[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

The more clever among us just do something else when something isn't working and we can do nothing about it. We don't stand, mewling about the problem, complaining loudly so that everyone knows how extremely slightly inconvenienced we are. There are those of us who can understand that not everything will be perfect and we don't always get what we want and we can approach these slight issues with a little maturity.

You should try it.

That's a pretty interesting comment, considering:

A) You're mewing about other people mewing
B) You add (again) nothing to the conversation at hand and instead complain about other members of the community.
C) You're (again) diverted the conversation from the intended topic at hand.

If you're just here to pick people apart, maybe just go play the game you love so much and let folks have a say without the ad hominem and straw man arguments you seem to typically bring up.

... this is so wrong on so many levels that if you really don't care then ... i will neither, and any problems you experience in the game are well deserved. i'll keep it mind however when considering where to spend my money next ... if any half decent software manufacturer is still around, that is ...
I love this delusion that whining about bugs means something. You really said that not howling into the forums means you deserve bugs, which I guess explains why you think you're too good for them; after all, you've done the requisite complaining, you don't deserve any issues! Flawless logic!

Also... why are you... posting like... that kid from Malcolm in the Middle?

Although I guess that's appropriate, based on your reaction to minor inconveniences.

If irony was void opals I could outfit a Corvette with this post.

whatever, buddy. take care.

This is borderline trolling. Yes, I've seen a few of these people come and go, but most people who are frustrated with the game only want to see their frustrations addressed and fixed. They get no joy from their current misery, rather they want to be happy with the game. I wanted to be happy with shadows, and now I am! But I still feel empathy for those who suffer from very bad shadows (and now screen tearing) on the consoles.

That's your problem - you lack empathy.

If people spend their time, years after removing a computer game from their hard drive, publicly insulting everyone involved in it for being lazy, incompetent, liars and so forth my empathy is with the creative people, not the complainers. There is a difference between being unhappy about something and spending years personally attacking people over a game.

You may call that 'my problem' if you want, but I can assure you I have bigger ones. :p

i didn't hire the devs, i paid the company for a product, i expect professional manufacturing and service.
I bought a new car from the dealer, and a month later they broke my window in order to get in and update it with a new radio. Granted, the radio was free, but people who think I shouldn't be upset about the broken window are a bunch of fruit loops.

Let me know when FDEV break into your car.

I may have been mocking an apparently serious comparison between a real life crime and a video game with a minor bug in it just after a patch.
So, what you're saying is that a company breaking a product after selling it to you is a crime, and ergo Frontier has committed a crime by breaking their product with this patch (and every update before it). Why Stigbob, I never thought you'd cross over to the dark side. Calling Frontier a criminal organization? Wow! Somebody has hacked the Russian Bot!

Thankfully the Duck is unhackable, or I might lecture you about how software is not a product but a service we license instead of own. Wait, what just happened?

See people, THIS is why we need VPNs!!!

On a more serious note, you explicitly allow FD to modify their software, which you didn't buy and dont own, almost whenever they see fit any way they see fit. Unless you 'bought' your car on very peculiar terms the comparison is just silly.

Nope, what I'm saying is its just a video game if you feel offended against or violated or upset or angry or anything like that its time to pop outside and get some fresh air.

Maybe scroll through your steam catalogue when you get back in.

We discussed this extensive on Lave Radio on Tuesday, we even covered a lot of the issues before the petition came out in the previous episode.

We've decided that's up to each individual crew member to sign it if they want. Personally, I do agree with a lot of the points made, especially regarding communication regarding organising interviews etc and so on. There is a feeling that the game is being cut back (Galnet news reduced, community goals reduced and quite a while since the last Interstellar Initiative) that's adding to the general negative attitude a the moment.

I feel that the biggest issue is the long term bugs; the kind which locks off certain types of gameplay, like when fighting thargoids for example, which is causing the main concern. Yes, we knew that the updates coming we're going to be small, but there was hope that bug fixes would continue at the pace they'd been at in Beyond.

However, dispite the preamble, the petition does come across as far too aggressive and could even be considered threatening. As Shan pointed out, some players tried the same thing with Arena Net (and I've seen it with SOE as well) and Arena Net just shut down all communication apart from release notes and patches. I'm concerned that the same will happen now with frontier. Remember that everything went a lot quieter after all the salt over 2.3.

I personally won't sign the petition mostly because of the concerns I have with the security of that perticular website but I do agree with most of the points in the petition.

Great post!

It feels like Frontier took the community for granted and miscalculated the necessary content to keep huge player groups engaged. A two year "break" is a long time for online communities, especially when (almost) all we get in the meantime is a new tutorial and an overhaul for the MTX shop. So far this year we've had two IIs, I guess many players would have assumed this number to be higher too. And then there are also all these cut backs you already mentioned, Galnet, Thargoids, CGs,..

SagEye not doing monthly issues anymore (for now) is another clear sign of the content drought. I'm not a fan of threats or ultimatums, but I could understand community developers who said they don't feel supporting Elite is worth it anymore. These people also put a significant amount of dev time into the game, all in their free time. And their servers cost money as well.

I personally think the whole Elite experience would suffer considerably if Inara, EDDB, EDSM, EDMC, Coriolis, EDShipyard, Mining Tool, Neutron plotter, ... and many, many more would shut down their services. Of course the same goes for other community content like Lave Radio.

It looks like Frontier thought they should focus on acquiring new players and monetization until 2020, because those pillars of the community would still be here anyway in two years time.

The plethora of bugs in an ingame shop update was just the last rice corn that tipped the scales. I think many long time community members have seen this meltdown more or less coming for some weeks/months now. Simply blaming it all on entitled and toxic players would do the game a disservice in the long run in my opinion.

The bugs and "bad communication" the petition mentions are just the easy to find scapegoats, because it's hard to identify and put into words all the frustrations that have been piling up. Another huge mistake of the petition was adding the words "the community", because most of the discussion has now been about who speaks for whom, instead of addressing the real issues.

Of course the vagueness of the petition is also a problem for Frontier, because how are they supposed to respond, or what exactly are they supposed to do?

Overall the petition is more a loud, general cry of frustration. "Please Frontier, hear us! We are unhappy and concerned about the current state of the game." That sentiment is probably a bigger reason why so many people signed it, than the thought that a PTS would magically fix all of Elite's problems.

I'm sorry this post is all over the place, lacks structure and probably has a ton of grammar and spelling errors, but I kind of had to get this off my chest.
