General Why do Encoded mat's have their own HUD tab?

Since I found myself in the Suggestions forum....

Why do Encoded mat's have their own tab on your Cargo HUD but Raw mat's and Manufactured mat's are lumped in together?

There are times when it's useful to have ALL your mat's displayed together.
There are other times when it's useful to have them all separate.

I see no advantage to having Raw and Manufactured mat's in the same tab but Encoded mat's in it's own tab.

Honestly, I think it'd probably be better if all three were combined in one tab and then you'd be able to see EVERY mat' at a glance or you'd be able to use the filter if you wanted to focus on one type of mat'.

And that'd have the side-effect of removing the Encoded mat's tab, thus freeing up a bit of UI real-estate which might be put to better use.

They used to all be combined and, coupled with the previously joint 1000 inventory item space, was a complete nightmare. The separation makes for less scrolling and therefore easier to see what you need.

Separating data from physical makes sense to me, but I see your point about there now being three distinct categories of materials.

So I contend that they should be separated out three ways instead of the current two.

Yeah.

TBH, I was actually going to suggest each gets it's own tab.

Thinking about it, though, the part that I find most irritating is when you're trying to work out if you've got enough mat's for an upgrade and you constantly have to flip between the Raw/Manufactured tab and the Encoded tab to see what you've got.

Now we've got the ability to filter what we see, I think it'd be more useful to have them all in the same tab.
That way, you can easily look at individual categories or see everything, together.

Ideally, though, it might be nice if there were three little icons representing Encoded, Raw and Manufactured which you could just check or un-check to see that category of mat's, rather that twiddling with a drop-down menu.

I'm just happy the "Encoded Materials" Tab is on the Inventory Panel. With the design philosophy of FDev, Encoded Materials had a very distinct chance of appearing on a tab of the Transactions Panel.

When pre-3.0 there was a separate inventory cap for "all data" and "all raw+manufactured" it made sense to have them listed separately. The lists should certainly be merged now, though.

Agreed. If they are not all together, then all separate is better than current state.

So what are you going to suggest with the Guardian and Thargoid manufactured and data materials? Putting everything into one list makes for a really long search. When I'm farming USS the smaller the better.

There is an in-game program on Github called EDEngineer that tracks your builds and materials. One way to go.

bored with cheap filler game mechanics? 3rd party automation providers to the rescue! free! edengineers or inara are your friends. if you're messing with mats so much that this becomes an issue you are absolutely supposed to use those anyway. this is by design, i think! ;)

One is physical objects.

with actually no mass. 🤷‍♂️

We don't talk about logical applications of real mass in elite fella.
