Scanning ships - what is your secret?

Probably all of us have done it at some stage, targeted a ship when leaving a station to hopefully get some of those tasty ENCODED mats.

But has anyone worked out a system, are there certain ships that are more prone to give up some data, does the NPC rank have anything to do with it.

Come on, someone must have a theory about it, we all can't be solely relying on the RNG Gods - surely not :D

I just scan ..

The only thing that doesn't just go up over time on its own at a fast enough rate to keep me happy, just from me regularly playing the game, is wake scans. For those, I go to Chelomey Orbital in open. The capital ship dock and the swarm of navy ships, along with the regular station traffic, provide a pretty steady supply of wakes.

Also it's funny to watch the other players react to a hollow triangle zipping around outside the station.

Just scan everything - also do not forget to scan whilst super cruising to your destination - as long as there are ships in front of you they should be targeted and scanned.

And often it is the third ship in the wing of three security ships which nets me some data.

But that could just be coincidence.

I'm not sure what you're asking exactly.
Transport ships give you different data materials than combat ships, but that's obvious and in noted in material descriptions.

I don't know if rank has anything to do with target giving you material, or not - when you can tell what rank NPC is, you can as easily scan them, so I'm not sure if it matters.

If mass isn't critical, engineer Sensors for wide angle and get ~180 degree coverage.

I just flick the hat switch while cruising, in combat, docking. Scan it all, trade the rest. ;)

Never payed a great deal of attention to it because I've always gone to specific places to get various types of Encoded mat's but, anecdotally, it seems like ships with identifiable "roles" are most likely to yield scan-data; things like cruise ships, courier ships and system authority ships etc.
Often seems like the bigger they are the more likely they are to yield data too.

Not sure if this is an answer but there's permit locked system which has convoy beacon always - Isinor

Nope, never did that.
You sound like trader or explorer or doing some other activities which do not include ship scanning. Try bounty hunting - you'll get bounties, the data and mats. Try bounty hunting in anarchy - additionally kill haulers, you'll get even more mats (heat vanes, conductive polymers). It's like killing several birds with one stone.
