Smoke effects turning with head movement...

Okay, so I'm overheating during a scoop run and am reminded of this issue so I go to post it on the issues tracker, quick search first to make sure I'm not posting a duplicate and lo'! I find somebody has posted it and it has been marked as invalid with the following response:

STATUS INVALID
This is not a bug as it is sadly an unfortunate side effect of the particle system. We wish there was something that we could do about this and if we ever find a solution we will come back to it.

Ermmm.... no FD, it's a bug you introduced this year, it was fine before the FSS update whichever that was.

Ermmm.... no Mr Grimes... sorry Commander; this has always been a thing....(Edit: Bug, Fixed, Broke again, Fixed again and so on) even now on sun flares/corona if you catch the prominence's ''sideways'' as it were, you can see the ''plane'' turning as you move your viewpoint. It is down to the naff particle system used to optimize overall ''performance''. o7

The sun corona has always done this yes, the cockpit smoke has most definitely(edit:maybe...? sigh) not.

Okay, now thinking I'm going crazy, are you guys positive? Maybe I'm imagining the whole thing, it's very possible... I'd have happily put money on it having not been the case with cockpit overheat smoke effects but now the doubt is in my mind and that I might be fooling myself... again lol... darnit!!!

I noticed it first when I figured out how to move the headlook around in the cockpit. But I didn't use that mode much early on. It became especially an eyesore when I went VR last year.

Here's a counter-proposal. Our cockpits should not start smoking until after our ship starts taking heat damage from overheating, not at 80%. If smoke starts pouring out of my car's dashboard, then my car is taking DAMAGE. It doesn't smoke just because it's hot (like when it sits in the sun all day).

My proposal solves your problem and my broken immersion :D

And now I've just found this post in an earlier thread about it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...like-to-roll-with-you-too.384673/post-6038856

Which makes me think I am correct and that the overheat smoke didn't used to rotate like everything else. arghhhh... you know this is going to bug me now right? lmao...

Huh. Could have been intermittent. Here's an old bug report about it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...ffects-rotate-roll-with-head-movement.253809/.

You are correct, cockpit smoke at one glorious stage was fixed for head rotation though not for turning.

It broke again after one of the later updates. I know this because it bugged the stuffing out of me once it started doing it again. Fingers crossed that rotation gets fixed - I’m hoping the bug report was marked as “invalid” due to sprite turning being a required thing. Maybe it’ll be worth submitting a “rotation only” bug report for VR? I think the sprite rotation is a much more noticeable thing than sprite turning.

Hi
I've VR since DK2
I can confirm smoke has always rolled, even overheat smoke. The fix must have been very brief bc I can't remember it. But then again, I don't remember much nowadays! What are we talking about again??

The timeframe for the fix wasn’t very long if I recall correctly, it may even have been fixed in an early Beta and broke in a later one.

Looking at when I purchased my CV1, it must’ve been one of the 3.x series of updates or possibly 2.4, so late 2017 / early 2018.

I noticed lately on mine that solar flares had stopped rotating with moving my head but I don't know if it started again. Will check later. Regardless, clearly it has been demonstrated to be 'fixable'.

I did cringe at the 'it is sadly an unfortunate side effect of the particle system' comment. I note that they don't say 'our particle system' from 'our rendering engine' i.e. yes it's broken, no we won't take responsibility for it ergo we won't call it a bug. By this rationale I could sell cars without sun visors and call it an unfortunate side effect of my design system. You'll only notice after you buy the car and you're not going to return the car so I don't care because I'm busy writing the code for proper landing on planets... oh wait :sneaky:

There are other ways we could fix this

Yay! I'm not alone :D

PS, Old Duck, yes that was me last night but I was having lag issues lol...
