3305 Squeegee technology severly lacking.

Why not replace the smudge with a good feature instead?
Steps:
1. place hud markers actually on the HUD of helmet
2. remove smudge
3. add an automatic optical filtering code to the cockpit glass, becoming more opaque when hit with high intensity lighting (to protect your eyes)

Here's another screenshot of the scratches/smudges on my windshield, i think it looks great and adds to the atmosphere of being inside a real ship, which is kind of a big part of Elite.

And that does indeed look quite subtle, somewhat charming, and immersive.

This, on the other hand...?

... not so much... :) The obvious repeating patterns of the texture, the amount of it, and the somewhat fake look it has, really doesn't appeal. It was far better and more subtle in 3.2, so I imagine it has something to do with the lighting model.

Are we sure is it supposed to be dirty though?

I assumed it was some scattering effect because we're not actually looking through glass but some transparent alloy. Stuff you would expect to be on Lakon's giant window cockpit that gets shot at with laser beams and plasma bursts and armor piercing slugs and so on.

By-product of all the space dust and micro-meteors you fly through.

This a set effect, programming aging into the canopy may not be something FD wants to get into. Ship damage/wear effects are really not in the game. The Anaconda is the only ship that exhibits damage.
