Fertility Gene Potential is still very confusing

It was confusing in beta and its just as confusing now. In beta I think many people thought that the ones that showed the potential as basically the full range were because of inbreeding and we just didn't know because we had no way to track the family tree.

Now we still don't have a way to track but the game does indicate in the compare mates screen if the pair is inbreeding or not. But even on pairs that are not indicated as inbreeding, the fertility range is huge. I have two gold tigers both with a fertility of 83%, and no inbreeding warning, yet the potential range is basically 0-83%

Is fertility just always a total crapshoot? In which case why should I even care about inbreeding.

The ingame help clarifies it pretty clear...
Fertility and Immunity arent working like Size and Longevity...

Fertility and Immunity get better results if they are DIVERSE... for example 1 animal having 20% and one having 95%

Ingame help explains it better than me though

Not exactly how I read the help. I thought it was just saying diversity as in not inbreeding. If I honestly am supposed to be seeking out low fertility/low immunity mates to mix in that seems like a silly mechanic.

Adding to the confusion is that every baby born from these parents so far has also had 83% fertility so it doesn't seem like the "range" indicated is even true.

I think the main problem for the confusion is, that lower percentages are red and orange, which would indicate something bad...

But when I see the potential immunity in the example i picked just now, I guess I got it right about how it works

Plus the badges that indicate better animals which you get for higher numbers, plus in general you want higher fertility so as to actually get babies. It makes no sense to me to require lower fertility mates.

One could argue about the immunity-stuff, but i have to agree that the requirement of a low fertility to get a high fertility is nonsense.

edit: albeit that nonsense would explain the horrible stats of my last snow leopard breed

I think it more likely that either the UI indication is wrong, or there is inbreeding in cases where it doesn't indicate so. I'm looking at another pair now that is 100% Fertility and 83% Fertility. No Inbreeding warning. Yet the potential range is 0-100%

I have wondered if the game actually tracks family trees across zoos. Like if I sell an animal's babies, and they have babies at other zoos, and then I unknowingly buy those babies, does the game know it's inbreeding and just doesn't say it?

I think it's probably what the former poster said though. I think having two animals at exactly the same fertility percentage, in the game's mind, is like saying "I have two animals with extremely similar genes", so the game treats it like inbreeding since there's no diversity of genetics.

Best I can tell fertility range is ALWAYS 0-X where X is the best on one of the parents. I have not found a single pairing that doesn't have a range that goes to 0% no matter how related or unrelated or how similar or different the parent fertility values are.

That's not the case for me at all. Typically their fertility does not extend to 0 in my zoo. Also sometimes I mate two animals with 0% fertility and end up getting a baby with 66% fertility, for example.

Can you show me a breeding pair that doesn't have the potential range to 0%? I seriously haven't seen one anywhere in my zoo. Now granted I haven't checked every single pair, more i've just been keeping an eye out for it while I go about my normal business.

Absolutely!

I showed an example of both cases for comparison's sake. I see no trends in the stats that produce high or low fertility, but I do notice that the only two animals in my zoo whose stats extend to zero had recent births. Not sure if that's a factor, but these are the only two in my zoo who show the fertility all the way to zero. They're also highlighted in red, even though there is no inbreeding. Or, if there is inbreeding, I'm unaware of it; maybe they came from the same zoo somewhere down the line? Though that seems unlikely.

EDIT: Ended up having to save them to PDFs because it was the only way I could get them to attach. Hope they open for you!

this frustrates me Immensely because I bought two separate tigers and they were giving me horrible babies despite being gold, and I was like ???

this is basically the worst feature when you combine the fact that we have no way to find out who is related to who. I'm kind of frustrated that it passes over through the trading center? if you're not careful you could buy siblings and suddenly all those credits are down the drain

Well I should clarify that I don't know that's the cause. It's just a guess.

UGH! Sorry there were 4 screenshots there. I'm having serious issues uploading the pictures. Any suggestions?
I usually just upload to imgur then attach here. The forum apparently has a very small size limit on images. I play in 4k and the plain screenshots are too large for the forum :)

That seems to add to my confusion rather than help :) In the second image you have two birds with the exact same fertility yet they don't have the wide spread, which pretty much kills the idea from earlier in the thread that you needed mates with very different fertility.

I suspect what is happening is the game is still considering certain animals as "inbred" but NOT giving the inbreeding warning.

If only we could see the darn family trees!

I use imgur too, works fine here and in any other forum i tried it.
It is also mostly idiot proof... that is why i use it.
