Purchasing ED question

previously I've own a ps4 and an xbox and copies of ED Cmdr's version for both. Recently bought a pc and because I didn't know better, purchased ED's cmdr version through Steam. Next year Frontier states there will be a new package and it will have a price tag. My question is:

Do I or am I mandated to having purchase the new version from Steam or can I purchase it from Frontier. Prior to April 25th this year one could purchase from steam but utilize Frontier's launcher, but that was nerfed and no longer possible. I'm assuming that the new frontier's digital copy of the new package would require a launcher and if so, how would that work along side of the steam launcher which I am mandated to utilize.

I assume the next paid dlc / season will be just like Horizons (the last one) so it is just a level of access from the launcher. In other words, like your (post April 25th) Horizons, you will be required to access it via your steam account.

(Might be a good reason to keep an eye out for a Frontier Store sale event for Commander DeLuxe Edition - giving you another account but outside outside Steam and only buying the next update for that account?)

The cost is of no concern to me, however, I've been informed that purchasing a cmdr's package from Frontier, downloading in and then installing it would require a complete restart and thus I would have to start at the beginning again. I have issue's with Steam and would prefer to purchase it from Frontier. I'm just not sure that if I purchase it from Frontier rather than Steam, would I still have access to the rest of the game.
Presently via the steam launcher, I must choose either ED or the Horizon. Choosing ED eliminates anything and everything the Horizon packages offer's. Choosing Horizon allows me to play the entire game which includes anything and everything the horizon pack offers.

Are you saying that if I were to purchase the new package via Frontier that I could still access the rest of the game. OR will I be forced to purchase it through steam.

I'd recommend filing a support ticket. Hopefully Frontier can transfer your in-game assets across from your Steam Commander to your non Steam Commander (Frontier Store purchase). Live long and Elite!

............

It would be a completely separate account / commander. So the Commander DeLuxe Edition has the base game plus Horizons plus some repaints therefore you could access all of the game but with a completely different commander however no assets / in-game purchases can be transferred from your current Steam account to a new non-Steam one. You could then purchase the forthcoming new dlc for that account from the store and leave your Steam account with its existing level of access.

Frontier will not transfer your save from your Steam account to a new store-bought account (as it is one post the April changes). They will transfer the credit balance from a console version, but only the credits, no assets or progress.

(That doesn't read very clearly - sorry - I need more coffee. ;) )

Why? Wouldn't this be trivial?

I don't know what you really mean - trivial for the commander or trivial for Frontier?

Yes the credits would not be worth losing your console progress for in my opinion - so the credits would indeed be trivial.

Frontier not transferring progress or assets - I don't know if that would be a trivial matter to them - probably - but their reasons for this are not known to me.

If you mean as regards the Steam version - I assume it would break their marketing agreement. Although, saying that, they won't transfer between non-Steam versions either so maybe it is just a policy decision.

So basically similar to my transfer from ps4 to xbox in which I received my assets but lost progress and is only allowed once. Switching from steam to frontier would be the same in as much as I'd get to keep assest but loose progress, because it's from pc to pc. Thus not a total loss but a loss never the less. Progress is considerably harder to obtain than assets.

what exactly is the problem with the steam version of the game, ok so you have to login through steam whats so bad about that? I am obviously missing something sorry to be a pain?

I think you misunderstand. As far as I am aware Frontier will not allow transfer of progress, assets or credits between non-console versions. You can ask them if they will but don't be surprised if they won't.

OK, if I am understanding you correctly, because I got involved with steam after april 25. If I buy from Frontier, it's a total wipe; No progress nor assets will transfer!
That's a bummer, one would think because data is stored at both my pc and Frontier. Switching from steam to Frontier or visa versa would be ok. Oh well, looks like when the new update or package or what ever it referred to as is available via Frontier. I'll be starting brand new again, but it will be for the last time. Thanks for all you input.

I'm in a location in Mexico that though it now has internet service, it's slightly better than dial up service. Don't know if your old enough to have ever experience or know of what use to be called "Party Line" phone connections. But my internet connection up and download are based on how many of the 12 accounts mine included, in my barrio that are on line at the same time.

Our connection is ever so slightly better than what use to be called "Dial Up". Even if no one else is utilizing the internet while I am, my download speed averages only 500kbs which is kilo bits not kilo bytes. My upload is at best 50kbs. Thus when someone wants a screen shot, I can't oblige them. It would take the better part of 24 hours IF I could maintain connection that long.

Presently I have to deal with the phone companies server's, Steam server's and Frontier's server's. Eliminating Steam means one less connection thus a bit faster ping rate.
I'll not bother you with what I think of their web site. But to me it would seem that because they are dealing with so many venues, their site is totally confusing. Not to mention all the constant supposed updates which for me my internet speed which is slower than molasses in a Minnesota January is one two many.

Other that that, no problems. LOL

the way I thought it works is steam only auto boots and logs in to the launcher frontier aws servers in Ireland the same as just the standard launcher
its not as if steam host the game they don't (sympathys on connection some broadband users have trouble in elite when amazon web services this game is hosted on is having a bad day)
