ObsidianAnt: 3305 Elite Dangerous - New Player Minor Factions, Frontier's AGM, Scourge Decal

New code base in a paid for expansion doesn't bode well for player, game, and support fragmentation, or would they drop the old era?

On the other hand, it very well might just be retroactive polishing up of things under the hood.

Cut the ties to the old generation of consoles. Until current players get the same graphics as alpha players did (just as an easy target, better is better) its still suboptimal that a downgrade occurred (and still does eg look at type 10). The only thing that would benefit from a downgrade is old consoles.

This management mode of operation doesn't have to change...

...so lets hope they chance their attitude as well

They’ve made the big change in ‘attitude’ I wanted to see. Dumping Seasons for a combined run. Just gotta wait and see now if the new attitude is on the up ;)

The PC minimum spec would need to be substantially raised to even surpass the current consoles.

As a customer i didn't have a problem with seasons.. im not sure how the sliders work but given how much i play elite, i would probably prefer to pay them and get something premium rather than do something that frontier find cruisy internally and have it for free...... oh wait that's exactly what they did.. jwe + planet zoo. It all makes sense now.

To your wish then, hopefully they include a full seasons worth of gameplay out of the box.... or are promises to finish space legs for free over the next 2 years good enough?

That's okay. Im running on a 10603gb at 2560x1600 + reshade at the moment.. theres still some in the tank there with that non enthusiast anymore setup.

New code, even new baseline code doesn't necessitate a new game, and hardware demands and graphics rendering should be scalable. That's what settings are for. I don't care if people feel bad if they can't run the game on ultra regardless of the platform as long as the ultra actually is ultra and the game isn't poorly optimized.

Distant world terrain rendering did take a hit as well (I've got the 16K pics), but this was even after Horizons.

Read between the lines. It clearly says Ironman mode will replace Solo.
Good news then. One of the reasons I solo is because there is no ironman/hardcore mode. The game is way too forgiving to the point where people casually throw ships away for "fun."

Ok, but Open is getting replaced by Battle Royal Mode, so don’t get too cocky ;)

So if I have read this correctly, a game is paid for, that has bugs and not working as intended, the bugs will be fixed when an "expansion is released" and further payment is required to fix the bugs that were not supposed to be there in the first place.
This new expansion will have bugs, are payments going to be needed to pay to fix those aswell...

It seem you may not have read it correctly :/

David assured me that the codebase will be renewed via a paid expansion. This is great news, as the QA team aren't picking up bugs, it seems. This may be a CI/CD pipeline issue, but I feel after speaking to the board, modern engineering practices are very well embedded, and this is rather that the product codebase needs to be rationalised, and the paid update will fix current & future ills.

Given past paid updates added core updates for free Occam’s Razor kinda suggests a similar affair this time. Guess we’ll see. (Presumably the core game will have to function in the new code branch. Seems unlikely they’d tranche off the bug fix aspects...)

On a serious note, only the deep space explorers have it a little rough in terms of game mechanics, since they can have months worth of data in a single pop. I guess that's why some people find it fun to troll them. 🧐

That's getting a bit off topic here though.

Did you miss the recent announcement?
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/community-update-22-10.527123
Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.

The bugs will have legs and you will be able to shoot them :)

I saw this video and I dropped my jaw when I saw the quote from Braben himself say "fixes will be in the paid expansion"... So we have to PAY for bug fixes.... Just Wow.

I mean firstly, does that not just confirm that the game's code is a mess, as we suspected, but that it's SUCH a mess, it requires bascially a complete recode to the point of justifying hitting up the player base for money to pay for it.

You’re right, but there’s a more objective way of looking at the situation.. to justify spending resources to do any keystrokes of work on something there needs to be a reason, and for larger rework tasks, the opportunities for justification come when there’s new money coming in. It’s quite rational and it wouldn’t be common sense to do it otherwise.

It’s so surprise that the code may or may not be in a well engineered state... you can assume what you want there. But the work to fix it does need a valid business case to do it, and I don’t think it’s right to knock frontier for playing in those rules. As much as I like knocking frontier for everything else’s they’re substandard on :)

Or like he said, “you can’t blame people for their mistakes, but do ask that they pay for them.”
