Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

... I am wondering about mats....say germanium for example.... you can get it by shooting rocks, very slowly filling up your bucket, but will you also find larger amounts through mining, or are certain mats only available through mining and others only through shooting rocks. Hmmm ...get my drift? Is there something like a spreadsheet you would know that lists all mats and where to find them most likely?

Sorry if that's confusing.

A spreadsheet? No.

But:
  • you can get all raw materials from surface prospecting
  • you can get low level raw materials from mining
  • you can get all raw materials from geological or biological surface sites (including Barnacles)
  • you can get high grade raw materials from crashed Anaconda sites (never tried this myself, I'd have to Google it)
  • you can get the highest grade (only, but that's where the mat traders come in) raw materials from Crystalline Shards sites - Dharrch Streynjer has created a howto for this here. And if you ask in the Fighter Club thread, he might even schedule an outing (no promises though - unless you want to come to Colonia 😁)

Dunno how up to date this is...

Morning...Wow!.... heaps of useful infos... :)

Thanks a lot folks! As for geo. sites: Once you have the list of geo.sites numbered from 1 ...to xx showing up in your panel, it doesn't matter which site you visit, or does it?

Mostly no.

But note which ones you have visited as it takes several days at least for them to recover so if you drop back on one harvested recently you will be wasting your time.

The other thing with geos is that the various clusters are in a more "concentrated: locale. You save quite a lot of mileage in just driving around a random planet... and time come to that.

While it's a cheap thrill to get a needle cluster for that G5 raw, one shouldn't overlook the piceous (sp?) cobbles as they yield basic building blocks.

Edit: and basic building blocks can equal SRV refuel/rearm/chassis repair because it lost integrity when you ran over that grain of sand.
