Viewing Pleasure Opinion

For reference, I spend nearly all of my time in ED mining, exploring, or killing the NPC pirates that harass me while I search for sweet sweet painite.
I'd like to add that combat in an asteroid field in VR is quite the experience too. Any combat for that matter. In fact I have to stretch my neck out good before I jump in for a little CQC and inevitably get up with the halo band wet with sweat too. I end up using more visuals outside than scanner and have the sore neck to prove it.

On the other side it does take casual mining to a new level. Just drifting through slowly and prospecting to find the right stone, looking around and examining the surfaces especially in a ship with a good all around view is so much different than on a flat display no matter how many you have imo.

... a bit late to this one...

1. The sense of presence in VR is truly great in Elite. If you are one of the people who can accept the issues with it then yes get a good VR setup. (I am not one so sold-on my Rift.)

my preference:

2. Pin-sharp detail from at least a 1440 monitor is transformative to someone used to 1080 - it is truly a vast improvement in "Viewing Pleasure".

So I would say - try out VR somehow and if you can handle having a box strapped to your face and put up with the many other inconveniences then good for you, if not then get a decent monitor with pin-sharp clarity.

Lots more really great responses here, and I want to say that I appreciate everyone that has replied (and FDev for keeping this thread in DD, that helps!). I do think that I need to try out VR to see what it's like first... got to be honest, at the moment I'm leaning more to the monitor as it would be useful for work and other things.
Elite is about the only game I play, but I do have MS Flight Sim, so who knows, if I got VR that's maybe something I could get more in to again. Ahhh decisions, decisions.

I think next stage for me is to look to see if I can arrange a shop demo or something for VR... Although I'm leaning to the monitor, I don't feel I can completely rule out VR until I've tried it. It's not everyday I have this money available, so I need to make the right decision.

Thank you all again, and long may the conversation continue!

You shoild try it with Elite if possible. There's no game like it! And for an extended session, not just a few minutes. Then you can balance the awesomeness with the annoyances!

And I'd suggest something like Lone Echo / Echo Arena - if you don't get motion sick with the excellent 'zero gravity effect' then nothing will bother you :)

mind you, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2014, I can send the Index back up to 14 days after I've received it. That might be an option.... try it for a week, if I don't like it, send it back and get the monitor... hmmm...

what's the point of spending money on an immersive VR experience only to ruin it with K+M controls?

K+M is how you play a game. VR is how to fly a space ship.

You can use your mouse and keypad to control your spaceship, the pixels of which you can enjoy through you VR headset. Nothing is ruined.

Never tried proper VR and I'm not even sure I could, but what Turd probably refers to isn't about a personal preference for k+m or a hotas, but the "disconnect" your brain will have between the hands and arms you see in VR and what your actual hands are doing. I can expect it will be a bit jarring, if not straight out disorienting at least until one gets used to it.

I’m still quite happily using the crappy old Xbox 360 pad I’ve been using since the game came out but I’ve never really felt the disconnect because the in-game body is mostly just out of sight.

The only time I do get it is when I’m flicking “V”s at whatever system security vessel is scanning me and my Cmdr’s hand stays resolutely on the stick. Skyrim VR and the inverse kinematics mod have spoiled me, you can do proper onenist fist shakes from horseback whenever NPCs start gobbing off at you.
