ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

I think it's an important and much needed phase for the game to go through, which is worth the sacrifice of some delays, and which will have a greatly positive impact on new features when they're eventually released. It's easier to enjoy new content in a stable environment.

Like others though, I am interested to know whether fixes for balance issues (including for BGS and PowerPlay) are going to be included with the bug fixes.

Thanks.

X4 gets buckfixes frequently. And Most issues can be fixed by moding if you have the Passion. Its a good games comparing 20 devs to fake 100. Just Compare the last x Bugfix to ed. And you will See the Passion on both sides. Same goes for communication
But that game was REALLY sh.tty at launch, definitely unplayable.....game didn't even recognise my GEFORCE GTX1050 graphics cardo_O

Thanks Will an others at FD. TBH your post almost made me feel guilty insofar as I contributed to the angst. On the bright side though, applaud FD's decision concentrate on squashing bugs and refine existing features so all sweet re the delay on FC's :)

Core features are still fundamentally broken in X4. Fleet AI straight up ignoring enemies for example, so a tiny fleet slowly wipes out entire installations while your massive fleet meanders about. :/

He is just ultra biased: FD releasing buggy software and fixing it? Devs dont care! Egosoft releasing broken software and fixing it? True passion! Angry nerds are about as reasonable as people at political rallies. :p

Community: There's been no new content for existing players for ages baaaawwww

FD: But we told you about that and you were oka-

Community: BAAAAAAWWWWWW

FD: Okay! Here's the new content you existing players have been waiting for

Community: WHAT!? How dare you give us new content when there are bugs in the game! Why don't you ever fix the BUUUUUUUGGGGSSSS!!?

FD: We do! We fix hundreds with every pat-

Community: NOT FAST ENOUGH! NO NEW CONTENT UNTIL THE BUGS ARE FIXED!

FD: Okay! We'll stop everything we're doing right now and fix the bugs first. But it means the new content needs to be delayed again.

Community: WHAT!? YOU NEVER GIVE US NEW CONTENT! NEW CONNNTTEEENNTTT NOW!

FD: But we can't do both!

Community: We want a whole year of bug fixes, and a whole year of new content. ALL IN THE SAME YEAR! BAAAWWWWWWWW
Personally I am not bothered about the delay I am far more interested in the next expansion and that needs to build on as stable bug free a foundation as possible.. but my god there is some rewriting of history here. Fleet carriers are ALREADY delayed by 12 months (meant to be 2018 along with those iceplanets which we saw the target render which was teased as an apology for the delay in 2017.
So sure.. personally I am ok with it but I don't think belittling those who have lost all faith in FD is on TBH. These people have a valid point

Thanks for the update @Will Flanagan.

I guess I'm definitely a fanboy as ED is my favourite game - bugs and all - luckily none of the bugs have made the game unplayable for me, just frustrating sometimes. Since there's plenty of people who've said the game is "literally unplayable" recently, I'm 100% on-board with fixing those problems first and some of the frustrating ones (fixing the lost deliveries bug that affects station repairs would be great).

I'm most looking forward to visiting other planet types, particularly atmospheric landings and gas giant clouds, so I do hope to see some of that by the end of 2020. To be honest I'm not that interested in personal fleet carriers, I was more on-board with one per squadron. I like being one man in a little spaceship flying in a big galaxy, so I'm most interested in getting more places to visit (with as few bugs as possible).

I totally understand why loads of players are really looking forward to owning their own FC, so I hope the delay doesn't get any longer, but I'm a bit worried that the FC gameplay will just make lots of players angry when it arrives. Hopefully I'll be wrong. :)

This seems to happen a lot, don't it? "Elite is garbage compared to insert game here" Then when people actually look into the game named, it's found they have as many or worse bugs.

X:R was broken for years, X4 is broken. NMS has had way worse issues, but is currently stable. SC will always remain broken. Me suspect gamers simply expect too much, and what happens in this genre is the 21th century version of what Bethesda encountered with Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Serious question, you mentioned 3 to 4 months until we get our first bug-fixing update. Why so long? Can't we get bug fixes every week to two weeks? I would appreciate not being stuck with a buggy game for 4 months in my honest opinion. Also how many fixes should we expect in three to four months? That seems like plenty of time to squash most of the bugs in the game.

Greetings Commanders,
...

Dear Will and team!

