ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Well i have updated to the 2.01 patch and this has made matters worse for me!

When I go to graphics options and set up my Oculus Rift, the screen goes black.

Anyone else having this issue?

The DK2 works fine for me on 2.01. However:

  • Online mode doesn't work (both open play and solo). In the loading screen the spinning orange ship and the text both disappear and the game locks there. Music keeps playing, but after 10 minutes of wait I gave up and killed the process.
  • Game still freezes when going back to the main menu (after completing a training scenario, for example).

So the Rift is working okay for you on 2.01 in extended mode?

I cannot even set the Rift up without getting a black screen!

Only in extended mode. Let me give it a try in direct mode...

Edit: I also just realized I was playing with the OVRServer process stopped...

Well thats further than I can get...

hmmm... I'll try stopping OVR, see if that makes a difference.

Confirmed: Direct mode doesn't work for me. Tried both with the service running and paused. Positional tracking works in both cases, but it only outputs to the screen.

So have you got the rift set as your second monitor? And in the config utility it's set to extended display? And when you load Elite on your monitor, then select secondary display, and under vr mode select oculus rift with headphones and that's how you do it. Are you doing any of those things differently?

Note I'm on an older AMD cpu so on previous versions I had to unplug the camera on my DK2 to get it working.

Yes.

As I said- the oculus is correctly configured.

The only thing i`m not using is headphones connected to oculus as i`m using surround system instead.

Oculus is working fine with all the demos and cineveo, though not working with Elite.

I think many of the issues people are encountering are not Oculus specific. Im seeing people without rifts reporting the same problems:

- black loading screen
- open play/solo hanging, crashing or not working at all

They have said that Direct to Rift for Elite still isn't setup for Beta 2, you should still be working with extended mode.

Side note, I know the manual of the DK2 says you don't need to plug in the A/C adaptor to use the Rift. But I was experience really bad tracking in Elite when not having it plugged in. Keep this in mind when trying to troubleshoot your issues.

Users must have the Oculus 4.2 SDK installed on their machine
'Rift Display Mode’ should be set to ‘Extended desktop to the HMD’
Make sure OVR Server is running
So long as you can tick these boxes then your Oculus Rift DK2 should be working fine on Beta 2.0.

My problem was that the 3D Seperation Mode had defaulted to OFF. Had forgotten all about that setting since I normally have it permanent set!

Is anyone else feeling a bit queezy (or a little eye strain) after 10 minutes or so? I could spend hours in Beta 1 but there is something not quite right with Beta 2. I can see a shimmer/ghosting effect when you move your head. Most noticeable if you look at displays or the starport wording in front of you when docked. As you turn your head you get a ghosting effect. It is this I believe that is causing the odd feeling after a while. Don't quite feel sick but more eye strain. Never felt like that in the previous version.

Try landing at some of the new outposts coming in virtually upside down the doing a quick flip .........
It's the same in a station where you have to make a quick flip to land on a pad next to the slot.

This wouldn't be nearly so nauseating if they'd let us turn the head bob off when accelerating/decelerating.

Beta 2.01 change log is as follows:

- Ensure in-system map is properly cleaned up if interrupted
- Fix incorrect commander ID sent to the server when scanning celestial bodies
- Fixed div by zero in time to destination
- Reduce server's MTU, and turn on detailed network logging
- Do not deadlock if we hit “Fail to add resend” error
- Make faction sides in war zones the correct way round
- When spawning ambient traffic around a station and choosing a random minor faction, don't choose a faction in a war state, unless it's the faction that is the controlling minor faction. Should stop there being so much fighting around stations
- Mission util flag and text fixes
- Repair all button isn't selectable fixed
- Increased the possible string length for titles in the missions panel pop up (in cockpit)
- Range-check input binding values when asked to display as text
- Fixed lighting transition in supercruise
- Fixed galaxy background capture
- Handle missing text symbols for input bindings
- Remove the 'security system' data from the galaxy map, until we're pulling the correct data
- System set up tweaks for Dahan and Rakapila
