ObsidianAnt: 3305 Elite Dangerous - New Player Minor Factions, Frontier's AGM, Scourge Decal

If the current expectation of 2020 was a giant cake, this speculation adds a whole new tier of chocolate sponge to it.

I'm guessing that the agile development and rather scattershot updates have turned ED into spaghetti and someone needs to put it right.

Hmm. I can tell its dinnertime as a lot of food is slipping into my posts....

Doesn't hurt to hear this :)

David assured me that the codebase will be renewed via a paid expansion. This is great news, as the QA team aren't picking up bugs, it seems. This may be a CI/CD pipeline issue, but I feel after speaking to the board, modern engineering practices are very well embedded, and this is rather that the product codebase needs to be rationalised, and the paid update will fix current & future ills.

Although fixing future ills might be a milestone too far ;)

(Also good that Elite is Braben's first born of course...)

So the 2020 game will be Elite: All Bugs Fixed and Thanks for all the Fish?

I know it's finding straws in haystacks, but David Braben's comment is significant in the light of all the rumors and comments about code quality, bugs and associated QA of releases. Congrats to StuartGT for uncovering that !

So Zac reappears in the autumn of 2020 to say "well here are your Fleet Carriers, and we fixed all the code for you, so enjoy. Meanwhile we are excited to be working on the New Era of DLC Updates for the end of 2021 and beyond with the new code structure."🤷‍♂️

The Code Cake better be made of premium chocolate. If its another slice of brown toilet fudge the next AGM is going to be considerably more feisty.

It would be impossible for FD not to develop on the PS5 / Scarlett. A better question would be if the pretty ice shaders were impossible to get running smoothly on PS4 and FD simply waited for the next gen (as it would be too much platform disparity if PC had it alone).
That is my thinking too. It would make sense.

I think FD are using 2020 as a waypoint to tie up a lot of loose ends, both in code and in function between platforms. Of course, the opposite is true: if indeed the PS4 / XB can't use the shaders, whats going to happen to backwards compatibility going forwards with the PS5 / Scarlett?

Don’t reckon “Same Game, Less Bugs!” would sell that well ;)

Seems more likely it means a big rebuild + marketable additions.

(Kinda doubt the AGM hoppers would be all sunshine about the former scenario either really)

Well, it was more than obvious that they had a massive problem that just kept getting bigger.

Stuck inside a square corner, surrounded by a jungle of spaghetti code hastily assembled by many different Coders over the course of 5 years - with a huge rattlesnake tail noone was left to seriously manage anymore, let alone fully understand.
(like literally playing the title "snake" on a huge screen for years and things inevitable getting tight - and inevitably at risk to seemingly fall apart)

On the "it's his firstborn" - keep in mind that's David talking (= advertising) to Investors.
If it was, one could process over "severe child neglect" in court with a 100% assured outcome of that case ;)

Anyway, them dumping the old mess and re-booting key cornerstones from scratch and clean code is good news.
If that involves implementing modern build tools, Version Management and somewhat automated Test environments with QA sitting in the right place... they have a realistic chance not to repeat the past years.

PS.
It's very telling though that the Customers and Business Partners (Founders/Backers) only get to hear these things from 3rd party. Exceedingly poor Communication Strategy.
That Strategy deserves being scrapped and rebuild from scratch just as well.

Wow - some people really read this differently that I did. 'renewed' and 'rationalised' isn't a how I would describe a rewrite - and the GI guy seemed to be happy they already have good coding QA practices, so no change required there...

Hmm thought they were fixing bugs now but a renewal of code in a dlc seems like a waste to fix them now minus major game breaking bugs. So something doesn't add up imo!

New code base in a paid for expansion doesn't bode well for player, game, and support fragmentation, or would they drop the old era?

On the other hand, it very well might just be retroactive polishing up of things under the hood.