It is good you (the team) realize at last that fixing bugs should be a "must be done for yesterday" since it is a warranty issue. However, the Carrier delay is both very-very disappointing, and also very-very frightening about the team's abilities: seeing reality and facts, and sincerity between the teams and towards us (= the players). :-(

I'm going to extrapolate: carriers are still not ready, even after a full year of it's initial release date. If it would be almost ready now (= would only need some bug fixes), you would not need to delay it, even if you are prioritizing bug fixing from now on. It would have been about time (= it's almost November) to introduce fleet carriers to the public with an big announcement (= had they come in December), but the September update issues and some major problems with the carriers made you change your course - yet again. And let's be precise: there will be only 2 bug fixing patches at a maximum (= you said January is the first, and 3-4 month puts he next one to April), not a "series of updates", then carriers and the end of Q2 (= June).

You have not learned from the Horizons mistakes and you have not learned from the Beyond mistakes - 4 years and you are still making the same errors over and over again. I always say to my colleagues that it is not a problem to make mistakes - mistakes will happen. Just don't make the same mistake again, learn from the first one, prepare and adapt.

You wrote: "We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated" and "They’re making fantastic progress and on schedule for release by the end of next year".

Consider the things I wrote above, and answer to this: why should we believe you, what is and what will be different now?

Peter

They're going to be doing enough to justify a beta. And they're going to need time to conduct said beta, and then process any bug reports from said beta.

It's almost as if making games with that many aspects and mechanics to it is complex.

Oh wait, that's because it is ! :D

But then, Frontier is taking heat for bugs while Bethesda releases hot messes and the community is supposed to be ok with it :D

Community: We want a whole year of bug fixes, and a whole year of new content. ALL IN THE SAME YEAR! BAAAWWWWWWWW

The fact that you can't even imagine releasing new content that actually works is some pretty strong Stockholm syndrome. What happened is that FD delays the only meaningful content in over a year, which itself was already delayed by a year, for eight more months. While it supposedly was pretty much ready by now. And why? To fix bugs that shouldn't have been here in the first place, after a period of little content where they presumably already focused on the core gameplay and bugfixes.

People aren't 'crying'. People are pointing and saying:"lol, u guys are terrible."

Simply put: we are in a restaurant and looking forward to a nice meal on a clean plate. Telling us it is unrealistic to want both is just plain ridiculous. :)

Thanks for the update on X4....it can stay as an unclicked icon on my desktop for another year then;).

As long as FD keep me informed with what's happening, I'm OK & will continue to enjoy the game.
I've been planning ahead until December to get ready for the FC's introduction.
Now I know that's not until Q2 next year, I can re-think......maybe I'll hunt for RAXXLA:unsure:

Greetings Commanders,

Following the launch of the September Update last month, we’d like to provide you all with an update on our plans for Elite Dangerous.

Firstly, thank you for all of your feedback on the September Update, which you've shared with us on the forums, across social media, on livestreams and through the Issue Tracker. There is no doubt that, in addition to the new features, the September Update introduced a number of issues and bugs which caused a lot of frustration. We are really sorry for these issues. We realise that some of the issues had an impact on your ability to enjoy Elite Dangerous. The team have been working hard to address the most critical issues and have already released a series of patches and updates to bring those fixes in as quickly as possible.

However, we know there's more to be done. You've asked for more focus on existing bug/fixes and issues, and for the community to be better integrated into the development process and testing for these upcoming updates.

In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.
As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

The team have been hard at work on the next major milestone, which you may remember we mentioned back in March as our next major paid addition to the game. They’re making fantastic progress and on schedule for release by the end of next year. We are very excited to show you what we’ve been working on. However, we can only announce the content when it’s at the right stage of development, we estimate this will be ready to talk about at some time in summer 2020, after the Fleet Carriers update. We appreciate there is a bit of a wait, but we want to make sure it is ready to be shown before making our full official announcement to the world.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing and continued support and for helping give us the feedback, steer and insight to make decisions that will benefit the entire community and for your continued passion and dedication.

No FC? What am I gonna do with all that money I stacked!!!

JK, good decision. Try to make the code sleak and lean so you'll have a better feeling of what to expect from new implementations, instead of having every release f****ing up the code badly and unexpectedly.

Peter

When they say carriers will come in six months, end of 2018, and then delay it by a year to end of 2019, only to delay it by another eight months when it's almost November while tacitly trying to shift blame to the community, the answer is obvious: you cannot trust them. It's that simple. I don't accept this nonsense from CIG, won't accept it here either.

"We tell you guys so little because when we say something we want to be sure it is correct and reliable!"

Lol.
