Supercruise, murderhobos and helping your wingman

I was in a wing with a friend who was mining opals in private group.
Said friend got interdicted by an NPC pirate, and I foolishly thought I could help him thanks to wingman navlock.The moment he dropped, so did I.
Except I dropped 0.5 ls away, unable to help in any way.
So I disable navlock, try the traditional approach, that is select wake and approach.
Same problem.
I try to drop to him by selecting wing beacon and flying towards that.
Same problem.
After the friend dealt with the pirate and we went off to a station, the navlock worked without any issues. When he dropped, I too got dropped and place within 2km of my wingman.

I put the game off for several months due to the same thing and I come back to see this nonsense is still around.
Any idea how to avoid this or any workarounds?

I have only had issues with it close to planets, everywhere else it's been working a treat

That 30% chance of dropping somewhere far away adds a little spice, you know?

This is the only time it's ever messed up for me too.
