The case of small mammals as exhibit animals - Frontier, maybe you could reconsider your stance?

Hello everyone,

in this thread, I will try to make a stand for small mammals (and partly small birds as well) representation in Planet Zoo, summarise it's pros and cons. And maybe make Frontier shift from its stance that adding small mammals and birds as exhibit animals isn't going to happen.

First a little bit of info about me: Three years ago, I started to fulfill my childhood dream of being a zookeeper. So far only on a part-time or volunteer basis, but after I finish university in June, I'm going to switch on a full-time contract. My primary focus and biggest interests are small mammals and marsupials. And like everyone else, I would like to see some of "my" species in the game. However, the obvious problem with them is that they are just too small to be featured as habitat animals. Thus, adding them as exhibit animals seems like a no-brainer, but Frontier previously said, that having small mammals and birds as exhibit animals isn't likely. Buuuut....

• Even though the species diversity is already incredibly high, adding some of these species would send the game on a new level, having species never represented in a game before (and some of those are rarities in real zoos as well)

• Most of them when it comes to size similarly big as species we already have in game so they can be housed in the same-size terrarium as well, as they are housed this way in captivity.

• Some of the species have the potential to become really big community favorites given how good job Frontier does with animations. I mean look at some of those...

Lovely right?

Now, to balance it, obviously, there are some cons too...

• Even though they can inhabit the current size of exhibits we have, for some species it wouldn't be really adequate. This could be solved (and I'm borrowing this idea from different discussions) by having different sizes of exhibits (like small, medium, large).

• Contrary to reptiles and inverts, some of the small mammal species are more active thus current system with three predetermined positions animal switches off-screen wouldn't be satisfying enough. But it's not that big of an issue and I wouldn't mind that much about it.

• Problem with inadequately-sized exhibits could be solved also by adding new exhibit item - aviary. Aviaries were discussed here many times as well and I feel, that having something like this as an exhibit item would be really lovely and it would allow us to have some of the smaller mammals, passerine birds, hummingbirds, and other small gems who are being kept in these types of exhibits.

So this is my view, maybe there is more of us who likes these little critters and who knows...maybe we will actually be surprised by Frontier in future ;)

Bonus pic: Me during my keeper duties with my most favorite species, who is surprisingly not a small mammal. 😅 Meet Babirusas ☺

I really like the Kowari and the Chinese giant flying Squirrel.

I think the Chinese giant flying Squirrel could be big enough for a normal Enclosure

This was confirmed by Frontier?

I really would love small mammals (and birds), too! <3 They are always one of my favorites when I go to a zoo and it would be realistic, because many zoos have houses for small animals or at least some enclosures all over the zoo!

A few animals that came to mind:

Tarsiers-tiny primates with BIG eyes.
Grasshopper mice-crazy carnivorous rodents who shrieks in the night.
Slow Loris: He's got a nasty armpit. Bite 'im, and you're a goner...
Hummingbirds-hovercrafts with a taste for nectar.

What do you think?

It was always mentioned whenever this matter was discussed before, but I never found the exact statement, maybe in of theirs AMA's?

Nah, these are users saying stuff. Never seen such comment from Frontier. And I'm sure they don't want to rule them out already at this stage of the game (just before release).

I would love Slow Loris😍

I not sure about the tarsiers because of the way they work/don't work in captivity outside of their native range.

Well let's hope we hear good news in the future.

I'd add Platypus, Hopping Mouse, Naked Mole Rats, Kiwis and several more to that list - They'd need larger enclosures though, but I think that's be a good idea anyway.

I mean there are tons of species I could write on that list but I just wanted to make it short so people can have idea what I mean by this. So far I worked with like 50-60 different species of small mammals (maybe more this is just quick estimate) and pretty much all could be on the list 😅

Platypus and Kiwis I see as habitat animals if they'll be added in the future (and I see them as big candidates) as they would need massively sized exhibit to be satisfied.

Naked mole rats would be amazing though :)

What about the birds?

Now that I think about it, putting hummingbirds in those vivariums is like putting sharks in a box-shaped tank-it spells disaster! Hummingbirds would bump themselves to the walls and get seriously injured.

Birds of paradise, starlings, and other small tree-dwelling birds wouldn't seem like a bad option. Even chicken could be added.

Why use the exhibit?
You can place a building with 4 walls and a roof as large as you want it to be.
Scenery and Construction objects already have animal collision detection on them so no animal can escape.

What about the birds?

That's why I included the aviary options although I've seen many birds being housed in glass exhibits, even hummingbirds

Here are some examples:

Walsrode (Germany)

And if Frontier would made current exhibit just slightly bigger, they will be good enough for some small passerine bird, or some ground dwelling species like quails.

I found the exact statement here.

"Our Exhibit animals consist of a varied roster of reptiles and creepy crawlers (many of which we've not yet announced)! " - Bo

As someone who's datamined Planet Zoo, I can at the very least confirm what she mentioned in the brackets.
