Mountain Climbing

Hallo folks!

SO THERE I WUZ....
Looking around on this weird pink planet in the Seagull Nebula. Pink, with large roundish patches of white mountain, it's the oddest looking place I've seen yet, I think.
Anyhoo; I figured I'd break my new SRV in by breaking my new SRV. There's this lovely great mountain right beside me...what could go wrong?

Wow - quite an adventure.
From the ground, the mountain didn't look that big or that challenging:

Gravity on this rock is 1.1G so it's pretty much Earth-normal and a bit - a decent test for the new SRV. No better time like the present so off I go...

I'm immediately impressed with the Scarab's traction and climbing ability. She's no M-35 Mako, but performed FAR better than I expected.

She'd have to - because that mountain was anything but small and easy.

Things got rough quick. Serious terrain, jagged rock, dangerous drops. I wasn't a third of the way up before I was going "Devo...this is dumb!"

That Scarab though - she performed far better than I expected - tons of grunt and stick. While she slid several times - including one awful slide right toward a cliff-edge - she never went off her wheels once. I was impressed. And thankful...

(Eeeek! Don't slide...don't slide...don't slide...)

(About halfway up; the peak in the distance. Based on the rough shape I promptly dubbed this mountain the Schmatterhorn.)

SUCCESS!
Woot!
Now to get down...

(Tense, tricky. But a heck of a lot easier than going up. The far side of the Schmatterhorn was basically a long cliff for much its length and the SRV was pure mountain goat - sure-footed and stable.)

Once back on flat ground, I recalled Big Bad Nasty Warship and took stock. Despite getting seriously banged around and a few major falls, the Scarab was still in one piece - 17% hull. (I try to avoid using mats for repair.) I must say I'm bloody impressed...and I am NOT doing that again any time soon! LOL!

Cheers, friends!

Great little story!

The problem with the SRV(for me) is, there's never any risk of tipping it over while driving insanely steep slopes.
This removes allot of the risk(fun) of climbing steep terrain.
After finding out all I had to do was steer to the side to come to a complete stop, no matter how steep the descent I was doing, it kinda ruined the whole experience for me.

I'm hoping they'll add more vehicles in the future.
I'd like to see a larger vehicle that is more 'top heavy'.

some lovely screenshots here.
are you using any of the new nvidia shaders perhaps?
Well; I have an Nvidia graphics card, so it might well be - unfortunately I know as much about computers as Fred Flintstone...we come from the same era. ;)
Otherwise, all shots were just taken with the free camera. :)

cool thats a no then :) (you have to manually select the shaders and i know you said you're old but I'm pretty sure you would remember doing that)

Brilliant stuff OP - love adventures like this! I think you'd definitely enjoy a complete planetary circumnavigation. On mobile at the moment but I'll be back with a couple of links for you shortly.

OK, so a couple of things you might like. First off there's the Planetary Circumnavigation Club - at its essence a forum thread a bit like the "Sagittarius A* visitors list" where I try to gather together all the commanders who have successfully circumnavigated a planet, but also a community of like minded people who are into this activity.
Forum thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/the-planetary-circumnavigation-club.390451/
Discord server: https://discord.gg/scrqMr9

Then there's the currently ongoing circumnavigation by Rustnsawdust which is well worth following as it's a really good read, very similar to the OP here.
Second time around

I also have this thread which includes some cool places to visit if you like mountains, and especially if you like throwing yourself off the top of those mountains: a-guide-to-good-base-jumping-locations

Oh and finally, I did write an article on SRV driving for Sagittarius Eye magazine a while back which then got re-made into a video version. It's more about driving/flyving fast but there's a bit on climbing in there too.
