This is what Maintenance Mode must be like :(

Elite is definitely in a lul and I expect that if the 2020 update doesn't blow everyone away it may be the last update, but it's not doom. Even on the dreaded steam charts numbers (as always) remain consistent. The current maintenance mode for us veterans is definitely disappointing but surely we all remember the first time your sidewinder lifts up to the launch pad and you see space for the first time, or the first time you jump and a star fills your view.

Surely we all remember how amazing it was? and there are still many new players enjoying this and going on to spend the hundreds or thousands of hours we have.

It's only disappointing because we're out of stuff to do but for those just starting they have the whole amazing game ahead of them.

As much as I've fallen totally out of love with Fdev and their ludicrous approach to the community the game is still the best game I've ever played.

And even if they turn it off tomorrow I've had near 2000 hours from a £40 game that's £0.02 per hour!!! even if I add up the multiple copies, books, audio books and cosmetics I've bought I only get up to £0.20 an hour!!

No other form of entertainment has given me so much. I've resigned myself to this being the beginning of the end of my ED journey. I can't see them properly supporting VR in the new era and base building doesn't interest me at all. If this is to be my last few months (which I hope it isn't) I can't complain at what I've gotten from the game.

Yes we are in "maintenance mode", yes Fdev have lost there way with the game but we should still be happy we got to jump on for the journey (if this also spells the beginning of the end for you too)!

But we don't know what the "New Era" is about.
So if they cut content we will never know.
absolutely...... and I think you are on the money for why they are being so tight lipped.

In the past I think it is fair to say they over "promised" and under delivered (just my opinion and i use the term promised without meaning the literal term) ... I do think they are taking it too much the other way now........

Fortunately, we had 'leaks,' At least, rumoured leaks, but they've looked pretty convincing. :) Also, remember the lightspeed removal of "buildings" from the Arx description in the web code that was so telling? The irony is that this 'confirms' the earlier leak about basebuilding which, as far as I can tell, was never something anyone seriously asked for anyway (again !).

Considering recent developments i think we can discount most of those now. In fact, do i detect an element of mischief in these leaks? I mean if somebody knew that fdev wasnt actually making any of it.
The big leak is listed and debated in another thread. But the leak looks good to date, because there are examples of how developments in FD's other games provided confirmation.

I refuse to start my post title with a "So." For fellow forumites who don't like to read a lot, I get to my main point in the third paragraph, but I'm feeling very cynical about what may lie ahead .....

We appear to have entered a 'pause' in game development. No big new features, promises of stuff coming 'soon' that doesn't materialize, and the forum filling with lists of bugs that need fixing. Lots of fixes, updates to fix bugs, followed by further fixes to fixes, and so on ......

We believe new features are in the pipeline, so it's not like it will last forever, or will it? but this is what it will be like after the next Big Update of the New Era. Some more promised features coming 'soon' that don't materialize, and the forum filling with lists of bugs that need fixing. Lots of fixes, updates to fix bugs, followed by further fixes to fixes, and so on ......

And now, for your Bingo score cards, I introduce Fleet Carriers ! Why, I'm wondering, is a major feature allowed closely to precede a very large DLC that is described in hype as like a whole new game? Is the real intention to stall this further, in order to flesh out what now may be left out of New Era ? Fleet Carriers to substitute for Base Building, anyone? It's not like FD haven't pulled this trick adopted this approach before: ice planets is one example, the Fleet Carriers feature has itself been promised and pulled out before this latest announcement.

There's always doom, I suppose. Doom is worse than Maintenance Mode, isn't it? :)
Maintenance mode implies maintenance. It’s more like deterioration mode.

I was listening to an opinion over the weekend that space legs could turn out to be more no mans sky rather than legs added on to space truck simulator.

New game, much wider audience, a significant change from what we have now.

That would be quite interesting if that’s how it turned out.. my only hope is they cut the baggage of current gen console support so they can be normal again.

Who am I kidding though if they can’t manage us getting even a fraction of that demographic looking in their demographic will completely wipe them out :) Not even considering industry standards for content for live service games which frontier will get measured against. Lol lol lol

I think FDevs confidence in the community's ability forgive blunder after blunder is just about awe inspiring

Cause the cracks. I can sees them.

At this rate releasing this big new season will be pointless. Return revenue on money spent will be less than expected. Few and I mean very few of the gamers I played with are even remotely interested in buying it. I know I won't be!
The story moves to slow. There's too many bugs and far to much repetition in a game this big.

Well, I'd buy it as ED is still a great game I play a lot in comparison to other games on my machine. I also don't expect great promises that can't be kept but realistic plans that are communicated early. Maybe some of the grindy or less inspired bits (Engineers, PP to name two) we now have could have been modified to be awesome content if they'd... you know... talk to those who actually play the game. Sure, you need to filter out a lot of white noise from the community, but at the end of the day you still probably get less crap flung at you that way :p

Insufficiently doomed for some.

The game passed doomed some time ago. It’s now just a failed project limping on until the plug is finally pulled. You only have to look at most other good games to realise how poor a job FDev have done with this game. They’ve updated the game and made it worse than when it launched.

Worse than when it launched ? I was going to call you out on that one, but then I watched the launch trailer :D ... looks like it might be ready for New Era 🤭

I honestly don't think that space legs when released will be so much rich in features to become the core of the game. I expect that space legs will be used to expand current activities, not to introduce a lot of new ones.

At the same time one could thing that all the technology Fdev build to be utilized in their "planet something" franchises will be somewhat utilized in ED new era... and that could mean that legs, being them space or on surface, could really become central to the experience.

We'll see i guess.
