The Challenger - The Pilot

I had some thoughts with it as a multicrew AX ship. A second commander in the gunner role could run 3 class 2 flak turrets to deal with thargons and a rack of plasma charger turrets on top (that's what I enjoyed) to whack the interceptors...

Maybe, but I don't spend my time scouring YouTube or channels. These are the Elite forums, a great place for people to look for things Elite.
I'm pretty much with you on 'content providers' & 'influencers' on youtube and will happily shun their content...

The first of The Pilot's video's I watched was my downfall... Top Gear in Space is a pretty good description, great music, astonishing camera work, droll humour... I may not always agree with his summation, but have never came away from his work feeling sullied or dirty...

Only problem I have with him is that he forces me to go buy other ships, just to see if he is telling the truth... 🐀

My Challenger is built to solo wing assassination missions. Frags plus cytos in the small slots. Lots of fun shredding a Corvette at point blank and jump out again a minute later, leaving its mates nonplussed.

Challenger is a good mining ship. Nimble with good view out and excellent hard point placement for the mining tools. Remove the restrictions on one or more of the military slots and it would be a great mining ship.

"Will it blend?"
hahahahahahahaha…I remember those videos...I was hoping you were going to throw a 3D printed model into a blender...but no :D

For me Challenger is the perfect combat ship, with a hint of multi-purpose in it. While it's not the fastest and doesn't have the biggest shield, it has a very nice combination of attributes like:
  • Great firepower, 7 hardpoints is a lot on medium ship
  • Decent jump range (for a combat ship)
  • Good turn rate and acceleration
  • Can fit a reasonably sized cargo rack for mission running, or big fuel scoop for fast travel (while still being a good combat ship)
  • Reasonable outfitting cost (compared to class 7 modules on Krait / Phantom)

I generally like these videos. But i think this one is not doing the Challenger justice. It's a nice mid-class combat ship, very similar to the Chieftain. I personally slightly prefer the Challenger. As it allows me a configuration the Chieftain just can't carry. So it's very much a matter of taste, which weapon configuration you prefer.

Well, that's the thing. On it's own, it's a perfectly reasonable mid-range combat ship. It's not bad per se, I just don't really have a use for it. And frankly, neither do you it looks like.

You really do have to look at it from on a broader spectrum. On it's own, it's fine. But compared to everything else on the board, there's just not a reason to fly it outside of curiosity, or wanting to be different.

I think people should look at ships without comparing them to other ones, thats when you realize that there are only a couple actually bad ships, and everyone likes to exaggerate

Uh. yea. It seems like that. But only because i somehow messed up the ship names when re-organizing my posting. My actual preference is the Challenger. I don't know how the Crusader remained in my posting. That ship actually is terrible. (I cut out that passage as it was too off topic, and somehow the name stayed... shame on me. )

So after the correction, it still cuts down to Chieftain or Challenger. They indeed are very similar ships. But i like the Challengers weapon layout more, due to a bit more versatility. Yet it's very much a matter of taste, the difference between the two ships is not huge.
