Newcomer / Intro What to do next or maybe just hang on?

Hi All,

Brand new Cmdr here. Been reading and watching Guides until i want to pull whats left of my hair out......which would be a trick. I have avoided all the "Get Rich Quick" vids and advice as I enjoy the slow build up and the joy of finally making cash and upgrading.

So I am still hanging out in the starter area and staring to feel Cabin Fever. So the question I have is "What next"?
  • Should I move out and find a new home?
  • Should I stay put and make a bit more cash?
  • Should I head out buy upgrades and then come back?
My details:
  • Playing Co-Op
  • Currently around Eravate
  • Want to Join the Alliance
  • Flying an Adder set up for Mining
  • Loving Mining
  • Want to Mine
  • Want to Upgrade and find a new home
  • Need to find a Station to buy new Modules

It sounds as if you're ready to go outside and play with the big children.

If you want to play in open, it might cause a few rebuy screens, but remember that it's very easy to switch from open to solo even in the middle of something. Also never fly without a rebuy!

Mining is, like most other things in the game, great fun, but there are many other fun roles as well. Personally I was too eager to get the big ships, and grinded to get those. Now I mostly fly small and medium ships. I started out doing passenger missions, next did exploring and then went to mining. At one point it started annoying me that pirates were after my goods, and I was afraid of them. Therefore I started doing some self defense practice in a Resource Extraction Site (RES) and soon found out that fighting was fun and that it wasn't as difficult as the training missions, if only you did a few upgrades to the ship.

If you "head" out, I pretty sure there is no way back, but especially in solo, it's generally a friendly galaxy outside the starter zone. You will go there sooner or later and it's out there that you find all the good stuff. Good luck! :)

If you want good tutorial videos, I can highly recommend D2EA:

You don't need to stay in starting zone to make cash. Also note that if you head out of the zone and dock in any station, you can never return.

I stayed I the zone until I felt comfortable in my ability to dock (manually) and fly decently with flight assist off in combat. To my knowledge there's no reason to stay in the zone for money. You can't properly explore in the starting zone as you can't get a detailed surface scanner.

For ReBuy do you just have to have the cash available? I ahve been trying to find an "Insurance" tab to buy the rebuy but couldn't find it and am starting to think I am over thinking it.

The rebuy kicks in when you get blown up. You don't need to put money into it other than have the cash available - if you do get blown up, check the "rebuy screen" carefully to ensure you get your current ship back (plus it's upgraded, if any, modules). You will be given a new Sidewinder (call a Freewinder by some) if you select the wrong option although, IIRC, it defaults to rebuying your current boat these days.

Personally, I think I would move on from the starter area and find a system to call home: a station close-ish to a star with good links to other systems. From there, I would try and ally yourself with all factions in your new "home" system so mission rewards get greater.

And... welcome!

Okay, an idea of what you could do.
Depending on how much money you have, buy a fuel scoop and venture out. Find a high population High-tech system and either sell the mining equipment and buy D-rated internals for your Adder, or buy a Hauler, D-rate everything and buy the best FSD you can afford plus a fuel scoop and detailed surface scanner.
The go on an exploration trip around the bubble in a hunt for ringed planets. Scan what you can and look for rings with pristine reserves. The longer it takes to find the planet you like to mine at, the more money you're going to earn, so it's kind of a win-win.
Dock somewhere every now and then and sell your exploration data. To keep track of how much money you've earned and more importantly because the exploration data are lost when you die, so if you do, it's best to only lose a couple hours of work rather than a couple days.
Bookmark all planets that look interesting for mining and once you've had enough, it's possible that you're going to have not only a map dotted with possible mining sites, but also a good couple million credits for a new mining ship from all the scanning.
Buy and equip a new mining ship (or return for your Adder) and you can start blasting. :)

Not sure if you've mentioned the type of mining you are doing. If you're mining just with lasers, you can also try abrasion blasters or even core mining.

What I'm trying to say is - don't be afraid to leave the starter area. There are things to see, ships to fly, roids to blow up,... :D
And who knows, maybe on your hunt for mining grounds, you're going to find a place where you would set up shop permanently. You don't have to have a "home base" of course, but as your fleet gets bigger, it's nice to have some order in the chaos.

So today is NSD (New Ship Day). I get to take possession of a brand new, sexy ASP Explorer she is outfitted for Mining and I am super excited. I did see a video on laser mining....is it still viable? Is it worth putting a few Laser Miners on the new Lady?

You will hear people talk about double painite and triple LTD. Supposedly pay more then deep core (if you got the right ship atleast). Since I use smaller ships and I don't want to "afk mine" I haven't tried that. I've been told AspX is a great deep core miner. Most people seem to swear by the python, atleast after engineering. Many do Krait MkII, but I'm giving the Orca a try. For laser mining you tend to go type 9 or clipper I think.

I am definitely Deep Core Mining at the moment. I LOVE the asteroids exploding. Just trying to validate my Steam files as I had a few "Mauve Adder' crashes. I swear the Steam Validation sits at 99% for YEARS :p

Well do what you find fun is my advice, when you find that something feels like grind, stop doing it and start doing something other. Big ships vs others, well big ships kind of need their own mindset to enjoy them, they are lumbering beasts, and somewhat tedious to fly if you want fast reactions, on other hand they do feel like big and powerfull things. For example if my Cutters trajectory intersects with some smaller ships trajectory, well thats smaller ships problem, not mine.

Though when you have enough money, you can take best of both worlds, have something from big ship category, and whatever smaller things you like. I for example have Krait Phantom for my wandering purposes.

I am trying to compute "still hanging out in the starter area" and "Currently around Eravate" ..... how did you manage that?

I give up. That's where the game put me when I first logged in.

You must have started it before the last update as all the new starts are in the pilot's federation district permit-restricted area (Dromi, Matet, etc..) - that is why your "starter area" and "Eravate" didn't compute. LHS 3447 (near Eravate) and Asellus Primus are no longer start-up locations even on clear-saves, unfortunately all of us that play iron-man are consigned to the noob-zone on clear-save nowadays.

Anywayup - no worries, just enjoy yourself is all that matters.

Not really a dev on this game so cant tell you. All I know is I bought it in 2018 and never played I started in LHS 3447 on my first login.

As this is a Newbie channel I have no clue where I "Should have started' or where the "Starter Area" should be, only where I started and where I am.

Perhaps you fired it up once when you bought it and forgot. And now when you started playing, you spawned where you last logged out - in LHS 3447, which is the old "starter area".
In one of the latest patches they added a proper starter area where more experienced players don't have access (coz' seal clubbing), so that's why Para was confused. :)

The main thing is - you survived the start and are now on your way to glory among the stars. :D
