the right job for the Imperial Clipper but keep encountering design issues.
I keep running into a few problems when trying to decide on what role to put my Clipper in.

Trade: It is a large ship, so this excludes it from being a good cargo running ship for small stations that only support medium and small landing pads. Compared to the Cutter or Type 9 & 10 cargo space the Clipper feels lacking.
Combat: The size 6 Power Distributor and Power Plant give me troubles when outfit for combat, They feel under powered for a large ship compared to others in the same weight class. The Federal Assault ship seems to have nearly identical core internals and its a Medium size and only has to worry about a size 4 optional internal.
Exploration: I could reasonably get her to push a jump range of around 50-53ly which is impressive for a large ship, but the Anaconda obviously makes this an odd choice for this role. And many other medium ships fair better in this aspect.

My impression of the Clipper is that she should have been a medium class ship as her stats seem to be on par with others of that size.
So my question is as the title implies. What role do you use your Imperial Clipper for?

Core mining.

Unlike traditional mining, something quick with a moderate amount of cargo capacity is ideal for core work. The Clipper has plenty of cargo space, and plenty of speed for getting away from danger, or finding that next rock. It’s affordable too, compared to some other ships you might mine with. Only a fraction of the cost of a Python or Krait.

Hell of a pirate ship for the same reason, too. Big size 7 slot for cargo, and enough space for all the gadgets. Speed to run down any ship, or run away from system security.

Not my first choice for PvP combat, but PvP piracy? It’s a great choice.

I'm similar. I build mine for piracy, but I mostly use it when BGS calls for piracy missions and those a pain.
Big beams for shields, Pack-Hounds for modules and Grom Bombs too. The last one are not that useful, but I'll keep them on for practice.
I suspect a Phantom could do the job equally well and be able to land on Outposts, albeit with loss of some cargo capacity.

Intended secondary use was PVP blockade running, but I've only done that once. It performed well, though. First player interdiction I managed to evade without slamming into a planet. I also outmaneuvered another guy who tried to get behind me in supercruise.

Good to hear. I've just got seekers, but modded with drag munitions to slow the runners. Not that I can't catch them, but to make scooping their cargo easier once their drives are disabled. I took focused burst lasers for shields - but also precision removal of PDs.

I have found that being set up for PVE piracy means that I am not interested in fighting enemy pirates - I don't want to waste the missiles. The Clipper's speed means I can submit and boost away without worrying about it too much.

My next grind will be for Packhounds. :)

Yeah, Pack-Hounds are great in this line of work. Very good surface module damage. Even one launcher can overwhelm PD and take it out. Makes me wonder how Sirius Gov handles its business. I should probably use zappier lasers for some more utility too, but I just like how the beams look. And the drag effect to slow down drifters, I didn't think of that.

I use my Clipper for material gathering only these days. It still has the best flight characteristics in my books, both in supercruise and normal space. It's the best ship to fly in, but good at nothing else.
