[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

Have a look at this mod notification for a reality check on how polite it is :

Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/dbbxeb/community_requests_to_frontier_developments/f2010ev/

"I can't believe I have to even say this, but sending frontier employees personal attacks and death threats is super uncool and will get you an immediate ban from this community. Make your criticism as pointed and as loud as you want, but attack the problems you have, not the people."

And then there's this about the or else factor :

Now we've established polite simply doesn't apply to this can you explain what the petitions actually about as "balance" could mean pretty much anything.

Major bugs sounds like a character from Starship Troopers and is so imprecise its impossible to satisfy.

Also an impolite threatening demand for more communication is quite obviously self defeating.

I think if anything what you've probably achieved is a lot less communication from FDEV, and nobody sane would blame them.

I asked about the petition itself, nothing else.

Read his post history, you'll see what I mean. He's getting some ready even as I type this.

You are just sulking because you are hanging round the forum of a game you don't like anymore, you'll feel better if you try to get over the video game and move on.

But why a petition in the first place? That's the overly entitled bit. Why does a bunch of players think that by signing something that one or more of them dreamed up entitled them to any effect on the game we all play? Isn't it already plenty apparent that there are bugs and issues in the game, and doesn't the history of the game development so far show that FDEV is dealing with these bugs and time and resources allow?
No, it doesn't. Multicrew is still ed. Powerplay is still ed. It took 4 months to fix things like the mass lock bug and everything else broken in the December update. That's absolutely unacceptable.

And what makes you think that the community does not want change? I think most want change - the entire premise of the 10-year scope of the game is change. We get updates and patches, and once in a while a bigger DLC package. That's been in the game from the start.

Change is happening. If it is not at the pace and form that the petition gang want, well tough for them. I've wanted (and am getting) change, and have been happy overall so far. Only thing I actively haven't wanted is the form of change outlined in that petition.

The fact that people in this thread (like you) are getting upset that people dare send FDev a petition to get them to improve their QA Process!

You can't think of even a single counterargument eh ?. Thought not.

You failed to offer even a single substantiative argument. There aren't any major bugs? Have you even touched Multicrew since it launched? I'll ask again. What words in the petition itself, the letter on ipetitions.com, is impolite or threatening? Just because people had a thought to try a more offensive protest doesn't mean that this one is. As for balance, heal beams are still ridiculously overpowered. Their fixes have been to keep people from using them for station griefing. That's just 1 example. How many useless weapons are there? You got any cannons fit to your ships right now?

Here's the three specific criticisms (again) of the wording of the petition that you missed or ignored in my previous post :

"balance" could mean pretty much anything.

Major bugs sounds like a character from Starship Troopers and is so imprecise its impossible to satisfy.

Also an impolite threatening demand for more communication is quite obviously self defeating.

Also cannons are great always been one of my favourite weapons.

Then frankly your arguments are nonsense. You still havent shown me what on the petition is impolite. Just because some people on reddit are jerks doesn't taint everything everyone else does. That's like calling all of Christianity bad because some priests are criminals.

No, it doesn't. Multicrew is still gently caressed. Powerplay is still gently caressed. It took 4 months to fix things like the mass lock bug and everything else broken in the December update. That's absolutely unacceptable.

So those outstanding issues negates everything else FDEV have fixed over the years? Seems like cherry picking to me.

The fact that people in this thread (like you) are getting upset that people dare send FDev a petition to get them to improve their QA Process!

You can send a petition, flowers, toilet rolls, billboards, hamsters, ..., and it will not represent me nor my opinions of the game and the bug testing of it. My gripe is with the petition and the people behind it thinking they somehow represent the community that I am also part of.

That's mixing concepts. Keep it simple please. Is this about the wording and intent of the petition, or is it about specifics of the game mechanics you are dissatisfied with. One thing at a time, please.

:D S

Death threats are bad m'kay.

Read this next time you are wondering why the devs don't want to touch us with a ten foot stick :

You're not endearing yourself, you know?!

As a Brit (specifically, a proud Jock from Edinburgh who grew up in Harrow) & the owner of a 2015 Jaguar XF 3.0D V6 Portfolio, I can tell you that in over 3 years I've never had even one major issue & only a couple of very minor ones. I wish I could say the same about my previous car, a BMW 330D Coupe - a manufacturer, supposedly with one of the best reputations for build quality in the industry - at less than 2 years old, conked out with a serious engine management issue on the A3 approaching the South Circular in London <ahem> at morning rush hour...I won't forget that day in a hurry or the fruity Chaucerian vernacular I learnt either from the legendarily patient, empathetic & amiable Londoners.

What's this thread about again?
You probably didn't have to maintain one in the 60's, 70's, or early 80's.

Actually, I am curious. Here is the petition: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/community-requests-to-fdev-for-elite-dangerous What about it, precisely, is not sufficiently clear and polite? Include specific passages and how you would change or word them.
For me, it's not sufficient clear what is meant by 'Fix the long standing issues'.

After several discussions in this thread it turned out it means:

  • make the BGS open only (something lots of people in the community disagree with)
  • make PP open only (something lots of people in the community disagree with)
  • fix PP (with people having different ideas how it should get fixed)
  • remove the FSS and restore the old exploration gameplay (again, lots of people disagree with this)
  • add offline mode (ok, I just made that up)
  • remove the ability to duplicate materials by mode switching (surprisingly this is something I agree with, considering how many people complained about the mission board fix it's another controversial topic though)

For me it's problematic that the petition looks like many people would be in agreement, but if you take a closer look lots of people wouldn't survive sitting in the same room for more than 30 minutes.

Yeah, so that's why we're using a politely worded petition. Your other arguments are bad, "Fewer bugs" and "better game balance" are perfectly clear and reasonable requests.

TLDR : death by committee.
