Are there any long distance exploration bonus points?

Was thinking about it on my last long distance trip. When we turn our discovery data in, we getting certain amount of credits based on the scanned systems value and some points towards our exploration rank. If I understand it correctly value of each scanned body is standard across the galaxy (based on many factors), so if you scan one system next door and another one just like that 20K LY away they both should cost the same amount of money. I wander if distance traveled, in this example 20K LY, has any effect on the exploration points or they tied to the monetary value and therefore the same for both systems as well? I don't do that much of the exploration, so I might be missing something here.

Sadly, no. No incentive to go places, except for the personal achievement and first discovery bonuses. But the latter can be gotten as close as 1000-2000 LYs, going in the right direction.
This is what I was suspecting but wasn't so sure. I did one exploration trip around Elysian Shore few month ago, than trip to Colonia and then all the way to the Ishums Reach and haven't noticed that much of the difference in my exploration rank increase rate vs money received. Would be nice to have some kind of bonus for all these dangers out there but I guess "you can't always get what you want". Lol

To me tagging for example a Wolf-Rayet star is more valuable than earn more money for it. At the start of my career was different, Colonia-SagA* trip wasn't enough to earn Elite rank, but that is changed. Especially since money became more easier.

I'm not sure, but there might still be the odd planetary nebula out there to discover. Not likely to do that anywhere near the main areas of human colonization.

In terms of financial reward or the like, no, not specifically, well, other than the bonus of being the first to discover a system. Does anyone go exploring for the credits though?

Oh, and for exploration related passenger missions, I believe those tend to reward more the farther you go to fulfill them. They still have those in the game, right?

Does anyone go exploring for the credits though?
Not me for sure. I was making more cash in the bubble and only did some relatively local exploration trips. When I sailed into the Abyss I just wanted to see what's on the other side. All the questions about exploration came to my mind much later, when I started scanning systems in the search for a nice place to park my ship for a few days and to get some materials for AFM reload.😄

Does anyone go exploring for the credits though?

Most of my cash reserve is from exploration data now, my total assets have more than doubled in the past year or so (since 3.3). Not tried the new mining. Not really exploring though, just using it for it's BGS value so the long distance not being a thing works to my advantage.

Sadly the distance does not matter. I went to the centre of galaxy just because I want to and because I want to see all those stars outside of my ship in VR.
Thing is that it is so tedious and boring that I'm nearly a year in deep space now and barely reached the half way mark on my journey.
Ok, ok, one might argue that if you just fly there it shouldn't take you longer than few hours to get there but is that exploring then?
I like to stop, scan, poke around and then move forward.
The credits are the tertiary objective in here.

Don't get me wrong. The vast majority of credits I've made in the game of the handful I have made have been from exploration. It's mostly just been a nice side bonus though. I was able to kit out a Python with it at least, but other than that, they've mostly just been collecting dust in the money bin.

There are credits to be made, of course, but I was just wondering if it was a compelling motivational factor for exploration for some or not. I mean, I guess the road to riches was or is a thing, so I suppose it is to some.

Cheers.

Well the the bright side is that if a player wants to just explore the galaxy for whatever reason it's no longer an end-game activity to do after the player has earned enough cash by doing other things. A bit of SRV driving in the bubble can find some scavenged goods to sell, and getting to the point where earnings from selling exploration data is enough to buy a high range ship arrives much sooner in the player progression now.

As far as things to find goes, there is at least as much as there has always been, and that was always enough for me anyway.

Happened across two more planetary nebulae (stellar system sized) fairly well out in the middle of nowhere since my previous post and they were already tagged. Doesn't bode too well. Back when I tagged the first one I found in 3301 (2015), I don't think we could even select star types, if memory serves. Now you can just turn off the stars and look for the glowing balls of space haze. Seems kind of cheap.

At least I got a decent pic out of the deal on the second nebula.
