Frontier Trading Statement & Roadmap Update: Elite Dangerous' next paid-for release targeted for launch at the end of 2020

It's so super exciting and they can't WAIT to tell us, they wan't to scream it from the rooftops! But they can't and we just have to follow them here on the forums or on social medias and there will be stuff(tm) soon(tm)

well this 'leak' was just to get investors hot. no doubt they knew this would end up here (gonna blame stuart for a change) but it's just noise, zero new info except, ... wait, yet another hard deadline. what an old good idea!

So don't take my negitivism as me being negative.

i won't, and i feel pretty much the same :D

that said, there is still a slight, very slight chance that they pull of something a-meee-izing. let's hope. except they probably won't, but it will still be elite unless they drop support for vr, then it will be definitely time to pack. because i doubt they give a damn on backward compatibility, new era and stuff.

personally i expect an attempt at atmospheric planets and legs, which will have some impressive features on video but for the most part will be the same cookie cutter standard mmo mechanics and loops, without the depth of a serious mmo.

more than a year to see that, though, best forget about it. i'm playing more frequently these days, and enjoying it a lot. don't really care much about elite's future, too uncertain, but present is just cozy 😊

Don't know if anyone's already mentioned this but I just wanted to highlight the coverage of this (the whole renewing codebase thing) on this week's Witchspace News (the always excellent weekly news roundup from the Buur Pit crew). This contains one of the clearest, best and most likely explanations of what's probably going on with the current Elite Dangerous codebase and the changes that Frontier have in mind.

Seems a bit of a stretch to jump from a twit to the conclusion that the whole code base is being renewed. Probably much easier to start from scratch in that case and do Elite 2 than wasting time scrutinizing and fixing old code. I suspect there will be specific elements of it that will indeed be updated and improved along with whatever new code is required for the new era features. That has been also the case in previous updates to varying degrees anyways. But from there to read a complete revamp it is a bit of a stretch I reckon.

Ooh, this is the thread I really want to see today: if a wormhole opened connecting the two universes, which game's ships would win in a fight? :D
That'd be a horribly one-sided war. Elite has a complete flight model and working combat mechanics. Plus Citizens are much easier to kill after they've clipped through their ship floors.

The future for Elite Dangerous is also exciting. Frontier is developing a major new paid-for release for the iconic space simulation which will dramatically expand gameplay and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite Dangerous. This will be characterised by significant new features to appeal to existing commanders, whilst being specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020, this major new release on multiple platforms will fall into financial year 2021 (the 12 months ending 31 May 2021).

After making this statement, Mr Braben returned to his office where he spent the remainder of the afternoon idly pondering the specification of his new Sunseeker yacht.

My take on this annoumcement is that i think there will be an explosion of Salt next christmas as Elite ceases to be a pure space flight sim game and instead morphs into something very loosely like Warframe, but with a progression tree that means you start of as a GROPO (Babylon 5 reference), before having the option of learning to fly ships.

This then widens the playerbase from purely flight sim fans, to also those who like more ground based combat in a futuristic setting.

From frontiers point of view that would bring in the big money and transform elite from a niche mmo to something like warframe which is a bit of a phenomenon.

I also find it interesting that Warframe is in the process of developing Railjack which is a space based expansion for that game.

I think Elite is broadening its scope to have ground based combat while warframe is widening its gameplay to incorporate space.
Each game will keep their more unique flavour so Elite will be grounded in realism and science whereas Warframe will be more fantastical.

...before having the option of learning to fly ships...

Well, mr. Elethiomel, I'll step right into the firing line, by declaring that I very much like the idea of having to earn your pilot's licence, and first ship.

However: Combat is the last thing I want out of elite feet, somewhere far behind having to scuttle off to the loo frequently, due to meter number one and two reaching critical levels. :p

I am not buying DLC that costs as much as the base game its just not worth it in my opinion plus the game isnt good enough for me to spend that type of money on it .
