Frontier Trading Statement & Roadmap Update: Elite Dangerous' next paid-for release targeted for launch at the end of 2020

My take on this annoumcement is that i think there will be an explosion of Salt next christmas as Elite ceases to be a pure space flight sim game and instead morphs into something very loosely like Warframe, but with a progression tree that means you start of as a GROPO (Babylon 5 reference), before having the option of learning to fly ships.
I highly doubt that myself. ED may well get legs but I would be amazed if primarily ED isn't always 1st and foremost about flying a ship.
Warframe is a great game no doubt but I don't see ED going that way.

I am not buying DLC that costs as much as the base game its just not worth it in my opinion plus the game isnt good enough for me to spend that type of money on it .
That is perfectly understandable and I think FD will be well aware some won't buy full price day 1. Most games work that way. The big fans will all preorder or buy day one (the ones who have not already bought it of course) everyone else can wait for the inevitable price cut. Eventually it will hit a price you are happy with (assuming you have any interest at all in the game and if not then I guess you would not be here?)

Again from memory The FD coffers are banking on ED and each expansion on average bringing in around £10 a unit. Anything on top is icing. (Sorry no source to back up)

I look at games like destiny, that has pretty chunky (and expensive) expansions.

what did you FD guys do that you think you deserve any new money?

the Gnosis Fail? The C&P system fail? The sept. update fail? broke the BGS? more fails i dont remeber now?!

The future for Elite Dangerous is also exciting. Frontier is developing a major new paid-for release for the iconic space simulation which will dramatically expand gameplay and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite Dangerous. This will be characterised by significant new features to appeal to existing commanders, whilst being specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020, this major new release on multiple platforms will fall into financial year 2021 (the 12 months ending 31 May 2021).
Thanks StuartGT.

Don't know if anyone's already mentioned this but I just wanted to highlight the coverage of this (the whole renewing codebase thing) on this week's Witchspace News (the always excellent weekly news roundup from the Buur Pit crew). This contains one of the clearest, best and most likely explanations of what's probably going on with the current Elite Dangerous codebase and the changes that Frontier have in mind.

Nugget indeed! Thanks Alec. This news is a potential game maker for me.

This report is pleasant for the confirmation of the "New Era" but also because it shows that Frontier is in excellent health.

And continues to set the course for the future.

Fleet Carriers? ... Anyone? :)

Indeed, but just so to put things in perspective, fleet carriers is a specific feature that was just one more part among many others planned in a much larger patch (3.3). The list above gives you the overall view since day 1 for all major and minor updates. And as shown, FDEV actually has a really good record. Also as additional info to help keep things in perspective it is important to remember that particular feature was offered for free.
