If you could make one change to E:D

Stiff bickies :D Is the long standing issue a real one or one they self imposed?

I think the response 'tough luck' is one that only really works when the situation favours the one wanting to impose the rule. Maybe you could just ignore them?
 
Secretly place all the 'Eliteimoaners and Elitexiteers' commanders in a galaxy of their own then let the rest of us carry on playing the game FDev want to make.
 
I would have those blooming awful lights on the side struts of the cockpit in the asp line of ships removed. Makes the ship unflyable for me.
I still love to fly my asp.... but yeah those lights are really annoying.

My change however would be a revamp of smuggling and piracy, kinda like the ones we had for mining and exploration (which were amazing).
It's really a pity Fdev completely ignores those 2 activities. We have an awesome space game with pretty much no piracy and smuggling gameplay.... it's crazy when you think about it.
 
Expanding on my previous post, it would be cool to have an NPC 'chat' area where you can get in-game hints and ideas. Or, optionally, give the option for mission givers to also drop hints about things in-game. If not an NPC chat area, then maybe something like a "Hitchhikers Guide" where players can get 'common' knowledge of things and places to do in E: D.

For starting players, there's little they know about the E: D galaxy without trawling the forums or You Tube.

Some examples:

"Say, have you been to the Pleiades? Some say there are alien constructs on some of the planets out there... I think Merope has some barnacle-like structures on it."

"My sister just got back from [sector_x] - there's a generation ship out there. You know, one of the ones that didn't make it. She said it was creepy."

"Hey, this mission is so easy it will be done before you'd have chance to get to one of those old Voyager probes in Sol!"

"Don't sweat this mission - it's a lot shorter trip than going to Hutton Orbital in Alpha Centauri!"

"I see you're only Federation rank [low]. I'd rank up with them if I were you - you can visit Sol, the birthplace of humanity."

Data could be updated real-time for new discoveries:

"Hey, rumours have it that a CMDR has just found [generation_ship_x] in [sector_y]. Really want to visit that!"

You can see where I'm going with this - add things in such that new players get a taster/idea of the cool things and places to visit in the game.
 
One thing. One thing? Hmmm.

For me that would be:

Shorten the FSD spool-up / countdown / Hyperspace tunnel time.

Let's have it be 3 seconds maximum, from "Frameshift Drive Initiated" - BOOM - to arrival at the next system or supercruise.

The designers for the past four years; The person/people responsible for basically every design choice since 2.0 (& even CQC and Powerplay before that I guess).
